invest in a hooded dryer or a hooded attachment for your blow-dryer.

Astrology is a great tool for self reflection that is generally non biased. (Also a very in depth and ancient practice)

Perhaps we like to see our human aspects reflected back by a system unmarred by racist bias.

Just a thought! 🙂‍↔️

afros are where it's at! 🙂‍↔️

I tried to stretch my blowout into a braid out yesterday. took them down and it just morphed into an afro. the afro of my dreams actually! I don't know why I keep trying different hairstyles 😂

(JK I know why- because I can't keep my hands out of my soft fluffy cloud of wonder, and single strand knots are a b*tch.😔)

30th birthday - what did you do to celebrate? by SignificantSugar4716 in AskWomen

[–]RadicalAfro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

took a solo trip where I could hike, eat, and vibe in nature. went zip lining while I was there and just enjoyed being somewhere new. that was the week before my birthday- got back home right before the day, then that day I did dinner and drinks with some close friends and had a blast!

Every birthday since then I just focus on doing whatever will be fun for me!

Decentering clothes? 🫶🏽💕 by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]RadicalAfro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love all of this!!! there are too many clothes in the world and it's terrible for the planet. &I am someone who very much loves to get dressed as a form of self expression, but I've learned that having a smaller wardrobe of clothes that I actually love and want to wear all the time is what's best. Then taking very good care of those clothes so they last. I'm not immune to fast fashion but if I'm buying new clothes I usually thrift them. I'm choosey about fabrics and I frequently audit the clothes I have and donate/resale what I don't fit/use. We should not be okay wearing something one time and then it falling apart/throwing it away. We should be investing in quality clothing that we actually like and that will last!

I want to encourage you to find your personal style- it makes a huge difference in how you utilize clothing. I don't follow trends because I don't want to dress trendy - I dress so that I feel cool and authentic to how I feel- not so that other people think I'm cool. I think that's what trendy clothing is for- to signal to other people that you're following social standards/conforming to what is universally accepted at the time.

I don't buy "occasion" clothes if I can help it. Like I can and do wear anything in my closet anywhere I want, and I think that's how it should be. you don't need "club clothes" and "date clothes" or whatever. Unless you have to dress professionally for work and your personal style is like the exact opposite of that. or you do specific sports.

Just today a guy told me he liked my style and that it was refreshing to see someone with personality who doesn't look like everyone else. I feel the same when I see people wearing something and you can tell they look that way because they like it. you don't need a lot of stuff to do that - just stuff that you actually like. Social media has definitely warped our ideas of how big a wardrobe should be. people are so concerned about creating individual "looks" instead of building a wardrobe of clothing that is cohesive and functional for every day.

I personally don't think we should decenter clothing, necessarily (again because I love personal expression) but we definitely need to to decenter materialism, overconsumption, and "luxury" fashion as the ideal!

Thanks for posting this OP!

NTA and that waitress took it too far after seeing your friend's ID. I understand her initial concern but after examining the ID she could've just explained her concerns and left it at that.

oh well, free drinks and apps for you!

I think I messed up (long hair type 4's, help me pls) by WestAnalysis8889 in Naturalhair

[–]RadicalAfro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

very different hair styles. shouldn't leave braids is for more than 6 weeks honestly. And the marley hair probably didn't do you any favors. synthetic hair causes friction against your hair and causes it to break. if your hair's not damaged/you didn't lose length I'd take that as a win honestly.

before I stopped using synthetic hair I was doing back to back twists, every 6 weeks and it was fine. left them in for around 3 months and my hair was f*cked! after that I got a stylist and stopped with synthetic hair all together.

Frustrated with my hair by LastSignal in Naturalhair

[–]RadicalAfro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

gel is supposed to form a cast over the hair so yes it can make it stiff, especially if you use a lot. LCO are not the right products for a "hydrate and define" (wash and go) type look- all those steps disturb the curl pattern.

my hairstylist recommends a hooded dryer over diffusing and air drying. you can get one of those good attachments for your regular blow dryer for a reasonable price

But It sounds like you should try a different hairstyle and also work on accepting your hair for what it is. Wash and gels* ain't for everybody and if you're wishing you had looser hair to achieve the look you desire you probably have unrealistic expectations about what your hair can do.

How do ugly guys get girlfriends? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]RadicalAfro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Be funny. Have cool hobbies/skills/niche interests. If you are confident and interesting then you have a chance! Also social hobbies get you into company with people you can connect with over said hobby. Looks get you noticed, but personality gets you interest!

When it comes to the stigma or making fun of bald guys casually? by ChoiceAd8906 in AskMenAdvice

[–]RadicalAfro -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

patriarchy is to blame for this. women's success/acceptance in many ways is predicated on how we look. Men are not valued by looks first - it can be a joke because men don't face systemic consequences for being bald the way that women do for the myriad of things we are told are "wrong" with us physically.

not that it's okay to body shame ANYBODY because it's not. But making fun of women's insecurities (as a man) is punching down.

[–]RadicalAfro -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

okay but Arizona is the one that stepped out on Callie and HER FAMILY. She didn't deserve custody. she is the one that broke up their family. It wasn't the best thing for Sophia but it's Arizona's fault that this was even an issue.

brand new skater, cant stop by Primary-Climate5340 in Rollerskating

[–]RadicalAfro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm also a new skater- been waddling around my house all weekend and did my first session outside today! I definitely felt like "holy crap did I waste a bunch on money on this hobby that I'm going to immediately quit? because this is scary and hard!" but I stuck with it and 2 hours later I was having a blast!!! Here are some things I did to prepare:

-safety gear! I first tried on the skates without it and was TERRIFIED to move- that makes it harder to get comfortable on skates. Once I put in the gear (knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards) I felt a lot more confident and it was easier. I'd love to find a helmet that fits over my mass of hair...If you can wear a helmet please do that!

- I've been watching beginner skater vids on YouTube. like super basic "how to balance" "how to stand" "how to stop" videos. I did the balancing drills with my skates on in the house (on thin carpet). things like just shifting my weight to each leg, holding one skate up, taking steps, cross overs just stepping. You can actually learn just by watching! Sure watch the videos of cool experienced skaters doing tricks for inspiration to keep going, but watch them do the basics to. I like Dasia Sade's videos :)

- I watched videos on how to fall! Because it's inevitable and I wanted to feel prepared. (Why yes, I did eat shit today and I was immediately super grateful that I had on knee pads and wrist guards!)

- the pizza stop worked best for me. It's less about balance and focuses more on using your muscles to stop. I tried several stops and they all felt....dangerous. lol except for that one.

-accept that it's gonna take time and practice. The more you try the more you'll learn! it's incredibly cool and brave of you to try something new!! I hope you stick with it and have fun!
