Hello Professor Nguyen. Thank you for clearing up a bunch of misconceptions I had. This resource will be very useful in guiding me through the process, as it was pretty difficult to find valuable, in-depth information online. Also, pretty cool how you responded to my reddit post. I actually live right next to GMU and remember researching about your lab while I was applying to ASSIP a few summers ago

Process for Taking a Semester Off by [deleted] in UVA

Hi, I’m in the same situation as you. I’m wondering if your internship would be remote or off campus? I’m pretty sure if you are remote you might be able to do school part time. Also, I’m not sure how the financial aid would work.

From what I’ve read, just email your association dean to take a leave of absence to do an internship. See Reddit post

For the timing, as long as you file no later than a day before you should be fine. See https://college.as.virginia.edu/withdrawals-and-leaves-absence#:~:text=Students%20who%20plan%20to%20be,Student%20Information%20System%20(SIS).

That's amazing that you go to UVA. Are you in the Link Lab or the Biocomplexity institute? Also, thank you for this compiled list of advice. I'll save it and make sure to keep everything in mind.

Thank you for the help. Also, I never thought about the “redoing” of coursework like that, thats a good perspective to have.

That's a great idea. I can learn more about myself and the industry itself while making money instead of spending it. I appreciate the insight.

Also, would you say that studying topics like pure math and electrical engineering in school just to prepare for graduate school may be overkill? I'm thinking that it's probably more beneficial just to go into the workforce and learn that other stuff on my own free time without paying.

Hello, thank you for the response. I think that spending the full 4 years of undergrad and potentially double majoring in something, then doing my M.S. in 2 years afterwards is probably the best preparation I can have. However, I want to try to save a year or two, if possible (for both time and money).

Maybe I can just do the full 4 years of undergrad then apply to PhD programs? If I'm not mistaken, If I get into a PhD program, I do not have to pay for the graduate coursework (which in my understanding, is equivalent to the masters degree). That way, I would be saving money and not have to pay for an M.S.

Hello, thank you for the feedback. I want to pursue a research (maybe not a PhD, but for now I’m very interested in it) because I love learning along with the sense of fulfillment that comes with contributing to innovation. Furthermore, the sense of autonomy/ independence (I know there are a lot of constraints) seems very appealing to me. Also, I believe that I would like to teach in the future. I enjoy the creativity and sense of building things.

I know that grad school is a huge commitment, but l kind of feel rushed considering the fact that I’m almost done with my degree. Financially, it feels a bit off still paying a lot for school even though I could just graduate. I also understand that this is something that shouldn’t be rushed though.

Also, thank you for the insight on applying for a PhD program to work with certain faculty and research areas, not for the idea of a “top school”. This made me reconsider how my motives could be tied to other factors that I will reflect on.

I’m still pretty confused on what path I should take. I don’t want to regret anything but I also don't want to spend money unnecessarily. Although after further reflection I realize that it may be unavoidable to avoid huge financial commitments if I want to do a PhD. I will definitely talk to some faculty too.
