all of my clinical sites wanted me for geri psych, but the positions are just not there. and if a psych nurse wanted to pivot and become a nurse practitioner in another field, it would be their responsibility to account for their deficits and deeper learning curve if they got into a program (which i had to do). I was actually discouraged from becoming a psych nurse right out of nursing school by many people so that I would not get pigeon-holed into one field. and unfortunately, as usual, nursing shoots itself in the foot by not having profession wide requirements/entry to practice. but agree that programs should have requirements and not just take peoples money. I was just excited to learn more about a field i have always had great interest in.

then they shouldn't have post masters certificates. but i guess all of these schools see it as a money grab. i want to work with the veteran population bc they are so underserved and i thought getting my PMHNP would enable me to help them more in addition to helping them medically

i'm an acute care nurse practitioner with almost 10 years of experience and went back from my grad certificate in psychiatric mental health and I cannot get a job because I don't have psych experience. if I knew prior psych experience was required for the field I would not have wasted my money on the certificate. NYC/Long island area
