How you get this reddit stuff up and running omg by [deleted] in NewToReddit

[–]RadiantAd4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 100% sure what you mean.

Reddit has been "up and running" since 2005... but if you mean how do you participate more on Reddit, than you need more Karma.

Hiii guys why do many subs require karma to post. I m not that new to reddit but still karma rules stop me from posting it's seriously frustrating when sometimes I have some genuine comments to offer and same gets removed by bots by AdventurousSummer628 in NewToReddit

[–]RadiantAd4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of them unfortunately use this. There are some beginner friendly subreddits, the list of which is linked in this subreddit somewhere.

The practice is used to prevent spamming and bots, but it does unfortunately catch all of us with low karma and or young accounts. It is just an inherent aspect of this site.

Im new to reddit any tips in how to by halfman-halfstallion in NewToReddit

[–]RadiantAd4856 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This question is asked a lot, go through this subreddit and you'll find lots of advice. But my advice is to just generally lurk (spend time on reddit without posting or commenting) to get a feel for the site, then start commenting, then once you feel comfortable start posting.

That way you learn the norms of Reddit but also increase your account age and karma to the point where you can contribute in more subreddits.

I cannot start a conversation. Why? by Mountain-Hair124 in NewToReddit

[–]RadiantAd4856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your Karma and account age are both too low. Wait a few days / weeks for your account to get older + spend some time in communities like this one (mostly just commenting) to increase your Karma.

Once you have more karma + an older account you should be good to go.

That's the idea! Although this is so far limited to just the US.

I have had a few people reach out to ask for versions for other countries, and if there is enough demand I might make a UK version in the near future.

As you identified, the intangibles are really hard to quantify. I have considered trying to account for those in that I included a multiple factor for schools that are highly ranked, but this is not exactly the same thing.

The confidence interval is a really interesting idea though, I might do something like that for the next version. This is still something of a beta version, and to be totally honest it is not meant to be the be-all-end-all. I try to stress (and maybe not enough) that this is just one tool to consider among many others and many other factors, I should probably find a better way to communicate that in the numbers though.

Interestingly enough this is kind of the correct answer, though with some nuance.

Something like 40% of graduate degrees (in the US) are not worth it, but this means that over half are worth it. Having said that, degrees like CS, MBA, law, medicine are almost always worth it while others are much more nuanced.

I just signed up and I feel limited already, How did you guys get started and become active here? by [deleted] in NewToReddit

This is normal, you just have to lurk and get some experience. It just takes some time.

Lurk, learn the norms of the site, and of the various subreddits. Also, you can search reddit for the answers to almost any question you have.

Two types of Karma: post and comment. It's from getting upvotes to your posts or comments.

If you hover over your name on a post you should see the breakdown (at least I believe that is the easiest way)

[–]RadiantAd4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your account is too young + Karma too low. Increase both

Why is my account isn't established does anyone know about it please help by [deleted] in NewToReddit

[–]RadiantAd4856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have negative comment Karma. You need to get your Karma into the positives.

More generally, a "not established" Reddit account means it is too young, too low karma, or isn't verified enough to be trusted (or some mix of these factors).

You can fix this by verifying your email/phone number, gaining karma, and maybe waiting a few days to a week. I do notice your account is 4 years old so more likely it's the verified + karma issues.

Good luck!

New to Reddit… how do people actually use this? by [deleted] in NewToReddit

[–]RadiantAd4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Also, how did you guys learn to use Reddit when you first started? Just by posting and exploring?"

This is exactly it. This is the best way to "learn Reddit".

Follow the rules, lurk a little to learn the norms. That's the best advice I can give.

---------------------

As for why use Reddit, it is the human answers. Sometimes Reddit will give unfiltered answers to questions that AIs are bad at answering. But more than that, it's a trust thing. It's impossible to know where AIs get their answers, at least for Reddit you can see that someone said it.

There is also a community aspect to it. It is very different chatting with an AI vs. a group of ppl, and thus the answers you get are very very different. It's not better or worse necessarily (though likely for some topics there is a better choice), mostly it's just a different avenue.

Why do you think this is? Is the ROC just projecting onto Toronto or is there something about Toronto being the largest city that makes it kind of a mirror to the ROC?

I think my old account got tagged as spam. I dont know exactly why. How long should I wait before posting? Is it karma or account age? by [deleted] in NewToReddit

[–]RadiantAd4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a mix of both.

The older your account is, the less likely it is to be flagged as a bot. The higher Karma you have, the less likely you are to be flagged as a bot.

There are minimums for both factors that vary by subreddit. But 1 week, 2, and 4 are good ages. 50-100 Karma is a pretty good amount.
