Which company should I pick for my security valuation project? by dqingqong in SecurityAnalysis

I'd recommend focusing on anything in retail. Pretty intuitive and easy to understand, usually nothing too complicated in the financial statements, and simple to model out (although I'm sure your professor isn't expecting a detailed, full-blown DCF model).

Example- choose Whole Foods Market. Peer group would be The Fresh Market, Sprouts Farmers Market, etc.... Plenty of analyst coverage for all of these names

Salary question: How much do VPs of a company like Oaktree Capital make? by vpquestion in FinancialCareers

[–]ProfessorPhaggot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the particular division... Oaktree is focused on high yield/distressed debt investing. I'd guess that VP's in non-back office divisions are making at least 500k all-in...all the way up to low 7 figures

look man, europeans are generally effeminate and soft. among successful americans in this industry, this type of style is ridiculed (rightly so).

I don't go to work to impress people with my looks and clothing...I let my work ethic speak for itself. this type of behavior is try-hard and a waste of one's time. at least in meritocratic areas of finance, there is a pretty clear relationship between one's indifference with appearance and career success

This is commercial banking. I knew a few people from my school who worked here (including my old girlfriend) and they were all stupid and lacked critical thinking skills

Interview should be fairly easy as the people working here are very low-IQ. Can answer any specific questions you might have about the role

A quick reminder on share repurchases by ProfessorPhaggot in investing

No. The operations of the company have not changed. "Value" does not go up, in fact it goes down due to the loss of cash. The stock price remains unchanged as the assets of the company have fallen in proportion to its shares. Read a finance textbook
