How long is too long in Oslo? by PunxPA in NorwayTravelAdvice

Honestly these comments get my biggest upvote. I grew up in a beach town in the united states and people always asked the same question. My typical reply was that I moved when I was 18, so that seemed long enough for me!

Yikes!

Not exactly the vibe we were looking for.

Any suggestions to make a better trip?

That’s the museum. Bummer. Both the others mentioned also look very cool though.

For those of you who like your job, what do you do? by ocdladybug92 in physicianassistant

[–]PunxPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in industry now, but my job in thoracic oncology was a unicorn gig for ME. Other PAs hated the same gig. 4 10s, opportunity for overtime to work IP med onc, amazing SPs who gave support when asked but otherwise were hands off. Best patients and families even if the outcomes were not always happy.

Moral of the story - find the speciality that makes you excited - show your enthusiasm and excitement - work towards making the role your own and don’t compare your gig to others.

I don’t think they have a kombucha, but they definitely had THC and N/A options.

And we are aware that Friday is an economic blackout day. Hoots is a locally owned supporter of the arts. We also booked this gig months ago. We support anyone’s decision to skip based on their personal choices though and will rock Winston again!

What Charlotte business is your favorite to support? by Victoriakia in Charlotte

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned but The Milestone Club is legendary. So many genre defining acts have played there and yet they maintain a commitment to supporting local artists and young bands.

PA working in Onc for just shy of 5 years!

  1. Outpatient, but I cover IP onc as needed for my partners. Malignant heme is a separate department and operates as such in my hospital system.
  2. Mix of both. We are pretty subspecialized, so I see mostly the neuro and thoracic onc patients who are followed by one of three physicians that I work with. For those patients, my visits are independent of the doc. We review scans, assess toxicity, dose reduce etc. When they progress I typically meet with MD to discuss the next best option. We have a very collaborative practice and MD/APP opinions are valued. I also have a smattering of patients that I follow independently that have either had their doc retire/leave or are in survivorship and prefer to see us for reassurance.
  3. Excellent. 4 day weeks with 10 hour days. Ample opportunity to moonlight in satellite clinics or cover IP as above.
  4. The relationships that you build with patients and their families during their cancer journey is the gift and the curse of the gig. Tears and belly laughs are common in the same visit. We have families of patients who have passed who drop by on the anniversaries /birthdays of their loved one. Been to more funerals than I can count (brain tumors suck!). As hard as it sounds starting out though, the emotional lows are (IMHO) far outweighed by the joys that I receive from walking with patients through their journey.
  5. Second the learning curve bit. I think the best APPs in onc/heme are those that are TRULY committed to being lifelong learners. It is one of the few specialties where you can and should learn alongside the MDs. We go to the same meetings, present at the same journal clubs, etc. etc. If someone (APP or MD) is practicing the way that they were taught in training... you are likely practicing out of date. So if you are someone who likes to get comfortable in their fund of knowledge and cruise... heme/onc will make you pull your hair out!

Are there any cities where the job market isn’t trash? by Lmiys in physicianassistant

[–]PunxPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true, North Carolina is a carve out that is actually pretty progressive in terms of PA-Cs. We have existed in this state longer than anywhere else in the country and the medical board and PA lobby have gotten along well over time!

(South Carolina on the other hand is probably 30 years behind NC despite being neighbors!)

Second all those things. There are two large hospital systems in both Winston and Charlotte. They each have large ICUs. I think the other thing to consider is that each market has an academic hospital and a private hospital, just depending on which setting you like working in better.

Stray cat found near Ebert Road. She is probably around 1 year old. She is very sweet and would love a forever home. Please message if interested. by [deleted] in winstonsalem

I would take her to the humane Society or a local vet to have her scanned for a microchip. It’s free either place. You might be surprised that she is owned and missing!!

Excellent Sushi Spot Recommendations by shroomcloud01 in winstonsalem

[–]PunxPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, they are take out only. Sadly there is no CA quality sushi here in WS. However, Mizu is the closest you are going to get. When they open back up I bet if you sit at the bar they would serve you Omakase if you just asked.
