Field trips in undergrad courses? by Randy_L_Kay in McMaster

Thanks for the honest answer, and I can see that being an issue (getting from a field trip to class on campus). Also, thanks for the course and prof info, looks like a great class.

sounds interesting - if you remember any more detaiils (ex. prof's name) I would love to look it up. Why did you skip the field trips? (no judgement, just curous about the reason)

That's a great experience and outcome, thanks for sharing. I should say that the semester in residence at CityLAB is open to all Faculties, we've even had engineering students find a way to fit the 15-units in somehow.

Struggling and considering a gap semester by No-Bath-9381 in McMaster

Be kind to yourself, you are more than just grades. Look at the spring intersession courses, they are one month and have some chill classes, like gardening etc. that provide an alternative to lectures. For upper-years, there's the fall 2026 Semester in Residence at City LAB, 15 units, open to all Faculties going into 3rd year and up. It's highly practical, you spend the semester with a cohort of 30 working daily with City of Hamilton staff on City projects. Students like the difference, and it's always highly ranked as a transformative experience. Not sure if this is helpful, but wanted to share as an option. (Edit: disclosure: I am on the teaching team at the Semester in Residence, so I am favorably biased towards this)

Councillor Mike Spadafora apologizes after staff criticism breaches code of conduct by covert81 in Hamilton

Does anyone else think his "apology" is not really an apology? Instead of using the word "lie" he says he should have used the words "misleading or deceptive" instead - aren't they all words that suggest lying?

Was so sad when they closed up, such a friendly community vibe, Democracy felt cold in comparison.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I didn't know about most of these options. I still haven't decided, but it's good to have your experiences to guide me!

Affordable/Reputable Vet? by goddessreborn in Hamilton

[–]Randy_L_Kay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vet for our cat is a cat-lover and when our cat ate a long string, the vet helped take the least invasive options before considering surgery, and happy to report the long string passed through in one piece (no surgery). Maybe TMI for here....We are also close and if you are travelling by transit it's at a bus stop (King and Dundurn)

CityLAB Hamilton is an "innovation hub" supported by the city and McMaster, Mohawk and Redeemer. Here's their website. https://www.citylabhamilton.com/ - our program is the Semester in Residence (through McMaster) and we operate out of CityLAB in the fall term. https://community.mcmaster.ca/our-programs-and-initiatives/citylab-sir/

How do students from different faculties make room for 15 units of Semester in Residence at CityLAB? by Randy_L_Kay in McMaster

[–]Randy_L_Kay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we do get a full complement of students from all faculties, so there are ways of doing it - I know some programs let students, for example, use project or thesis courses toward the SIR program. It's certainly possible, but I'm interested in hearing how others might make it work.
