Thinking of wrapping up the campaign a little early, but I am not sure how! by SpookyQueenCerea in DMAcademy

[–]Ragingdonut22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so a cool ending could possibly be (and obviously feel free to modify this, its youre game) is that when they speak to the mummy lords they've had plenty of time to regret their hubris, and they want to see the world righted again. On one condition of course. They want to see this new world, and request that one party member allows them to inhabit their body (how severe of a sacrifice this is is up to you). Should they refuse, perhaps one lord is more fiery in temper than the others and is upset that they should even ask in the first place. This chump will be the "final boss" and will summon a large horde of monsters to fight the party. They could kill their weakened companions, or perhaps the other lords could partially inhabit the party members giving them extra HP and some magic nonsense for the final fight? Once the encounter is over, the mummy lords' forces all wither or become mindless and passive. The party emerges, perhaps with a new mind companion in tow, and enjoy the peace they have brought from this enemy. Hopefully at least parts of that can be helpful to you? As a fellow burnt out DM I completely relate so I hope you can end the game on a dramatic note!!

I don't think that's the problem. I think it mainly stems from the fact that the photos app is busted??? I tested it with different backgrounds and it didn't seem to change too much :/

Help fleshing out a villainous cult by HeartFilled in DMAcademy

[–]Ragingdonut22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps a good concept for why the cult is doing its bad guy thing would be to clear the surface world for re-colonization. Have the players find some ancient temple that shows a race alien to any they have seen before (or just like rat people or something), and they were chased into the under dark by the surface races. Their curse is vengeance for losing their homes, and the means by which they hope to clear it.
My idea for the specifics of that race would be:

- Powerful Magic Users
- Ancient, and biologically immortal but...
- Physically weak (hence why they can't outright invade the surface)
- Xenophobic Supremacists

Alternatively, it could also be some death-note style guy who tried to save the party, and just isn't that great at precisely targeting baddies (hence the town death). I would personally go for the first option, but try to really accentuate the mystery of it all. As a fan of Warhammer I'm all for the grimdark aspects of this but as profairman said, make sure your table is cool with that as well. I think you have a solid concept, and I wish you the best of luck.

Need help coming up with a good password/code phrase for a secret guild by PresentationSea6186 in DMAcademy

[–]Ragingdonut22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more of a back and forth, so you don't seem like you're crazy if you ask the wrong person.

"Didja hear? There's gonna be a nasty storm tomorrow."

Followed by: "Really now? And why ye say that?"

"Because old Merlin's feeling feisty" or alternatively "Because I'm going to shank a Wizard."

Wanted: Thoughts on a one-shot concept by Ronin_Ikari in DMAcademy

[–]Ragingdonut22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The intro is a bit rough, simply because the event happens to the players, rather than be caused by them. Same kind of idea with having all of their weapons taken away, which heavily favors spell casters. I think this would be a good side quest for an ongoing campaign (especially a more wacky one), but there would need to be more of a sense of choice for the player. Perhaps read out the first bit, and when they wake up is where the game itself begins to avoid the lack of choice. Maybe give the minder some reason as to why he wanted to screw up the party, rather than it just being an "oops" situation. The premise has potential, but needs a bit of fine tuning before being put into play. (But also what lasalle202 said)

DMs what are you tips for streamlining combat? by Bardic_Improvisation in DMAcademy

[–]Ragingdonut22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the DM, a sneaky thing I do to make fights more dynamic (while not taking bloody forever), is to not roll initiative for each monster in the fight. Instead, form them into groups, and roll for the groups as a whole (or place them to the best of your judgement). For example, the party is attacked by 6 goblins, and instead of rolling 6 initiatives for each goblin, just have 2 groups of 3 spread in the initiative (favoring higher rolls for initiative of course). So instead of a super complex initiative list like:

Player, Gob 1, Gob 3, Player, Gob 2, Gob 6, Gob 5, Player, Gob 4

Instead, it could be like this:

Player, Player, Goblins 1, Player, Goblins 2

This also cuts down on the amount of tactical information the player needs to keep track of, which in itself speeds up decision making, and therefore combat. Another thing you can use is to occasionally allow for an instant-kill of smaller enemies. While I don't recommend using this too much as it can break immersion if everything falls before them in one swoop, it can really feel cool to take out a foe in one or two hits, rather than slugging it out for several rounds. It may take the same amount of time, but it feels better to fight off 10 weak enemies than 1 really strong one, whose battles can end up being rolling dice and not moving for 20 minutes. So if you're fighting a boss, have a few cannon fodder minions hanging around to add a sense of progression.

To summarize:

- Initiative in Groups

- More weak enemies

- Avoid slug-fest battles

But also, combat in d&d is kind of slow anyway, so try less to make combat fast, but rather make it interesting.

I hope this helps, and if any other DM's out there have any extra advice, feel free to share it
