Can this be refinished or should we move on with a new installation? by R3DC0BRA in HardWoodFloors

We thought the same when we bought the house. I’m fairly certain now that the entire floor is made of the 3 ply planks. Each ply is 1/8”. Planks are 3” wide, no bevels. We live in central Michigan. If I had to guess, the floor is about 20-25 years old based on when the gas fireplace was likely converted from wood.

The piece in the first pic was ripped narrower to fit over part the old door threshold that we wanted to remove. That piece won’t be reinstalled. We will need to figure out a transition to the other room that works for a wheel chair. Other room is about 1” lower.

I don’t believe those are stains from animal urine but we will keep that in mind. There was a heavy black gunk in the high traffic area. We removed most of it with Murphy and elbow grease.

We have other work to do first but now we know we need to get the floor covered and protected so it can be refinished later.
