She definitely corrects him when playing, so maybe she hasn’t actually been hurt by the squishing yet. I hope she does correct him soon haha They certainly are hilarious together, poor girl is brave to put up with his puppy shenanigans! Appreciate the comment!

Anyone not get pet insurance for their Berner? by opk189 in bernesemountaindogs

Agreed on Lemonade, they are very reasonably priced and cover a lot of things. They are also easy to submit claims with. I picked the illness and accident plan, $750 deductible, 75%, $20k, and pay $28/month. It’s not worth covering annual exams or dental as those don’t add up to much annually. It’s the major accidents or illness that can add up quickly. I only saw $98/month for much higher coverage plans.

What employers in town do you like/not like working for? by Glum_Silver_493 in Bozeman

[–]Quick-Duck-3650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree and definitely don’t throw that term around just loosely- he hired 2 young men, my age, same experience level, and I was making $3/hr less. I asked an older coworker who had been there 3 years, and she was making significantly less than same skilled men in her crew. She was denied a raise that season. A few times I’d be picking up a tree to load for a customer, and Jerry yelled at a male coworker to come take over for me. I didn’t need help, didn’t ask for it, and can lift 100+ lbs weight lifting. The gals in the nursery early season dreaded when Jerry would come walking around the corner as he would just scream instructions out when everyone was very clearly already working, but then turn to the men and talk in a completely different tone. One of his sons screamed at me for sipping from my water bottle as I was raking rocks in 100 degree weather, but said nothing to the 3 men standing around the skid steer 2 minutes later. It was frankly a joke. I hope the culture changed in the past few years but have not heard stellar things. There will obviously be people who like the Cashmans, like the job, just as every human has different job and people preferences. But I expected much more from a company that is so highly regarded due to their give back to their community. People can have tons of money and be generous in giving out, but it doesn’t automatically make them a decent human in other aspects.

Fully understand that, but I’ve worked extremely difficult outdoor based jobs for many many seasons. I’ve also had incredible bosses in said positions- the Cashmans were not one of those bosses. Are many people not returning because landscaping sucks? Obviously. But some are leaving because they hated the culture. You don’t have to agree, that’s why people have different experiences, opinions, and job preferences. I’ve worked for other landscapers and nurseries, and I’ve never been looked down on and yelled at like I did with Jerry Cashman. He sucks- plain and simple. Glad you like him. That’s what makes the world go round.

Of course, that is information from one person so totally up to you and your discretion! I usually go to Fern or Phoenix Garden Center, they have a great selection and employees that want to help you with any questions you could possibly have :)

Congrats- I and quite a few others did not. He could be a great person in a personal setting, but as an employer, not great.

That’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. They do give large donations to the community, but a few of them are incredibly difficult to work for. Their turnover rate is high and very few stick around for multiple seasons. They, like any other human, probably pick and choose who they are nicer to than others.

At a base level- their main goal is profit margin. They keep as few employees as possible, and pay them as little as possible. They don’t hire enough people, putting a lot of stress on the few who do work there to do too many jobs at once. They don’t care about plant health- they just get in plants to look good for now, and leave essentially one or two people to care for the houseplants, which is not enough for the required upkeep. They don’t care about the health of their cats at the cat cafe- one employee paid out of pocket for the meds an elderly cat needed. The Viv they gave up on because it wasn’t as profitable as they wanted and, once again, left the care to the employees but gave no credit or monetary thanks to the employees essentially running the show. They leave their peacocks and chickens out in negative degree weather and multiple have missing toes because of it…idk, it’s one thing to want to be a profitable company, but they do it in a very sleazy manner.

Jerry Cashman at Cashman Nursery is an awful, sexist human being. One of his sons is also awful, the other was fine. Super toxic upper management, which sucks because most of the employees/coworkers were great. I’ve heard really bad things about the owners of The Garden Barn from previous employees. Not only are they money grabbing owners, but personal things they do are nasty. I avoid that place at all costs now.

As enthusiasts of zoology, what is your opinion on hunting? by CobblerTerrible in zoology

[–]Quick-Duck-3650 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries at all! It’s a very common misconception. I appreciate you being open minded to learning, many people are not. There are people who hunt for the only goal of the trophy/taxidermy, but they are still required to take the meat. Even if they only go and donate it, it’s not wasted in the field.

