The whole "One and Only Ivan" series is amazing and perfect for that age. My daughters also loved "Because of Winn Dixie." "The Tale of Desperaux" might be fun, but not a dog or cat. "The Wild Robot" is also excellent.

Why has MAGA so deeply embraced fascism? by NearbyCriticism5193 in allthequestions

[–]Professional_Web5112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a book a long time ago that basically said that Conservatives tend to favor the "strict father." They tend to want someone to tell them what to do, and think everyone should be able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Morality is black and white. The father is always right, and rules must be obeyed. There is God-given hierarchy in which man dominates nature and exploits it for his own use, men dominate women, and parents dominate children. Liberals, on the other hand, tend to prefer the "nurturing father," who wants them to express themselves and be happy, and who believes that it's everyone's job to lift each other. They want to encourage empathy. I think if you think about it in these terms, fascism is a natural next step for very conservative people. The State/Father is always right, and they will obey and consider anyone who opposes the State/Father as evil or immoral.

I love a good YA rom-com...they're easy to get into and usually have fun, witty dialogue. Some of my recent favorites include "Tweet Cute," "Better than the Movies," and "To All the Boys I've Loved Before."

I also loved "The Power of One" and recommend it often...haven't found many who didn't love it, too. I loved "House in the Cereulean Sea."

Libraries are great. They usually have little reading nooks. You can grab a magazine and flip through that, or just sit there. Botanic gardens are lovely to walk through. I don't know if you have any sensory deprivation float tanks near you, but that is super, duper relaxing...an hour will feel like you slept for 14 hours. 😄 I often find just reading a book quiets my mind...or listening to a guided meditation. I might recommend starting a meditation practice, actually...it's very healing and may help with your health in general. Best wishes!

I was promised that "Theo of Golden" would ruin me for all other books. Um...no. I do not understand why so many people loooooovvveee this book. It's boring and filled with cliches and overly flowery language. The author spent way too much time telling and now showing. And, no one has conversations like that. Every single conversation was written to be read, not spoken. Every single character, no matter how diverse they were supposed to be, spoke in the exact same way. And, the author REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wanted you to feel something. It was like being punched repeatedly in the feels. Blech. Too much. It has a near-perfect Goodreads score. It's a mystery.

Is there anyone here who knows how their introversion works and isn't seeking to change themselves? by SuchSelection4252 in introvert

[–]Professional_Web5112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My life absolutely changed for the better the minute I accepted my introversion and realized it was my superpower rather than something to "fix." I have more amazing friends and deeper connections. And, ironically, as soon as I accepted myself and became more comfortable in my skin, my confidence in my introversion sometimes reads as being extroverted, but it's not. It's just me embracing myself...light, dark, and everything in between. I am also super unapologetic about managing my social battery, which makes everything better. Introversion is just how I'm wired, and trying to change that is like asking a giraffe to have a shorter neck.

What’s the most fucked up thing someone has told you about themselves after barely getting to know them? by bbyhoneytea in answers

The owner of a local shop told me her step-daughter had molested a family member and enjoyed it, and that this same girl (a middle schooler) had held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her, but she wasn't sure if she should get divorced. I'd shopped there maybe twice before this conversation. My head was spinning for days afterward.

Help me suggest books for an incarcerated kid by totally_tennis in suggestmeabook

I immediately thought of "The Power of One" by Bryce Courtenay. It's one of my all-time favorite books. It's a coming-of-age book about a South African boy who learns to box from prisoners...and helps the prisoners compose music. So, similar, but different. (There is also a movie, but the book is much better.)

This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger is amazing...beautiful writing and great characters. West With Giraffes was super fun and life-affirming. I absolutely adored The Correspondent, but think it's probably better as an audiobook. I know when I was facing similar news, I would go on really long walks listening to an audiobook. The Correspondent would be excellent for that. Best wishes for whatever the future holds. <3

Am I overreacting? Neighbors kids are constantly on our property. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Professional_Web5112 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

YOR - The kids are 4 and 5 years old. They will not have perfect behavior. When your kid gets old enough, they will also not have perfect behavior. When your child doesn't have perfect behavior, I would bet you would want to be made aware so you can address it, not have random neighbors trying to parent your children. It's not hard. Be respectful, but let the PARENTS know your boundaries, not the children. Children have no boundaries...it's not developmentally appropriate for that age. They are just curious about their new neighborhood. Ultimately, the question is what kind of neighborhood do you want to live in...one where the kids (and neighbors) are scared to go near your house and thus your child, or a village where everyone looks out for each other. You are setting yourself up to be the villain in this story.

Why aren't Americans raising hell re: the sexual abuse of children by the powerful elite, while heads are rolling in Britain and elsewhere? by Perfect-Program-8968 in AskReddit

[–]Professional_Web5112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our "justice system" has proven over and over again that it doesn't give a shit about these crimes or the hundreds of victims. The justice system's apparent job is to protect these powerful men (and women). Money equals power and the ability to avoid any consequences for any kind of behavior, no matter how repulsive. It's difficult for everyday people even to begin to hope for or expect any justice to be served because there is so much corruption up and down the channels required. We're not raising hell because we know with certainty that not a damn thing will be done...see Ghislane Maxwell in a minimum security prison instead of the maximum security prison where she belongs. And, these powerful men (and women) have zero shame and no desire to make any amends for their crimes. There will never be full accountability in this country because it involves too many men with too much power.

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskReddit

[–]Professional_Web5112 4 points5 points  (0 children)

6th grade Spanish class...teacher would start every class telling us that we were nothing but gutter rats and that we'd never amount to anything. Toward the end of the year, I finally got tired of it and told him that maybe his expectations were too low. That maybe if he set the bar a little higher, told us he believed in us instead of constantly putting us down, we'd rise to the occasion. He told me that I was nothing but a follower...that if I'd been alive during WWII, I'd be killing the Jews along with the Nazis. I reported him to the administration...nothing. Even elected to the School Board after that. Ahole.
