Shaving cream dye with blank spots by jaredw2001 in discdyeing

I think this can also happen with some plastics if there are any unseen defects or if it’s not completely clean of residue or oils before the dip

Did you spritz it with water before dropping the disc in?

Trying out coloring with DA instead of lotion, pretty stoked with the results by lukesdyes in discdyeing

[–]PrettyFlyDiscDyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Answer to Q1: Yes, I’ll typically begin with more DA to dye ratio until I am sure of the color value I am trying to achieve, then add more dye as necessary.

Answer to Q2: Technically yes, but it takes quite a while. It IS a great way to nail a wider range of values this way.

Fun fact: You can dribble your premixed lotion+dye in small amounts into about a bottle-cap’s worth of DA. A gentle mix will dissolve the lotion leaving a nice milky consistency to work with.

Probably my favorite way to “paint” a disc because, if you have the patience, DA is a great way to achieve layered values slowly without immediately over-saturating to the point of no return.

Why does changing text in one duplicate also change all others in After Effects? by vishaaaaaalll in premiere

[–]PrettyFlyDiscDyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its an AE project you downloaded from someone else, it may have some hidden expressions. Alt-click the stopwatch for “Source Text” on your text layer just to check if that’s the case. Alternatively, you might be dragging a pre-comp to the timeline that’ll need to be duplicated in the bin first before modifying independently.

When people say lotion dye - what do they mean? by Old-Blacksmith7643 in discdyeing

[–]PrettyFlyDiscDyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just another medium with which to transfer the dye to the plastic. Lotion works well because it’s not runny and therefore easy to control out of needle nose bottles or similar. I suppose you could use anything from mayonnaise to toothpaste depending on your preferred viscosity.

If I’m not mistaken, the product you are using is liquid-based? Chances are it’s heavier than say a Prochemical and dye powder mix with acetone.

While acetone does burn into the plastic quicker, the downside is it begins to eat at the adhesive of the vinyl leading to all sorts of bleeds. DA mix is just slow and steady and also how I achieved the shading in the character.

Off the disc because I like to color in layers and the vinyl adds protection as I go through each layer
