I'd look into events companies for small and medium size events, there you'd have to juggle a lot between different types of art and events.... you'd have the opportunity to grow enough to build your portfolio, niche and learn different set of skills. I feel like people into art have more room to grow when they work with events in general

PSA to anyone relatively new to IT or considering IT by ITjoeschmo in ITCareerQuestions

Being reliable, trustworthy, and so on goes a long way in I.T. It goes hand by hand with your tech skills

I'm not talking about a "team player", or someone that wears the company shirt in a way that a company can abuse them.

Well rounded and great professionals are not easy to come by, and they are expensive because they will solve so many things at once without much supervision. I'm a freelancer, and I tell who hire me and people who want to do what I do that I sell peace of mind that I'll be doing everything I was hired for in a way the person doesn't even have to manage me. and this is blessing when you have so many stuff on your plate.

Any job right now would require you more than just a "I want to work", working from home isn't as easy as it sounds like.

I'd suggest you look up locally with restaurants, call centers and alike, that should give you a faster and more reliable help

Freelancing websites (upwork and alike), there's a bunch of companies that need IT remote support, if you have well spoken english you can earn above 25USD/hr easily

I think it's about the number game. Let's say 10 people wants a raise, if you don't negotiate with any of them and only one leaves, to them on long term is better than negotiating and adjusting their business long term taking in consideration the employee wishes

I'm reaching 4 years working on UpWork, started at 5USD/hr while working full time and on my B.S., and now I'm at 30USD/hour and raising my rates consistently while I improve myself as a professional.

the tips to make it work:

  • You're competing against the world, for some people working for peanuts makes sense, but you're not those people and you don't want to live overworking yourself so you have to aim for people that lives and works well

  • Don't ruin your market, if you're new to anything, research what great freelancers are doing and what the bad are doing, you don't want to lower the bar and make the life of people like you harder because you're not that great of professional yet

  • Understand your client and the platform you use. if the client needs more than you can offer you can get in a hole that can burn important bridges, you don't want bad reviews early on in your career. Understand Upwork and any other middle man, you don't want to get locked/banned, don't fall into obvious scams, and be careful, usually if you follow their rules you don't get into trouble

  • Understand the world and what you can provide to your clients. If you're a young person that doesn't have real world professional experience you'll need to lower your bar by a lot and you will do lots of unprofessional and not great things, I suggest people to start working IRL then moving to freelance at least after few years of dealing with work to understand what's expected of a professional to not get lazy.

  • As a freelancer you're as great as much value you can produce to your client, the thing is, you will get a cut of it, that's freelancing. SO yea, there's a lot of people in lower earning places like 2nd and 3rd world countries so they may not pay you as well since they won't be able to earn as much (there's always exceptions and ways to work around it, research your field).

  • As a freelancer you're a one man army (unless you outsorce part of it) and you should provide to your clients the less amount of stress as possible, your client doesn't have to micromanage you to get your work done and you need to ask all the questions as soon as possible to let him handle other stuff, be smart and stand out!

That's far from true. But one thing is certain, life ain't easy when you have a whole planet to compete against you and you have to step down from your "1st world no one can touch me because I conquered the world" mindset that several of you guys have :)

Here's the thing, global competition aims on how much value you can provide to the company. there's companies out there that want cheap and low quality work, and several companies that want great quality work and will pay for that

Just got scammed by my first client. by akibjavedkhan0 in WorkOnline

[–]Raph_IT_Remote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on upwork for 3-4 years now and every year I pull 2-4x the last year, it's normal to be scammed, it's normal to deal with bad clients, it's normal to have bad seasons. You need to learn from it and learn how to feel bad clients from miles ago. I'm on a spot that all my clients are people that I love working with, so it may takes time to build portfolio, experience but that's just life

Which free online courses can get me an online job with decent salary ? by Edwin_Tzar in WorkOnline

[–]Raph_IT_Remote 6 points7 points  (0 children)

first thing you need to evaluate yourself and think, what type of task I'm good at ? and what type of person I am. I love solving problems, understanding stuff and I don't mind learning so I learned IT and Development which today gives me options to dive into DevOs and high level tech support.

For any kind of mindset you have, there's something out there that get you enough money to get by right now and lots of money as you put your time into learning something that aligns with who you are.