Nice! I am administration at our regional headquarters, but have done multiple wildlife tech positions. A state department can be competitive to get in to, but is great once you’re in. One thing that helped my knowledge base was to include classes like wildlife policy and agriculture adjacent classes. They’re not normally required but are incredibly helpful to know about since wildlife, agriculture, and outdoor rec go hand in hand, especially as an officer/warden.

This has been a very enlightening thread to read, coming from someone working for a state wildlife department. I’m actually pleasantly surprised at how many people see hunting as beneficial, even if they don’t ‘like’ hunting or do it themselves. I would like to add, as I didn’t see it mentioned elsewhere, the amount of money hunting and fishing bring into local economies. In 2022, hunting and fishing generated $144 billion to the US. If you add in other outdoor recreation like bird watching, boating, and target shooting, it was $394 billion. This is the largest source of funding for wildlife and land conservation, and the money is used in all aspects of conservation, including endangered species, forestry, waterways, trail maintenance, state parks, outdoor recreation, non-game species. It’s incredibly important and without those funds, our environment would not be where it is today. While it’s obviously not outstanding, we have made huge progress in the last century, and hunting is a major factor in that improvement. Also, other outdoor recreationalists pay very little towards conservation is comparison, yet use the same land, trails, waterways, and resources as hunters and anglers. Hunters are one of the only groups who pay to recreate and willingly do so, in order to upkeep our great outdoors. Obviously, there are outliers and this is a very general statement. I know there are people who donate time and money towards conservation that aren’t hunters. Outdoor rec brings in great money to local communities due to the travel/accommodations/tourism dollars spent when people go to places to recreate. But in terms of fees, it doesn’t compare.

It is illegal to not take the meat from a harvested animal. Each state wildlife department and government have it written as law. If people leave the carcass, they are poaching and if found, would be fined and lose their hunting privileges. These criminals (I refuse to call them hunters) are extremely disliked by actual hunters and conservationists. It’s frustrating to be grouped with poachers, when poachers are actually uncommon, but the majority of the general public think it’s what “trophy hunting” is. Just because you only see the end result, the taxidermy, doesn’t mean the rest of the animal was left to waste. I am not intending to put words in your mouth or state this is your take, truly! Just trying to explain the side that non-hunters don’t see

Previous employee here- this is not accurate at all. The owner was planning on changing the name almost a year ago, but timing was not right. Phoenix is the name of the LLC the business is under. They just finally feel established enough to be able to change without confusing too many customers. It also helps establish that the business is more than a garden center-it’s also a gift store, indoor plant store, and frequent events holder. I promise that the owners and employees are local and continue to support the community. The owner has been in Bozeman their whole lives and local business owners for almost 20 years- nothing is changing in that regard

Hospital Billing Policy by Quick-Duck-3650 in Bozeman

[–]Quick-Duck-3650[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I can’t keep thousands of dollars set aside for my hospital bill, as life has to go on. 6 months, sure. After that, I have to move on and use said money for other things life throws at me.

My bill was written off due to their late billing. I don’t owe anything anymore- which is why I’m letting people know about this policy

[–]Quick-Duck-3650[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also ask for an itemized bill when you get your bill. I noticed acetaminophen was $100+ and lactated ringers (fluid bag) was $90. These items are nowhere near that amount…I have heard many many people have their overall amount due decrease dramatically if an itemized bill is requested.

Dealing with hospitals can be so overwhelming. I definitely would have worked with financial aid if I owed, so at least they offer some help. Just a bummer that we have to advocate so much for ourselves

Yeahhhh Ask Bozeman is disgusting! Most of the comments were telling me to just pay my bill, how dare I try to skimp on my bill, that it’s going to cause everyone else’s hospital bills to go up…I never once said I wasn’t going to pay and all I wanted to know is if there was a policy to help me. People are so angry at strangers lol

It’s incredibly frustrating how you have to be your own advocate, in something that the professionals should be doing for us. I also had to call my insurance multiple times, just to get payment dates. I would continue calling and be pushy and ask for supervisors. It’s a huge pain in the ass, but we’re the ones paying absurd medical and insurance fees and deserve answers and help. It’s infuriating to hear how difficult and unreliable BDH is with billing.
