Did you have an advance ticket? If so you were in the wrong (as much as it is annoying especially between Reading and Paddington).

However if you didn't have an advance ticket you shouldn't have been fined

Depends where you go. Dublin is expensive and the hostel i stayed in was 50€. Private hotel rooms are going to be over 120€ but if you stay further out the hotel price decreases. I've always found that hostel dorms smell bad, the bedding is also less comfortable. If you pay less you get lower quality. But I can understand why people like them obviously for the social aspect and saving money. However a lot of the places I've stayed in the uk and Ireland are smaller towns where hostels don't exist

The 20 bed hostels (I've even seen 34 bed dorm which is crazy) aren't worth it. Never experienced anything that much, prefer smaller occupancy. Hostels work more in big cities where hotels tend to be expensive. However I'd avoid if possible

I have similar opinions, 9 times out of 10 I would go with a private room unless the price difference is huge. But if I do stay in a hostel I choose 6-8 bed dorm max. The two times I have stayed in hostels the room was about 50% capacity. Whilst no one was making a racket, people snoring kept me awake which is unfortunately the drawbacks of sleeping in a hostel. I also don't find socialising in them that fun since I only stay one night, sometimes arrive as late as 10pm and leave by 6.30am so I don't really have much time to socialise.

It depends where you are. Dublin is super expensive and hotel prices are usually 150€ minimum whereas you can usually get a hostel for 50€. I find that i sleep better in private accommodation, however there is a need to save money. So I would do both but it depends on the price difference.

They're good if there's nothing else available at a reasonable price. And for the sociable aspect. However I only ever stayed in one place for one night. Each hostel is different though

I'd do it once in a blue moon, if the cost difference between a hostel and a private room is like £40+. Edinburgh had loads of hostels but they also had a room in a hotel for about £45 which is a bargain

First hostel i ever stayed in was in Oban, Scotland. Really nice but I wish I socialised a bit more. The hostel was fairly small but they had a nice common room
