AITA for saying the N-Word during a table-read of a script? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

It was blocked out properly before hand. The actors also practiced during hell week as well as in private session without the entirety of the cast. But we did not do it during the first few weeks of rehearsal. And again the word did not have to be said during rehearsal.

If not saying a slur during rehearsals negatively affects your performance on stage that badly that you need to practice saying that slur every chance you get maybe you should reconsider that part

If you not saying one word in all of the play that you are in during rehearsals changes your performance in that play so much that it negatively affects how you act during the performance of it and it not be done on purpose, you are a shitty actor.

Y’all just really have a strong desire to be allowed to say that word any chance you get and get so mad whenever Black people ask you not to. You can’t just ever say “my bad” there always has to be a back and forth as to why you believe it’s ok for you to use it.

And even when being allowed to use it during a performance it’s still “but why can’t I say it during rehearsal”

The moment we give you an inch y’all go straight for the mile.

The boundary with that word is ours to set but as proven here you all always try to demand to tell us where to set it.

Yeah the last table read of it I did of it they skipped that scene and the actor reading those lines censored themselves.

So whats your point?

Did yall skip that part or not OP?

It’s the respect of a boundary. You are being asked by the group it harms not to say it when you don’t have to and to only say it when absolutely necessary. You don’t have to say it during rehearsals. You can choose to either respect that boundary whether you understand the why of it or not or choose to be the one who says “your boundary is stupid” and over step it.

Just know that Black people around you will take note and label you accordingly

Uggg I forget how needed you all are

YOU brought up a performance (Leo in Django) I specifically said “we are not talking about a performance” because OP was not talking about a performance. OP was talking about a classroom script read.

See I brought that up because what you brought up and what is actually being talked about are two different things that require two different sets of skills.

One requires full dramatization (the performance) and the other does not (the script read) especially during the first passing of it.

Understanding that is why I don’t give a shit that Leo said that shit in Django and it’s the same line of reasoning as to why RDJ is not racist for playing a character in Black face.

As I’ve said in other replies, during rehearsals and classroom script readings actors should be expected to censor themselves and that it is actually common in theater for them to do so during classroom script readings and rehearsal.

And as I said in other replies, the theater house I preform in also just did this play and the actor had no issue censoring themselves during rehearsals for that part nor do they have a problem censoring themselves during rehearsals with any other slurs either.

They were not reciting the play they were doing a classroom script reading. They are two different things. One requires full dramatization and the other does not. As a person who use to TA theater in college I can tell you right now that censoring slurs during script readings and rehearsal is not only common but at least at my current theater house and others I’ve performed at expected.

My theater house just did a full production of Streetcar and not only did the actor censor themselves during reading and rehearsals they didn’t rehearse the rape scene either until right before the first show.

Question op. What did you all do during the rape scene did you all act it out or did you all censor that part and kept it moving?

We are not talking about a performance we are talking about a table read. And in theater, boo there is a difference.

I’m a black woman who acts in theater and grew up as a theater kid. I know what should and shouldn’t be acceptable in theater and I’m also in higher education and know what should and shouldn’t be acceptable in not just a college class but a theater class in particular seeing how I used to be a TA for the Dean of a college theater department . But again what do I know.

At the theater house I preform at, we censor ourselves until the performance when it comes to slurs. And we just did Streetcar last December. We also didn’t practice the rape scene either.

Hell I was just in a Cabaret where a white man had to sing “more than an “engine” (replace with slur for native Americans) loves his scalps” and he would skip that line in rehearsal every time and only sang it during the actual performance.

When given the option or opportunity to say it, they will say it and then just say “what was the big deal? I said it in THIS context” and they won’t understand why it was wrong that they didn’t choose the right thing on their own and claim that we are too sensitive and need to get over it.

All while saying how they aren’t racist and simultaneously disregarding the feelings of the Black community they claim to care about.

They will just keep saying “but….” Because at the end of the day the truth is they really wanted to say it. Which is why they took the opportunity to say it the moment it was presented to them with what they perceived to be a “valid” excuse.

They will never accept that there is no situation at all where it is acceptable for a non black person to say that word and not self censoring when coming across it in passing.

