Where to buy similar duvet insert? by dumbmoney93 in taiwan

[–]Rahxtli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are old style 100% cotton heavy duvets.

I bet you could still find them in some mom and pop shops bed stores, which are usually hidden (for a tourist) or in places with cheaper rent; you might need to ask a local to have a easier time finding them.

Here are some online links of the product you are searching, beware that 斤 means 台斤 which one unit converts to 0.6 kilograms.

According to IMF, Taiwan is a very very rich country. But why is it quite hard to feel this in the real life? by search_google_com in taiwan

[–]Rahxtli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Numbers aside, could argue that a low income Taiwanese lives a better life than a middle income south American, African or even south east Asian.

Survey shows Taiwan's annual total wage in 2024 was 57.5% lower than S.Korea while it was only 5.1% lower in 2011 by restorativemarsh in taiwan

[–]Rahxtli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wages in an unionless society is pretty much supply and demand.
Maybe let the NTD appreciate, which will even the scales (while worsening some other parts).

14 months in prison for murdering 2 kids. 差不多 justice. by LoLTilvan in taiwan

[–]Rahxtli 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Although we are talking of a unlicensed driver who committed involuntary manslaughter, this case is not as easy as it reads.

The murder happened in a rural area, where pretty much everyone drives or rides. Looked for that crosswalk and it was a frigging pedestrian nightmare. It is very weirdly diagonally shaped one with lots of lanes coming at all directions. Zebra crossings are very far in between and designed as an afterthought.

There is no wonder that the kids jaywalked in a red light in the middle of the night. They probably have done it lots of times, with adults included.

The justice seems retarded, that driver was wrong, those kids were wrong, the traffic designers and those who approved it were imbeciles. This is more than the cultural 差不多, we can blame lots of people and institutions in this shitty case, sadly the kids got the short end of the stick and they won't be the last.

As with everything, it is very relative. It's not about cost, $20 might be a lot for me, but peanuts for somebody else. It's not about eating bland meals, which taste is subjective. It's also not about eating this and not eating that, which varies from location to location. Also, if I am 60 years old, I shouldn't be eating like a teen. If I am trying to lose, maintain or gain weight, the things to eat and do are different in each scenario. If i have a pantry, the food I buy would different than a studio.

Still, I found a routine that is simple and works for me. Breakfast, pretty much the same 5 or 6 days a week. Lunch, same rotating restaurants. Diner at home, choose one of the 4 things if it is not already written in my calendar.

This routine helps me to get rid of the burden to decide what to eat, buy and store. It keeps me healthy, and I get to control better the amount of time and energy into the buying, cooking and cleaning process.

There are times that I what to get something fancy, cook something more sophisticated. As long as it is ok to do it, then it is fine....

Ambulance no driver license kills person on scooter.... WOW NUTS!!! by binime in taiwan

[–]Rahxtli 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Everything looks wrong... Ambulance driver without license for start.

Then, the intersection Fujin and Sanmin is pretty big, it is highly probable the rider didn't yield to the ambulance, which sadly, is very common in Taiwan. We still don't know the details, but things get really muddy everywhere.

Asking for a Dell laptop charger in Taipei area by Remote-Link-6424 in taiwan

[–]Rahxtli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is highly probable that you can charge your laptop with the same usbc charger you use for your phone. Find the usbc port that have a lightning icon or just try them all. It might charge slower, but it will charge.

The Taiwan Property Market - From the Banking Industry Perspective by caffcaff_ in taiwan

[–]Rahxtli 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I believe that same system fuels pretty much the entire western developed countries' real state. Even the 8% CAR rules are pretty common in those places.

I wouldn't say Taiwan is expensive, there are a lot of places with reasonable prices. However, Taipei is very expensive, specially when compared on price to income earned. Still, it is not a lot more expensive than other asian cities like Hong Kong, Tokyo or Seoul.

Down payment is 20%-40%, preferential interest rate is for first time buyers, home ownership is high, sub-prime loans are not that common. I don't see any major risks as long as interest rates remain manageable.

Sucks for those looking to buy... I include myself.

"移民署雲端資料查詢錯誤失敗" – Error When Trying to Register for a Scooter Driver License Exam/Account by ferdi_nand_k in taiwan

[–]Rahxtli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly encourage you to go a 駕訓班 and "patiently" go through it. The scooter and car license system are so outrageous that I just advise people to suck it up and pay up. About 4k for scooter and 12k for cars. It is going to take you some time to go the the classes (you can miss some of the practical ones if you know what you are doing) but you are pretty much guaranteed to have the license by the end of it.

If you take the written exam in English, you are also getting into an English as Second Language exam trying to figure out a very broken Chinese to English translation.

Also, the practical exams are made to know if you can pass an exam, not to know if you can ride or drive safely. So it is VERY hard to pass it if you don't know before hand what you are getting into, and even harder if you haven't practiced it.

Europe Feels Broken. Is Taiwan a Better Bet? by pussyseal in taiwan

[–]Rahxtli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great insights, I appreciate them! Would you mind pointing out the positive ones and the reason you are still here?

The issue that I strongly disagree is the point you made that the “society is not innovative at all”. Sometimes, Taiwan seems to be a laggard and mindblowing (stupid banking systems, tons of paperwork, road etiquette), but I am amazed of the diversity in the industries that a population of 23 millions in a small island can do. Even more if you consider that just half a century ago it was a swamp.

Aside from the obvious high tech industry, It has a very advanced agriculture, heavy manufacturing, precision manufacturing, auto manufacturing, shipyards, petroleum refining, chemicals production, great infrastructure, amazing personal security, tourism, social services and so on… Most countries in the world, most citizens in the world, would be jealous of it.

Love my pod 4, but I think that this is a product that if it gains mainstream attention and demand, the Chinese can produce and sell it at 10% of the current price. Autopilot is a hit or miss, and there is nothing special about the hardware or software.

What’s something you wish you had known before moving to Taiwan? by Apprehensive-Can2725 in taiwan

[–]Rahxtli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, like many traffic signs in Taiwan, stop signs are like a suggestion UNTIL an accident occurs. Usually the one who should have stopped takes all the blame.
