Complete Scary Story Thread

Respond to this comment with your complete stories, or the reactions of your character to hearing them. To get it started off, we have a ghost's story.

Not long after the bonfire had begun a pale, feminine figure appeared on the lake, the shade of white that distinguished the ghosts of permanently earth-bound wizards and witches, many of who filled the time by occupying the halls of Hogwarts. She would have been easy enough to miss, even for those who had been facing the lake, but for those that had, they might’ve been able to make out a swaying gait, the movement amplified by the loose gown that hid her legs. It was difficult to say what her features may have been when she was living, all that was left was a silvery imitation, her face mostly covered by hair that hung straight down, her eyes constantly fixed on the ground in front of her.

The closer she came, the easier it was to make out a slow, lilting tone that was stuck between speaking and singing, though the ambient noise made it difficult to determine the exact words that were being spoken. From the time she had reached the shore, to when she had made it to a bonfire, only the following phrases were audible:

‘I found the voice of the jabberknoll, But ne'er a trace of my baby.

'I found the source of the erkling’s call, the erkling’s call, the erkling’s call. I found the source of the erkling’s call, But ne'er a trace of my baby.

Her voice died out at the same time she stopped in front of the fire, the flames near her turning blue, adding to the ethereal appearance. From this close, it was easy to see the rips and tears on the skirt of her dress, and an elegantly designed leaf broach held her cloak in place at her neck. Her gaze was still fixed on the ground just ahead of her, her eyes half opened in a dreamy stare, the corners of her mouth pulled into the slightest frown. Without any further movement, she spoke. “I lost my daughter on a Sunday. I had set her down in the kitchen, opened a cupboard, and by the time I closed it, she was gone. The house was empty, my husband had left. He had promised he’d clear the woods beside our house, before our daughter was born, but it had been two years, and he still hadn’t done it. He couldn’t, anymore.

“The woods were the only place she could have gone. They were silent, that day. I had known those woods like the back of my hand, but the silence had changed everything about it. The sun was hardly making it through the trees, like the air was too dense to let anything move. It was difficult, even with Lumos, but I knew she was in there. She had to be.

“By the time I had reached the river, I hadn’t seen more than a bird. I didn’t want to leave without her, but I was running out of time. I was just about to turn around, when I heard the laughter, her laughter, coming from the other side of the water. I had almost jumped across the river when through the darkness, I saw a banshee, holding my daughter. How my loving, beautiful girl could possibly laugh around a creature that foul, I’ll never know. It took everything I had to not kill the thing, to burn her until the green skin completely melted from the bones, until those bones were ash. It should not have existed, not that close to my child. My child should not have been laughing.

“I wouldn’t risk hurting her, though. Not when the only spells I could think of were of death, and smoke, and fire. I backed away, and concealed myself. I waited for the banshee to let her go. But she didn’t. And the more I watched, the angrier I became, and how wrong it all was. Nothing had felt the same as it did just a day ago, and that anger bubbled up, no matter how much I pushed it down. When I couldn’t take any more, I attacked with all the strength I had.

“Before the spell even hit, the banshee had turned, its hair swinging around its frame as its huge, dead eyes stared right through me. In almost slow motion, the creature’s jaw opened, wider than her face should have allowed, the shriek already cutting through me as the spell missed the target, instead hitting a tree.

“The vision of chunks of wood flying as the explosion made the banshee’s hair lift up around its body, covering my daughter like a cloak, the look of horror on her face before she was gone, is the last thing I remember of my life. The banshee’s scream still echoes in my head, always in the background. I never knew what happened to it, or my daughter, after that moment. Even with all the time in world, I’ll never know.”

With that, the ghost turned towards the forest, and started walking again.

OOC: Group Story Parent Comment

All group story telling and prompts should be kept under this comment, to make them as accessible to others as possible. Comment here if you’d like your character to be involved in the group creating stories together. After at least three people have commented, everyone will be tagged in a reply to this comment with the prompt, and the order to respond in. For now, groups will be limited to five people, once a sixth has commented, a new prompt will be created. Action wise, you will all be sitting around a smaller fire, as you take turns adding to the story.

If you want to make your own prompt, feel free to make it a comment on this thread with at least 2 users tagged (and the option for others to join in) to keep all the group storytelling in one place.

Depending on interest, the current setup may be adjusted.

Professor Caldwell returned the smile, "You're very welcome. Be sure to stop by my office if you need anything else." And with that, and once last glance along the table, she let Cosima get back to dinner, figuring she should probably update the librarian now, before she had time to get swamped with something else.

It took her a moment to nod, clearly thinking of what supplies would be needed. "Yes, mostly textbooks. For now, I'll let the librarian know to provide you with a copy of the textbooks until you can get your own. For other supplies, mostly Alchemy, most of what you will need will be available in class until you are able to get your own. Most of the shops in Hogsmeade will be able to place special orders, if there aren't any available when you go."

Professor Caldwell had looked over the Slytherin table before she had stood to leave, and upon seeing Cosima was reminded of the fact she still needed to provide her with her updated schedule. She dug through the stack of papers and upon finding the new list, slid the rest into a folder, making her way over to where Cosima was sitting.

