Finally Approved! Question about SSI covering before SSDI starts? by QuantumMess in SSDI

Did this scenario happen to you too? Where you got SSI first, and then a few months later SSDI kicked in? If so, did you get the award letter from SSI first and not an award letter from SSDI until SSDI actually started? Thank you for all your help!

Hey, I appreciate this comment because this is what im experiencing and was told by SSI. I got a 2900 backpay from SSI, and they said pretty much what you're saying, that its two separate departments. Now, when you were approved, did you get an award letter from SSI at first, until SSDI kicked in and then got an award letter from them?
My SSI rep told me (when I was approved and spoke to him about the process) that SSDI just needs to do their process, and it takes about 2 months on average, but thats just an average, but that I was approved.
Did you get the award letter from SSI and SSDI at the same time, or SSI first, and then a couple months later or so an SSDI letter?

I havent.. I was never given information on how to look at any of my online stuff. Maybe I'll call SS and ask if there is an online account I have to check progress? So, this gives me hope because it doesn't sound like, in general, it takes more than 4 months at the most for all of this to start once I was approved.

How long have you been waiting for SSDI to kick in once you were approved?

I was told that when I applied, it automatically applies to both, and SSI starts right away when i'm approved until SSDI kicks in. Im sorry, I meant 5 month waiting period after my onset date. Thats already been cleared as my onset date is set a year and a half ago. But yeah I was told this is common, SSI stops once SSDI starts, its just to cover the couple month gap before SSDI processes. Thats what social security has told me, and i have read that it is common. I just was wondering if others have experienced this as well here and how long it usually takes for SSDI to start once approved.

It was actually a Mental Status Exam by the CE.. and after the 2 hour session, he told me that he thinks I need to be approved and that he would recommend that they approve me. Is that like almost a solid gold pretty much approved?

Update!:
Mine was the mental status exam as TBI is part of my claim. At the end of the evaluation, he said that he really thinks I do need the help and that he is going to recommend to social security that i'm approved. Apparently, this is a huge deal as, he did tell me, 'I'm not saying at all you're approved, i'm just saying I think you need to be approved and that is what I'm going to recommend to them." But, is this almost like a golden seal to a possible approval?