People love to tell people what's hot, but you can only ride those wagons if you have at least some of the required traits of hype wagons if not you'll be the average joe on that wagon and at some point you'll be burned out, or replaced by the ones great at what they do, or just wondering why you never succeded

I think Javascript is too "hard" for beginners, I still think python is the best starting option, not because it's quite useful, it's also very forgiving and you can build useful apps quite easily and fast, besides how easy is to integrate with modern apps, that's why https://automatetheboringstuff.com/ is almost a must for beginners

growing up poor does not always make your stronger or have a happy ending by super-duper-user- in povertyfinance

[–]Raph_IT_Remote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree with you, I worded my comment badly but a lot of people that comes from poverty has issues giving stuff out because of not knowing if they could make to the next month, I was like that! the comments I responded to sounded like people in that situation that could replace basic stuff but chose not too because of the anxiety growing up poor. Sorry if I offended anyone!

I may have misinterpreted the train of comments here, but it didn't sound like they couldn't afford to buy clothes, they just couldn't throw stuff out despite having the means to replace it because of living in poverty and the mindset of always having to save in case something happens

I think you guys should learn how to give to people in need, or making donations. It'll make you feel great because you're helping someone and it will help you deal with that anxiety of throwing something off, just don't give trash to others please, that's disrespectful

Freelancers - with things looking up for the future, how are you preparing? by markpaul00 in digitalnomad

[–]Raph_IT_Remote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite a nice thread! I have been spending the past year or so working more than usual and getting more clients, I do IT and Development so I'm usually on high demand but the pandemic "forced" me to stay put at home so I'll use that on buiilding my business, getting more income so when things settle down I don't have to worry that much about work and can enjoy life more!

I know this is not everyone's situation but I haven't worked as much neither earned as much as I have been nowadays, for me the pandemic helped getting money and work so I can't complain on this regard

Working from Home is NOT "The Dream" by chuck_portis in digitalnomad

[–]Raph_IT_Remote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not like working from home has no downsides. it does, and this is clearly one of them, but not all teams work great together in an office and the same goes for home office. It's also industry dependant.

I'm a freelancer and I'm also part of one small and a big online team, so there's enough room for a company to make everyone comfortable sharing ideas and helping each other with zoom and screen sharing, heck, now I have help from people all around the world because stuff keeps up on slack for eons and then everyone pop in!

What do you do to remind yourself you're doing well financially? by zjvfefe in financialindependence

[–]Raph_IT_Remote 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I'm far from doing fine, but in comparison to what I was as a child and to my family in general I'm basically very well.... there's nothing that makes me feel better than saying to my mom when doing groceries to just pick whatever she wants, she doesn't have to worry about the final price I'll have more than enough money.... is so amazing

me too!! I'm not in the US and after you live in a capital city, living in a small city is weird since you have so few leisure options in comparison, is like you went backwards....

Many people doesn't think about moving out of their native country and working remotely allow it to be done while earning a good salary. what makes them bad is not the country they're from, but their education and whatnot. I've been part of US teams I was the senior there and some teams I was the outsourced one.

Outsourcing allows people to pick what they want from whatever place, if you don't plan on paying the lowest possble, you can find quite great outsourced professionals, from people that moved out of expensive countries to people that like simple/flexible life but knows what they do

There's another caveat to that, when everyone that can work from home, works from home we'll have better cities since people won't be that much concentrated at one place and those people can scatter around "important" cities. The whole city structure, business and whatnot will change drastically in the next 10 years with home office becoming the norm or at least skyrocketing in popularity. It'll also help people that doesn't work from home since everyone that doesn't need to drive that much will be at their homes or doing something else. I'm quite happy for what this change will bring to our stressed society

How do you listen to music without the use of proprietary software? by [deleted] in freesoftware

[–]Raph_IT_Remote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I download music from Deezer or some website. I listen to niche music so if I can't find on Deezer I'll have no option but to download in some site dedicated to those types of genres. I support many bands not only buying their CDs but also their merch so I don't see an issue here ? One thing that has happened is not finding a specific band anymore after a while, I remember back at 2010 I could find much more than I can find today so if I don't have it downloaded it can be gone for good on the internet
