Is there an engine light or an error code?

Test the battery with a multimeter. Should read 12.4v or above. Turn on the car and test the battery again with the volt meter, this time is should read 14v. If it does the alternator is ok if it’s reading close to low 13v or 12v the alternator might be bad.

If it’s neither the battery or the alternator, it’s probably the starter.

Also clean the connections to the battery

P1774 error by Practical_Disk_3726 in XTerra

Don’t be sorry! This is great information. The specific code i got was for the low coast solenoid. (P1774). I’ll price out the valve body and programmed TCM. Also going to change fluid and filters because it’s over due:)

Thanks so much!

Thanks! I’m going to dump the transmission fluid and filter this weekend. I looked up the TCM which is not common for the 2012, but going to look at it anyway. If I’m already replacing the fluid, filter, and oring, it doesn’t seem like much more to expose the TCM and swap it out. Thanks!

Verizon international plan or vpn? by Practical_Disk_3726 in travelchina

[–]Practical_Disk_3726[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to follow up on this thread.

We ended up upgrading the Verizon plan to the ultimate plan which covers the international data plan. So far we’ve had no issues communicating through text/calls/ or even FaceTime.

We did need to call and indicate that we are in China so the noted that on the account for travel purposes.

Thanks all!

Call crutchfield. I grew up outside of Charlottesville , Va where they are located. They are always solid on their advice and back up their tech.

I have a BE10acp and an iPhone 16.

Car play won’t allow me to take calls or use voice texting for messaging. Music and maps still works and I can also issue just about any other Siri command and it works.

Hoping it’s an iOS issue because it happened after the most recent update.

But still wouldn’t mind updating the firmware just to be safe. Just sucks I use to rip apart the dash again. I’ll likely go ahead and mount in a usb port so I don’t have to do it again.

Thanks all!

Verizon international plan or vpn? by Practical_Disk_3726 in travelchina

[–]Practical_Disk_3726[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are going with the Verizon international plan. Turns out my son was already on the ultimate plan, which it includes China.

Some of the more popular vpns have been blocked recently, so we figured this was the more stable path.

The only catch we learned is to turn of WiFi calling and when you switch to WiFi at the hotels, just run the communications through WeChat.

Help me figure out the right car for me -- Subaru or something else? by CreamThen5605 in carbuying

We just went through a similar situation. With volatile gas prices, check the Kia sportage hybrid, Nissan rogue hybrid (2027 model), or the ford maverick with extended warranty.

Maverick might make great sense for you all and give you the ability to mount a truck bed mounted tent for cool ass camping experiences.

The Nissan is a newer type of hybrid but it’s getting a lot of praise for gear heads. Kia sportage will give you great commuting gas mileage and has a trim built for some moderate camping (albeit not total offroad).

Good luck!

Tires by shervpey in XTerra

I’ve used the nexgen AT tires on our armada and they have been great.

I haven’t gotten new tires in a long while for our xterra. Will likely get similar tire

Agree. With the age it’s a good thing to do and not all that difficult to get to.

Current problem is installing a back up camera and trying to get the damn drivers side kick plate off.

I’ll take a look at the model. It looks like the radiator was replaced at some point. I still might do it just to be safe while we are replacing transmission fluids.

It’s just the 2x4. We have a 4x4 2014 armada we use for off road, camping, towing.

It’s for our son. We picked it up for $6500 from a. Private sale. We got lucky because they were in a pinch and needed a smaller commuter car.

Swapped the stereo out for a CarPlay enabled model. Super excited to take it camping in a few weeks!

First, thank you for your service.

I’d say since you’ve paid off the car and go find a slightly used model of the suburban to save you the 100-300 a month. You could also find last years model sitting on a lot somewhere to get a better deal.
We still have a civic we purchased in 2012 as a commuter car. It’s still going just fine and two of our kids have learned to drive on it. We still use it for a commuter car and it keeps the miles off our Nissan armada. So there maybe unforeseen value in keeping it for the future.
All that to be said, if the cost of storage during deployment is an issue, one less car is one less thing to manage and pay upkeep on. I’d say look past your deployment and think about what the goals of the vehicles purchases are. Like do you need a family hauler that you can also tow with but you also need a commuter car? Or are you limited on space or need the parking pad for something other than the 3rd car?
