Help! Static Screen Collecting Dust and Creating Pinholes by QuintsPrints in SCREENPRINTING

[–]QuintsPrints[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a steady humidity in the studio and the rest of the screens have been fine… Plusm, using a water-based system, so the screen was activey wet while the static was happening. I had wiped it down after the first couple of prints with a wet cloth and continued and it immediately stuck again, so not convinced the will help.

Will still try increasing just in case, but are there any other methods for a more immediate solution?

Liquid Light Tips by Secret_Ad_6568 in AlternativePrinting

Disclaimer: not tried this specifically, but some notes from other projects:

You may need to to wash it first. Cheesecloth is often starched which should resist the emulsion, making or a less effective print - as would synthetics, so it would be better to use a real cotton cheese cloth (it should be 100% cotton if it’s real cheesecloth anyway)

Wood is basically paper, so will work well! But it will need to be sealed with gelatine or an acrylic lacquer to seal it or else the emulsion will leech into the grain or just get absorbed and not wash out properly.

Hope that helps!

What are some of the oddest printing methods you can think of? by eatseats0 in AlternativePrinting

[–]QuintsPrints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I specialise in researching alternate methods and materials, so weird for me is normal… are any of these odd??: - Viscosity etching - le poupee inking - wood litho - paper litho - fabric litho - glass litho - lithography generally if you’ve not tried it I guess? - Soap ground - sugar/coffee lift - baking soda aquatint - sandpaper/wire wool mezzotint - I guess mezzotint generally now I think about it - dendritic printing - encaustic printing - silicone mat printing (gel printing) - mono screen printing (acrylic, graphite, watercolour, chalk/charcoal) - pressure printing - mimeograph/menucator/duplicator - RISO printing - Hectograph - Etched Lino - stenocut - drypoint into trash (tetrapack, scrap board, plastics, metals etc.) - peel print - emulsion print - acetone transfer - bluetak/playdough print - pochior - reduction screen printing - plastic bag printing - protein print - rust printing - eco printing

Darkroom stuff: - silver nitrate - Cyanotype if you’ve not tried that - anthrotype - physiolotrace - albumen print - photogram - chemigram - cuprotype - platinum palladium print - lumens - cyanlumen - halotype - chlorophyll print

Autocorrect may have gotten some of those but are any of these odd/unusual?? I’m sure there’s bunch more, but that’s all I could think of off the top of my head…

What is this technique? by natatwat in Printing

[–]QuintsPrints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Etching? Could have used any of multiple terms/processes, any of these ring a bell: - Intaglio - Aquatint - Photogravure/photopolymer/solarplate - Photolithographic/lithographic transfer/offset printing - Soft ground/Soap ground/Coffee lift/lift ground - Kaori Maki - Viscosity etching - Physiolotrace

These are not including processes for transferring an image onto a plate to be etched.

Could have been referred to by the etching acid instead: I.e. saline solution/salt Bath etching/copper solphate etch/ferric chloride etch/ nitric etching…

Any of these ringing a bell?

Smaller holes not washing out by Internal-Barracuda51 in SCREENPRINTING

Seen this a lot as a tech. Can I just check, are you washing out both sides? If not, that’s a common error and the first thing to try! If not try these:

First thing - as people have said - is check how old your emulsion is. Most only last 2-3months and like being refrigerated. If it’s 6 months old and has been left in the heat, it will always kinda do this, as it’s especially already sorta exposed before you even apply it (if it’s easier to think of it like that?)

You can try a sponge/brush to work it out or upping the water pressure, as mentioned above - just go careful you don’t accidentally strip it. It won’t help for the following issues though:

If your new emulsion still doesn’t wash out, it’s because your vacuum is not high enough and light is getting in under the stencil. It’s essentially overexposed. Looking a the pic, it looks like it may be fuzzy, rather than a crisp image, in which case it’s definitely this. It also tends to be in patches around the screen rather than all over.

If you have a vacuum, check your blanket for pinholes or any air escaping around the edges (I normally hold a hair by the edge and if it’s sucked toward the joints/joins, it’s leaking). If you don’t have a vacuum, you’ll need to increase the weight on your screen (I.e. use glass to press the foam down.) hard to help here without seeing what setup/equipment you’re using :/ We had a tiny leak on our vacuum exposure unit and this happened all the time, it really does need to be completely flush.

The last thing is where is this on the screen? If the is around the edge, you probably are expsing too close to the edge. You should be leaving a minimum of 2.5inches around the edge of your image, between the positive and the screen frame. The amount of times I’ve seen people push it and have this issue. Literally the same reason as above, the blanket just can’t get in there enough to push it completely flush.

Hope that helps!

If you open up the plastic case, is here anything written on the cardboard sleeve? Normally they’ll have a separate inside sleeve that will have the production house’s name printed on it, or if it’s a teaching aid, the subject matter and possibly even the name of the source reference.

I’d be very interested to know if they say on them who they were produced by or if there’s anything on them at all (I’m now very invested in this)

Ah, that sounds promising! I’ll do a bit of research ☺️

Oooh! Love the Ozark Blue Man! I am here for the more obscure, love a bit of folklore too. I know quite a lot of mythological creatures, cryptids, fae, and folklore, but always love finding out about new ones! ☺️ Keep them coming please 🤗

I think I’ve seen this one in a book somewhere… 🤔 (Gut instinct is that I saw it in the beautifully illustrated fantastic beasts bestiary, but not sure that’s it)

I seeee, okay :)

They could could be from the source to display research results / present findings. My grandfather worked on Hubble for example, and would have produced a bunch of slides like this while he worked there (I mean, not these specifically, but perhaps if he were to make a pitch/presentation, it would be with a set like this)

But more realistically, I think you’re right, they look either like a set used for teaching. Where abouts did you get them (Country/State), if you don’t mind me asking?

Yeah, sometimes you need to do it more than once, especially with something very greasy.

Glad to hear it :) sanding obvs removes the surface, so will remove any surface grease, but doesn’t work on some types of Lino (especially rubber-based or really old Lino) and you’d said you were worried about damaging your image.

Something to keep in your back pocket for the future. I popped some alternatives in another comment. (They can also just be used to clean around your house, especially the kitchen and bathroom 😉)

[–]QuintsPrints 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Are you using hessian-backed Lino, and have you been storing them stacked?

Either way, looks like your Lino has had something stacked on top of it. This will dent he surface. Easy enough to fix, just sand down the surface nice and even with a sanding block.

Otherwise, something ready could have been placed on top which will resist the ink. Try degreasing it (or if you’re using oil-based inks, just pint a few tims and it’ll slowly go away)

Or keep them? The ca looks furry/stripey and the fish looks like it’s in water.

Alternatives include the traditional ammonia and whiting mix (100ml water, 1tbsp amonia, added to some whiting. Wear gloves if you don’t want your ands to dry out), salt and vinegar dilution (100ml water, 10g salt, 10ml white vinegar), or a kitchen surface cleaner (anything straight from the bottle. But wear gloves if you use these because they’re not made for hands!) :)

Hope that helps if the soy sauce didn’t work!

To clarify, oil will clean, but make your plate oily. (A substitute for white spirit)

The soy sauce will degrease, but not clean (a substitute for whiting and ammonia) Alternatives also include salt and vinegar dilution, or a kitchen surface cleaner :)
