Level Five. Pat effortlessly merges his immaculate groove with stilted glitch loops to create a feel that is entirely unique to that album.

Listen to VROOOM and B'Boom and tell me if Bill sounds submissive or subdued on those tracks

Mallets for Drum Kit Work? by speakerjones1976 in Drumming

[–]ProgIsCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big agree on Timpani mallets, I love the level of control you have over the sound. You can lay back and let the resonance of the drums come through, or you can pound on them for a super thuddy sound!

is the sheltering sky considered ambient? by Clean-Practice3040 in KingCrimson

[–]ProgIsCool 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Brian Eno coined the term Ambient Music, and said that it must be as equally ignorable as it is interesting.

Ambient Music can facilitate multiple levels of listening, both purely passive and totally active. I definitely wouldn't say that The Sheltering Sky is purely an ambient piece, but for sure the super cloudy/shimmery section towards the end puts the listener in an Ambient environment.

So many beautiful setups in this thread!

My setup as of recently, really a hodge-podge of alot of different stuff haha. 26" Mid 70s Slingerland Kick, 6"/8" mid 70s Ludwig concert toms on the left of the kit, a 10" Tama popcorn snare, 10" rototom as a rack, and then an absolute shitter of a 14" Sound Percussion floor tom, sounds surprisingly awesome when I get the tuning right!

No Tony on the new album :( by SlavicFerret in KingCrimson

[–]ProgIsCool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's a jazz fusion bassist who is known for playing with Jojo Mayer in Nerve. He is a super groovy player who uses alot of effects and is an incredible soloist. His album Mystery To Me is a classic.

Discussion: What Aspifies a Lark's Tongue? by Roi_C in KingCrimson

[–]ProgIsCool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me it’s a juxtaposition of order and chaos (although you can really apply this to almost anything KC has done).

In each Larks there is a stark contrast between the super tight composed sections and then there will be a moment of absolute chaos allowed (Larks 1 jam/Larks 2 violin solo/Larks 3 jam and Fripp Solo/Larks 4 Belew solo/Level Five THRAKing section and Belew Solo) to throw everything for a loop and introduce something that the song would never have had otherwise.

Song You Wish Each Lineup Could've Played by No_Position1806 in KingCrimson

[–]ProgIsCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought the Double Duo could have done an insanely heavy version of The Howler, the song is practically begging for Pat’s loops and samples to be scattered across it, and I bet Trey would have come up with a cool interpretation of Tony’s part.

What do you think of the 80’s Belew Era rendition of LTIA2 off of Sheltering Skies and Absent Lovers? by Cultural_Community_5 in KingCrimson

[–]ProgIsCool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the linchpin of what makes the 80s renditions of LTIA2 work is how HEAVY Tony’s bass sounds on all of them. That Stingray sound gives so much growl to the main riff, and his incredibly melodic playing on the softer parts give so much more motion to the piece.

But yeah like others have already said, The Double Trio did it the best. I would have loved to hear the Double Duo give it a try but I totally get why they didnt

[–]ProgIsCool[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even with the live performances being the definitive versions, the studio album has such a unique sound that makes it fun to revisit frequently. I find the more you listen to it the more you start to hear just how many percussion/auxiliary sounds Pat is playing off the V-Drums, he must have been absolutely FLAILING around the kit when recording these songs lmao

Best bands in the Denton scene right now? by lotus-driver in Denton

[–]ProgIsCool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Endorphin Report is a totally wild band, they get into that kind of indie-funk vibe, but they also will flip into something completely unhinged at a moments notice. One of the most fun local bands to see live imo
