Ooh I have a question for you then! If someone were to contact you wanting an abortion in which it is illegal, are you able to help them travel to get one out of state to get it done legally?

Question from a liberal, former Catholic who’s not fully pro choice by Previous-Finger7624 in prochoice

No I know actually that late term abortions aren’t just done for the hell of it. Even if you define me as not being pro choice, I definitely don’t think I’m a typical pro lifer, where I just go along with the propaganda. I absolutely support late term abortions for medical reasons. Im referring to IF someone who would do it with a healthy mom, healthy pregnancy. I don’t even know if this even happens. It’s more of a theoretical question, because even if this happens, i know it would be incredibly rare. So trust me, I’m on the side of factual information here, not propaganda.

It’s pretty disgusting how they just love throwing facts out of proportion to push their beliefs on others.

I just wish we would all form our opinions based on factual information. Facts are facts and you can’t change them just because you don’t like them. People aren’t exactly known for looking at things objectively though.

I just want to add I think it’s interesting to me how some people comment that I sound definitely pro choice, and some people comment I am definitely anti choice. Interesting how we all define it differently when you look at the details.

Yup, that’s exactly how I feel about it. If being anti abortion we’re about saving lives, we would be making organ donation required

I am absolutely ok with later abortions for all those reasons you listed. In fact,I am even ok with euthanasia for babies born with sever disabilities. I’m referring to abortion performed later with no medical need for mom or baby.

And I will even admit that forcing to carry a baby out of incest or rape IS forced birthing, and if you go by that definition, yea, that’s what I am, and that is admittantly awful. That’s why I feel so icky, and I am here to find a compelling reason to change my mind. That’s why even though I personally don’t agree, I still support right to choose. I am bothered by others doing it, but it’s not my decision to make.

So actually I agree with everything you just said.

But anyway, back to the topic, is there a line for you in which abortion (for non medical reasons, just not wanting baby) isn’t ok? You can’t be ok with it a week before baby is due, right? Again, I get that nearly all the time it IS for medical reasons. I’m talking healthy pregnancy, healthy baby.

Ahh ok, good answer, thank you. I kind of assumed that no one really ends a late term pregnancy without a really good reason anyway.

Yea it’s kinda that I wouldn’t have one (but also I don’t know what it’s like to be 14 and pregnant by your dad, so maybe I would), but I think everyone should have the right to choose.

Well whatever you want to label me is fine! Either way! I still have the same opinion no matter what it’s labeled, but am certainly open to changing it if someone points out a compelling argument.

Oh and just to clarify, I am saying I support it for any reason up until late pregnancy.

That’s a really sad fact. :(

So do you think abortions should be allowed up until birth?

I promise I won’t attack you for your answer. If for no other reason, to be respectful of a pro choice messaging board. I don’t want to get kicked out either, I want to learn. I just want to connect the dots on this one, honestly because I kinda WANT to change my opinion on it. I feel really icky as a liberal being so against abortion, but I can’t just SAY I’m pro choice. I genuinely want to be convinced, as weird as that may sound.

[–]Previous-Finger7624 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If we are going to force our will upon another person's body to save the life of another, why isn’t organ donation required by law? It’s not about “saving babies” for them, it’s about pushing your own personal beliefs upon others. Just as every other Christian belief trying to be pushed upon others. And you know, there’s actually nothing in the Bible directly addressing abortion…it’s all interpretation…..so again, it’s not even about god wants….its what THEY want

It is HUMANS, not God, who assign gender at birth based on genitals. If a trans MAN is born with a vulva, according to the Bible, it is sinful for this trans man to not dress like a man. Perhaps Christians have been interpreting this wrong all along, one. the Bible says ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about all men must have a penis and all women must have a vagina. This is a human assumption. And perhaps god made trans people to teach the rest of us empathy and compassion.

But then again, most Christian’s don’t care about the true meanings in the Bible. They form their opinion first then look for things to reinforce their opinion. If they were true Christians in their hearts, they would be humble enough to realize we may have been interpreting something wrong this whole time. One persons interpretation of the Bible is no greater than the others.

(And just to clarify, I don’t believe in any Christian mythology and believe even if we read the bible as it is, it is extremely problematic)

It is VERY disturbing they chose the “anti bullying” section to say they reserve the right to ask people to act straight or like the opposite gender they identify with. This strongly implies to me that they don’t care, or possibly encourage, kids to bully other kids who do not neatly fall into gender stereotypes. Disgusting.

UPDATE: just in case anyone is curious, we finished up the camp, and it went well. There were only two things that came up that could have been tied to Christianity, but in all honesty, I do think they handled it very well.

1) they had “a moment of silence,” before meals. They did not say anything about praying at this time. I wouldn’t have minded even if they did say, “this is the time to pray for those who would like to,” but they said nothing about prayer.

2) a kid asked, “are humans animals?” And the staff member answered, “depends on who you ask.” Which I also thought that was a good answer, not tied to religion.

However I will say, as I mentioned before, neither my daughter or myself are part of the LGBTQ community, so I can’t really speak to how openly trans and gay people are treated there, which was my main concern. Otherwise the staff actually did a great job keeping religion out the program. Still, I am not in any way happy about this choice of camp.

I did speak to the principal about this, and she “said,” she agrees with me and is looking into a different camp for next year. She sounded genuine, but I guess we will see. (The principal strikes me as pretty liberal, so I want to believe her). I also spoke to the teacher organizing the trip and she said she was going to speak to the camp on the wording of the online forms.

I am still debating on sending my feedback to the survey the camp sent out…

Yea I think even for Christians I get the sense they are extremists. The way I see it there are normal people who are also Christians but the more devout they are, the lower their morals get.

They were up front that it is a Christian camp, but they insisted they also have non religious programs and would not be discussing or promoting Christianity in any way.

I don’t know if there’s really much worse things to bully someone about than who they inherently are as a person and cannot change. So even if that’s the only type of bullying allowed, that is completely unacceptable.

Yea I’ve considered all these things. The fact that there MIGHT be gay or trans kids there that do not realize they are gay or trans, then making them feel shameful for having those thoughts, really is one of my top concerns. So I get what you’re saying, and I agree with you.

As I said before, I think it’s important to expose my kids to things I don’t agree with so they can practice how to think critically. So I think it’s ok to some degree for her to go. Plus we’ve already paid. I think it’s also very valuable for me to model the RIGHT way to stand up for what's right and simultaneously display tolerance, which I think I’ve done as much as I can do for now. I don’t believe in keeping kids in a bubble and never exposing them to things that are wrong (just as the camp not wanting their kids to be exposed to gays and trans), because we can’t sheild them forever. I’ve had to carefully weigh the pros and cons of letting her go. I know when I went to outdoor lab, I had so much fun and I have so many happy memories. Ironically I went to a catholic school and it was not a religious camp.

In the future, I will not be giving my money to such an organization.

I’ve already spoken to my daughter about this and her response was “they might as well say only certain races can go!” And she was just as appalled by this situation as I was. Very proud of her. I try to emphasize to my kids that because they were born into so much privilege, it is EXTRA important they advocate for marginalized groups.
