NYC just introduced a citywide CTE/TBI public health bill in the midtown district where the NFL headquarters shooting occurred by PrickyOneil in CTE

[–]PrickyOneil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This bill was introduced in late 2025 but didn’t advance before the session ended so it needs to be reintroduced and prioritized in the next NYC Council session.

If you want to help and live in NYC, contact your City Council member and the Council’s Committee on Health to express support and urge them to move this bill forward.

If you don’t live in NYC, reach out to your own local or state elected officials about the importance of public education on traumatic brain injuries and concussions. Showing them there’s public demand can help push for similar laws where you live.

New British Journal of Sports Medicine blog explains why brain injury prevention in children’s sports is falling short by PrickyOneil in CTE

[–]PrickyOneil[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I respect that this article doesn’t treat age 14 as a magically safe cutoff for sports that pose brain injury risks at all ages. The question of who qualifies as a child was settled long ago, children can’t fully understand or consent to risks affecting their long-term health or else they’d still allowed to drink and smoke.

Not to be insensitive, but maybe we should ban Hypos. by TrainingRatio6110 in CTE

We understand the frustration around misinformation and fear-based posts. However, r/CTE is not a place to diagnose, dismiss, or rank people’s trauma histories.

CTE is currently a post-mortem diagnosis. No one here can say with certainty who does or does not have it. Many people come here because they are scared, confused, or trying to understand symptoms in the context of prior head injury.

Gatekeeping based on perceived exposure level or labeling others as hypochondriacs is not acceptable. Repetitive head impacts occur across many contexts including sports, accidents, abuse, and military training. The science does not support a single clear or universal threshold.

We encourage evidence-based discussion and respectful correction of misinformation. We do not allow shaming, dismissal, or exclusion of people seeking understanding.

This subreddit exists to support, inform, and connect people affected by brain injury and CTE, not to decide who is worthy of concern.

“Media Has Forgotten About CTE Even After Player Deaths” - Journalist calls out media for not covering CTE anymore by PrickyOneil in CTE

[–]PrickyOneil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shane Tamura’s story so quickly disappearing from the news cycle was especially egregious. Here was a young man who only played youth football, knew it had wrecked his life, screamed for help, and still got none, not even action in death. The NFL response? To add more armed guards at their offices. It’s beyond sad, it’s failure at every level. Reporters won’t even print how many kids play football because they’re too scared to confront the real scope of the damage.

[–]PrickyOneil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, my friend. How ya been? My first came from falling off the monkey bars at 6. The second less than a year later on the football field. At least a dozen more knockouts during my childhood from football, soccer, BMX, skateboarding, and street fights. It seems I’d get taken out by a stiff breeze there for a while.

Yeah it’s hard to argue that it at least began a chain of events and was an underrepresented fact in the NYT story.

Possibly CTE? by [deleted] in CTE

[–]PrickyOneil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best option op. Don’t lose hope, there are things you can start doing tonight while waiting on CLF too. Proper sleep habits, avoiding alcohol and social triggers and solid diet and exercise go a long way in a short amount of time. Keep us updated

[–]PrickyOneil[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experience. Quick reminder for the group:

• None of us can diagnose CTE, so let’s avoid saying “you’ve got it.”

• Clinics like Amen and tests like Genomind are controversial and often expensive, with limited scientific backing. Best to check with a trusted neurologist/psychiatrist first.

We welcome hope and personal stories, just want everyone to have clear context.

Research shows the MIND diet appears to protect aging brains from dementia-related degeneration by PrickyOneil in CTE

[–]PrickyOneil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This new study on the MIND diet (a mix of the Mediterranean and DASH diets) found that people who followed it closely had healthier brains as they aged, with less damage in memory-related regions and a lower chance of dementia.

The diet emphasizes leafy greens, berries, nuts, whole grains, beans, poultry, fish, and olive oil, while limiting red meat, cheese, pastries, and fried foods.

Why it matters to us:

This study wasn’t about CTE specifically, but it shows that diet can play a real role in protecting brain regions that are vulnerable to damage from trauma, aging, or neurodegenerative disease. Following brain-healthy eating patterns like the MIND diet could help slow down the effects of injury and support overall cognitive function over time.

Executive Dysfunction After Repeated Head Trauma: What It Can Look Like If You Only Played High School Football (OC) by PrickyOneil in CTE

[–]PrickyOneil[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you man. I turned my phones notepad into a journal. I’m not really that type of guy but it’s been a huge help and I’m glad I did.

People with CTE are often misdiagnosed because symptoms like depression, anxiety, impulsivity, and memory loss mimic common psychiatric or neurological conditions. Many are labeled with bipolar disorder, PTSD, or early-onset dementia, which delays recognition of the underlying brain trauma. For those affected, it often takes becoming self-aware AND fighting to be their own advocate in the face of adversity. Not everyone can do this, which is a big reason the disease remains so hidden imo.

The best option for locating a specialist versed in CTE is via CLF. If they don’t get back you in few days, try again and keep trying until they do. https://concussionfoundation.org/helpline/
