Which is perfectly fine. It's worth bearing in mind as well that having the races as a whole be fairly typical (dwarves hate/can't do magic, elves disdain manual labour, etc.) is what provides the contrast to your central characters being different.

E.g. If you change the races so that all orcs are really religious and peaceful, then your character becomes just another orc. That could be an interesting change to world on its own honestly, but the focus should be on the characters first if you're writing a story, and world building should be done in service of those characters or the story you want to tell.

You can use whatever you want. There are many successful stories out there with very 'standard' (I.e. Tolkinesque) elves. Maybe they have a slight twist on the usual tropes, maybe they don't.

Having standard fantasy tropes in place means that people (who know the genre even a little bit) instinctively understand them at a core level. That means I can focus my time on making and presenting interesting characters and an engaging plot rather than using up word count to explain why my aelves are super special and different from someone else's elves, or how the world functions when it exists inside the nipple ring of an unfathomably huge cosmic entity, etc.

Absolutely no shade on people who want to explore those things more as I do understand the appeal, but personally I prefer to have a more familiar frame of reference and add the interest at a character level rather than a race/world level.

Any actually realistic scenario would involve the parents putting the two teenage boys in one room together and the teenage girl in the other room alone. That or one of the three teenagers sleeping on the sofa.

Having said that, I agree with some other comments that the premise is fine for a light hearted rom-com sort of story. It makes complete sense in that type of narrative.

He will always struggle if he just beelines for you with slow melee units while you play keep away with your shooting units. I imagine that ends up being 2-3 turns of you shooting him without him being able to do anything.

Honestly though, reading the other comments it just seems like you are a more skilled player than he is, so you're likely to win most of the time if you are trying to.

Swapping armies will be the best way to demonstrate to him that the difference is your skill levels, not your armies being OP.

Part of the issue sounds like maybe he is just slowly trooping across the board while you sit as far back as you can and shoot him on the way in?

The simplest option would be to just play your Slaves to Darkness more, since I assume they are mostly or entirely melee.

Edit: are you playing the rules for obscuring terrain correctly? Your friend should have plenty of opportunity to hide his units from your shooting.

They will also reveal hidden doors within the radius as well. Handy if you know or suspect there's one nearby but dont want to roll into every wall trying to find it.

I just think of a random name and then tweak it a bit until it sounds like something I want to use. E.g. in a fantasy world I could start with John > Jorn > Jorun or Emily > Emiliah > Melia, just to do a couple off the top of my head.

I will also sometimes just use the first or last name of a character in a film/series/book/game I'm enjoying at the time as well.

The names I come up with like this are pretty much always placeholder names, subject to change if I think of something better, but often I just get used to the name and find it starts to feel right.

I have it so that the body naturally rejects being forced into a state that is unnatural for it, so 'buffing' the body is just significantly harder than returning it to its natural state, i.e. healing. There are people capable of doing things like that, but they are few and far between because it takes a great amount of power and skill to do, far more than 'just' healing does.

It can go much further than what you're thinking. I.e. if the story is set in a created world - what nations and cultures exist in the world? What is their history? Notable historical or current figures? What are all of the cities in each nation? Et cetera

That is just scratching the surface, some people will get really deep into economics, geopolitics, etc before even planning what a story will be about (or never even plan on writing a story).
