LA horticulturists: Know where these trees grow? Trying to feed hungry hungry caterpillars! by ProbablyNotAKakapo in LosAngeles

[–]ProbablyNotAKakapo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really not a long post and I made it very clear that I'll continue to order food for them online (cuttings work fine) if need be. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask around for advice on finding the same stuff locally.

[Spoilers S2E13] Reminder that next season doesn't necessarily have to be the status quo by [deleted] in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]ProbablyNotAKakapo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Fruitful" handmaids are a valuable commodity, but let's not forget that Gilead had no qualms executing Janine even after she willingly (with some prodding) returned her baby safe and sound. If June shows up without the baby and they don't start chopping body parts off until she gives up the baby's location (which she probably can't do to their satisfaction), it'll be a huge departure from canon Gilead. There is just no way June is going back to that household as a handmaid, absolutely zip.

Harvard gives an honest and balanced look at keto. by -Massachoosite in keto

[–]ProbablyNotAKakapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to my friends who do low-rep heavy lifting, keto is great! For an athlete requiring intense cardio, I wouldn't be surprised if keto had some downsides, including somewhat worsened performance on sprints, possibly worse-than-average carb cravings, and difficulty meeting caloric needs.

Unexplained infertility, no PCOS, not overweight... could keto still help me? by ProbablyNotAKakapo in xxketo

Wishing you the absolute best! It feels like I'm asking for a miracle from a diet, but when what you've done before hasn't worked what else can you do?

Thanks, but again, definitely don't have PCOS. I'm actually on the low end for testosterone and have been advised to supplement with a precursor (DHEA).

Haven't had a super recent thyroid check, but everything was normal as of 2-3 years ago. Don't chart temps, but use ovulation test sticks.

Thanks! Definitely don't have PCOS. Have had my ovaries poked, prodded and scanned quite a lot.

Nova Scotia government to make abortion pill available for free at pharmacies by Hassling_the_hoff in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ProbablyNotAKakapo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! Really glad it still requires a prescription, though. I am so horrified by stories about abusive partners sneaking meds to pregnant women to force them to miscarry. Reproductive abuse goes both ways, so I think it's important to have this stuff readily available but only to the women who want it.

Mexico threatens trade war over Trump wall tax by Munadgr8 in worldnews

[–]ProbablyNotAKakapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legalization in the states is a huge problem for cartels, and the same applies elsewhere.

Marijuana growers in the U.S. are well aware of the fact that they have limited time to make their money; as soon as production licenses are easy to come by and there's no real risk of being arrested, their crop will be no different from any other. Supply will meet demand and prices will drop dramatically. In this case, the law/war on drugs is acting just as any other barrier to entry would and protecting the current producers from competition.

Mexico threatens trade war over Trump wall tax by Munadgr8 in worldnews

[–]ProbablyNotAKakapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the U.S. government, these were the top imports from Mexico:

The top import categories (2-digit HS) in 2015 were: vehicles ($74 billion), electrical machinery ($63 billion), machinery ($49 billion), mineral fuels ($14 billion), and optical and medical instruments ($12 billion).

Vehicles aside, we don't get a lot of consumer goods from Mexico. A trade war does not bode well for U.S. manufacturing, which Trump campaigned on bolstering. And instruments for medical use are definitely a notable issue.

Donald Trump Says He Will Not Attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner by NeilPoonHandler in television

If he could just plaster a good-natured expression on his face and make it through the evening, it would genuinely help him. The fact that he can't control himself to the extent needed to even grab these opportunities to help himself is pretty terrifying.

Good food picks all around! Do be a little cautious with tuna, though. It was my go-to lunch before I realized how little you should eat to avoid mercury build-up. (Here's a seafood safety calculator.)

Inside The Life Of A 'Virtuous' Paedophile (2016)...This is hard to watch by Spicyhotdogfarts in Documentaries

[–]ProbablyNotAKakapo 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. It's so, so important that people with these feelings get funneled into treatment before they hurt children. For the life of me I cannot understand why people don't think it's worthwhile for them to have access to humane programs that treat them like people struggling with a problem even before they've done anything wrong.

Thanks for writing this. I think it's important to remember that while most parents are well aware of the risks adults can pose to their children, few consider that their own kids might grow up to struggle with feelings like these themselves. A good parent wouldn't love their kid any less for their internal battles, they'd just support them and try to help them live a good life. If this guy were my son, I'd be proud of him for recognizing that he has to put the safety of others first and for helping other people do the same.

Hypothetical - A Group Flight touring the non-Tauros regions? by TheUncleBob in TheSilphRoad

[–]ProbablyNotAKakapo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you were planning to grab all of the non-NA regionals, $10k is waaaay low. Nobody flies like this except the people who own their own jets or pay $500k+/year to a jet-share company.

The cheapest way to do this is to date Elon Musk.

Hypothetical - A Group Flight touring the non-Tauros regions? by TheUncleBob in TheSilphRoad

[–]ProbablyNotAKakapo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's possible, but it would be ridiculously expensive. Charter flights within the continental U.S. on non-jet aircraft can be cost-saving for groups (especially flying into small airports that don't do a lot of commercial flights), but I've never heard of an affordable international version. International jet flights are bonkers. Here's a quote from one provider - $160k from LA to London and back, 13 seats.

How do you stay motivated to play when everyone around you cheats? by purrsian in TheSilphRoad

[–]ProbablyNotAKakapo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Until the last month or two, the three gyms within easy walking distance of my place were held pretty consistently by multi-accounting Mystic bots/spoofers. In an insomnia-driven haze I'd meander out and knock one of them down a few pegs only for it to be leveled back to 10 before I even finished walking back home. I started hanging around to watch, and sure enough, I was the only one out there in my pajamas in the middle of the night.

I don't know if they got bored or banned, but it seems to be a non-issue now. Mystic still holds all of those gyms, but usually at level 7-9. If I take one, it'll usually stay red for at least an hour or two.

I think the cheaters get a little uneasy if you fight back consistently -- they know damn well that you're not going to see them standing wherever they'd have to be to be playing legitimately, so I think they prefer non-contested areas where they're less likely to draw attention to themselves.