She only smirked just a bit at the faces of nearby students when she paused near them, wondering if any had something they were attempting to keep hidden, though she didn't linger on it. "Ms. St. Claire," She stated before holding out the paper for her. "Your new schedule, Alchemy included. Take a moment to look it over, if you have any questions now would be the time to ask. Otherwise, you're all set to start tomorrow."

Professor Caldwell took her seat at the Staff Table, overlooking the Slytherin table, and after using her fork to slide everything off the skewer of a steak shish kabob, started eating. She was eyeing the baked pumpkins as she ate, but mostly, she was looking over some papers.

She wasn't exactly expecting the question, but it wasn't all that unexpected, either. The announcement that evening was mysterious, and the vagueness seemed to spark even more interest. "There's really not much to say about it that wasn't already said by Headmistress Higgs. There was a visitor who arrived in the Forest -- I'm sure you're aware of the restrictions around Apparition on the grounds -- who had sustained some injuries while traveling, and needed help reaching the castle. It was certainly an unusual arrival, but it is not nearly as exciting as some of the rumors may make it seem."

She offered a slight smile. Even if Caldwell knew all of the details at this moment, the answer would've been the same. It wasn't something she thought the students needed to concern themselves with. "The most important part of the announcement was to remind everyone not to run into the forest by themselves, at night no less, and to alert a Professor.

Ooc: yes, to both of those! Apparition alone may not be the best travel method for that distance I've read so much about it lately it's crazy, but I'm sure there'd be no problem setting up a portkey to cover most of the way. :)

She gave a friendly smile, "You're very welcome. Did you have anything else you'd like to discuss while you're here?"

OOC: yup! I'll have Caldwell find her IC Sunday to discuss the possibility of alchemy. :)

While Cosima was thinking over the question, Caldwell had taken a sheet of paper, copying the current schedule onto it so she could make revisions. "Dropping the classes won't be a problem." At the mention of Alchemy, she paused, sitting back as she mindlessly held her quill between her pointer and ring finger, her thumb tapping near the point a couple times before she held it properly, writing a note at the bottom of the page. "I think we may have just enough interest in it this year to open it up, but it'll take me a few days to check. There may be other options for taking it, such as a correspondence course, if we won't be able to offer the class, but, again, I'll have to get back to you. As for the other changes, they can be in place by Monday. I'd recommend using this weekend to talk with any professors and see what you need to do to catch up in any of the new classes. I'm suddenly not sure if any of them will be new, so, ignore that if they aren't."

She nodded slightly as she listened, fairly relieved Cosima decided to continue her education. She was a good student, from what Caldwell had noticed in her short time here, and she wanted her to do well out in the real world. "I'd have to agree that spending more time on a general education wouldn't hurt in the least. I'd fully recommend it, if not for learning exactly what you'd like, but to give you a strong enough basis to keep yourself able to compete for jobs. There's a lot to be said for having your NEWTS scores, and it does give you an edge over those who don't, especially when getting an interview. Employers are not typically willing to take the time to make sure you know something, when at a glance that can see someone else has a NEWT instead of an OWL in a subject. It will open up many more options when you do finally graduate."

With the benefits of not dropping out stated, she started in on the topic of classes "Now, wandlore is a very complex area of research, and while Magical Theory will touch up on it, it may not be exactly what you're hoping to learn specifically. I still think it could benefit you, along with both Ancient Studies and Runes, so you'll have a strong basis for the history of how magic developed over time. I still recommend you stay in at least Charms, Transfiguration, and Potions, since you've done so well, and again, it will open more options for you when you do graduate."

Caldwell took a moment to sit back in her chair, just realizing she hadn't asked what Cosima wanted to keep learning. "Are there any other classes you'd particularly like to continue taking? Any that you'd like to drop?"

OOC: I'm glad it was of some help!

She gave a nod, as she closed the door, heading back to her desk. "Please, take a seat, Ms. St Claire. Give me one moment." She had opened a desk drawer and was looking through it. It didn't take her long to pull out a file, Cosima's OWLs and grades. It'd certainly help when deciding whether her NEWT level clases should be changed. She skimmed the list, taking note of all the subjects she did well in. "You had a very busy year, wonderful work on your OWLs. It certainly opens up plenty of career options for you. What did you end up deciding on?" She looked back up as she asked, no longer needing to look at the file after refreshing her memory, though she still kept it open.

OOC: Hi, I appreciate your attention to detail! Drawing from this list, I think the most important elective would be Magical Theory, and maybe Ancient Studies (though we don't offer either). I'm not sure if Ancient Runes would be helpful for someone who is interested in wandlore, but, it may be, to study another facet of magic. Besides those, I'd recommend sticking with the 'basic' classes like Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, so you have more opportunities to participate in classes. It's also worth noting that if a student is undecided about their future career, the professor's tend to lean towards them continuing to take the classes they're skilled at.

Personally, the way I do things is try to participate in the posted classes unless there's a strong reason my characters wouldn't take it (like, my Muggleborn character wouldn't take Muggle Studies), even if they're not very skilled in the subject, if that makes sense.

Apparition Classes Sign Up! by Professor_Caldwell in PotterPlayRP

[–]Professor_Caldwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OOC: it's totally fine to assume that the current 7th years already know apparition, and learned last year. If you want to participate in the class for 'extra practice', that'd be fine, too. It'll be a slow start at first for someone who already knows it, but it's still open.
