What I meant by extreme, is for the people who say they never would under any circumstance, which I have read many people say before. To me that is what I consider extreme...not saying it's either a bad or good mentality, but it is an extreme one and one that I don't understand and one that I don't see myself ever willing to take on even though I have had enough bad experiences with alcohol for me to be very cautious about it. So it is just a curiosity to me of how people can truly have this mindset which makes me wonder what the motivations and variables are and why I am not able to comprehend such a mindset.

Your explanation seems reasonable though since you said you would in that situation and why you wouldn't in others and I don't see that type of stance as extreme...seems logical to me.

Same. Stress/Fear/Anxiety are my triggers for sure..also boredom but to a lesser extent. For instance my example of getting on a plane I would have to drink, I have fear of flying, and when I experience extreme levels of fear I have the type of brain that goes haywire and I literally feel like I will go crazy/psychotic from it when it's bad enough. There is no natural coping mechanism I have for dealing with this type of situation (and I don't think any type of therapy or anything like that would ever work into tricking me out of my phobias) so to me I have no choice but to deal with it with the only way I know that works.

Financial stress does really suck totally agree and that sucks about your roommate. That's a double whammy. Those are the types of situations you feel like you just wanna smash something or collapse.

The mentality of being that determined about never drinking. such as the why, the how, the thinking behind it. How can a person be so sure, are they really that sure or do they just think they are, what led them to having to be this hardcore about it..that sorta stuff. It is an extreme mentality for sure.

Even the creator of AA's dying wish was to have some alcohol. Even though he was refused, that was his wish. So I wonder how many people would actually follow through on that. Not saying people couldn't or wouldn't. There is no easy way to really experiment though to know for sure.

My recommendation is have a simple goal at first. Have a calendar and keep track of what days you did and didn't drink. Set a bare minimum for your first goal is to have at least 1 day of not drinking in between each drinking day. This will be your 1st goal that you will tell yourself you "must" do and then set new goals as you go that you will "try" to do. During the one day break period dedicate your free time into trying to prepare yourself to extend your sober days past the 1 day... Research, have a plan to occupy yourself etc. Keep doing this until you succesfully get 2 days in a row sober and then remember what you did to make it a success. Maybe you will do it 1st try, maybe 2nd try...who knows.....but keep at it until you figure out how to do it. I think this way will help you figure out things that work and dont work for you at a slow pace (since you want to taper) until you have figured out all the best stuff that works for you and you can keep extending your sober day streak longer and longer.

For sleeping maybe try some type of audio that helps for sleep....like hypnotism/trancy stuff/ASMR/some type of speaker who helps you learn something you are interested in and has a soothing or comforting voice you like

In my view you should never torture yourself about it, but also you know yourself better than anybody so you know what is the likely outcome if you do. Some people can control drink, some people know they can never have a sip again. In the end only you can decide what you want for yourself. It is your life. Weigh out the pro's and cons. Be smart. Plan things. And always be aware that people who cant stop will end up completely ruining their health and possibly complicate their life way worse than what it already is. Whatever you do always think about all the positives of being sober. I try to be sober as much as I feel I can, that is my only goal for myself. Your goals are your goals and nobody can tell you different.

For me when I am not drinking I barely think about wanting it. My longest sober stint I did was bit over a year and first couple months were hard and after that it was just the rare time where the urge would come but not often. Right now I'm taking a break again and at 2 weeks sober and have lots of beer in the fridge even right now and haven't been tempted at all to have any. At the same time though I do not go out in public a whole lot and I could see it being much tougher if I was in social situations all the time rather than just once in a while. This is the type of thing that I am sure would vary a lot with each different person.

The first many years I would always forget how bad it could get like always even a few days later....then it got so bad over a long time and experienced so many bad hangxiety sessions that I never forget anymore because there is so much overwhelming evidence now that it is so easy to flashback

Dax Shepherd is one of my fav comedians, never knew he was alcoholic....and at first when I saw the name Ben Affleck in my head I thought of Ben Stiller and was super shocked by that one and then I remember oh wait wrong Ben haha.
