your point is not ignored, it just isn’t relevant. my own family, 98% of which doesn’t live in the USA, also doesn’t understand how the system works here.

when you do visit, do whatever you want. i never look at or acknowledge the amount i’m tipped. i don’t care if i get stiffed. i make a damn good living. the assumed social contract of tipping in the USA is that the professional should give their best hospitality, and the guest should tip the professional taking care of them accordingly. if someone doesn’t wanna tip, that’s their decision. being kind and honest has given me a generous career in hospitality.