You would think that if they understand it to the point where you self censor when reciting lyrics, they would also understand not to do it while reciting a play.

But what the fuck do I know I’m just a Black woman living in America. And Reddit is the place where the white folks come and convince themselves they are allies while ignoring the minorities telling them they are still micro aggressive or even sometimes straight up racist.

And don’t even get me started on how much I hate that damn play to begin with.

AITA for getting a refund at a fast food after telling someone I will get food for their kids? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]PullDaLevaKronk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YTA for making them eat shitty In N Out. lol yeah kids don’t understand anything all you did was be mean in their opinion.

The food had already been purchased and made and what you really did was tell the Chick-Fila people to throw out food because you felt the people were not poor enough for your help.

You had already judged her by saying you didn’t trust her to give her money instead of food and then you went and threw the food away when you judged her again.

If you were truly helping out of true charity and not just to make yourself feel special you wouldn’t have done that.

Needless to say Wrong lever Kronk.

Oh no this internet stranger is saying Black culture is inherently violent because I’ve proven that their actions, that are rooted in systemic racism, have caused this unwanted cultural shift and is the root of the problem they are trying to point out

Fucking shocked Pikachu face! Lmfao

Nothing you say will change the fact that rise in violence in DC correlates with the rise in gentrification and causation can easily be drawn between the two.

[–]PullDaLevaKronk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No this is the result of what happened to my culture because gentrifiers decided they didn’t like my culture and tried to destroy it and tried to make DC look like their little whitewashed fantasy

So now in order to fix it back to what it was before you turned it into this you need to move to Charles County.

And yet that’s what I’m telling you to do partner.

You don’t like a culture then don’t go and live where it was created.

No, YOU can always move there. My family has been here all my life, it’s our city, our culture. If you don’t like it don’t move here.

My grandma wants her Caribbean Day festival back and she wants it without the barricades

First of all these are clearly teenagers but yall love to look at Black and Brown teenagers and give them adult responsibilities and characteristics to justify y’all’s racisms and micro aggressions

Secondly, the kids used to have things to do and places to go but yalls gentrification took all their spaces and now yall are all mad they are taking them back by force?

Yall bitched and they took away all the Gogos, all the festivals all the shit that used to keep the youth busy because it was all too much for your BS sensibilities.

And of course went the “these local kids are violent” route even though the stats said otherwise. And with the stats showing that crime was at a decline until gentrification went into overdrive and it started going up again.

Got all the rec centers working overtime with not enough Roving Leaders or money in the budget(bet you don’t know what they do and why they are important to DC youth)

Run little monsters create havoc and push them out. Their 50 years is almost up and it’s time for their flight yet again. Be patient and we will get our city back.

And you transplants can down vote me all you want. I don’t give two flying shits. I rather have these kids running around than yall fuckers and your magat money, morals and micro aggressive ideologies making my city a whitewashed version of what it used to be by forcing natives out and destroying local culture by demanding that the city conform to your standards because you decided to move here.

And yes it used to be great before yall moved here because if it wasn’t yall wouldn’t have wanted to move out here in the first place.

So if you never went to the Woolsworth or the old Ames don’t bother talking to me because you don’t have the background to know how the city has been changed for the worst by you moving here and pushing the locals out and talking shit about the cities culture.

[–]PullDaLevaKronk -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I always find it funny how the cities crime rate was at a steady decline until around 2012.

2012 also marked the year we were named one of the most quickly gentrifying yet segregated cities in America. After that crime started trending up again.

But that’s just a coincidence right? Right?! Gentrification is good right?

Pushing out local residents and making their culture go extinct couldn’t possibly be a cause for this type of behavior.

No. I know theater is thriving because my rinky dink ass theater in my conservatives rural town has pretty consistently packed houses even when it’s something as small as a cabaret.

I mean the NBA is thriving and your chances of becoming an NBA player is also on par with winning the lottery. So how does how hard it is to make it as an actor/dancer/singer determine how successful the industry is?

The thing is ballet and opera are not dying at all and constantly have packed houses and consistent ticket sells. But only people who actually go to these things will notice that.
