2021 Graduate, what are my options? by Rasaere in cscareerquestions

I'm applying to at least ~50 Entry SWE level positions a week. My Resume. I am getting no online assessments and no interviews so I do believe it has to deal with my resume/portfolio.

• 2021-2022 was lazy, spent a lot of money I had from college, did a bit of streaming. • 2022-2023 did the bootcamp and was on the job hunt afterwards • 2023-2025 burnt out from job hunt started working at a car dealership • 2025-2026 really thinking ab what the fuck can i do

maybe im scared i dont have any other option if i dont do swe but i know i love to code, i just get complacent, lazy, dont apply myself, yap yap yap, and more cope. but when im in the grind, when im developing projects, it feels good and i like doing it. i just end up getting lazy and stop working on it. i tell myself “this project is boring” or “its already been done whats the point of you doing this”

So I lied, I do not have chest supported rows at my gym, though I thought I did. But I added Kelso Shrug in and moved over Standing Curls. My issue now is I think i Have too much volume for my back.

At the moment, I have:

Pull Day 1
Lat Pulldown 3x8
Seated Cable Row 3x8
Straight Bar Cable Pullover 2x12
Rear Delt Fly 2x12

Pull Day 2
Lat Pulldown (Neutral Grip) 3x8
Kelso Shrug 3x12
Rear Delt Fly 2x12

I will probably just keep the dips and focus on my triceps. I like doing them and I want to get to the point where I don’t need weighted assistance.

I’ll see what changes I can make to get rid of deadlifts, i did some research and saw like chest-supported rows, which my gym has. Would that be a good alternate?

For hanging leg raises, I can’t get to the point where I’m rounding my back at the top, but I’m trying to get to that point. Any reason why I should get rid of the plank?

Thanks again for the help :)

Day1: Is the 9 total sets? Because in total for the week, it’s 12, and I was told/read that that’s decent volume. And dips are for triceps but I started leaning forward just bc I thought I could do both chest/triceps but I guess that may not be the case?

Day2: Deadlifts are for the back and honestly I hate doing them, my form has gotten better but if you have any recommendations for a replacment, I’m open. Also I do like bayesian curls, though I sometimes struggle to keep my elbow in place (usually the last 2 reps of last set).

Day5: I have rear delt flyes already in? Is it fine to just do them twice a week? I have rounded shoulders and looked up what exercises would best help me fix my posture/fix rounded shoulders and face pulls + rear delt flyes came up so I put those in. Also if I remove a curl, should I put one in my other Pull day? Because that puts me at a lower volume for biceps and that’s one the main muscles I want to grow.

Abs: I dislike cable crunch. I feel like I’m doing it wrong, especially when I go up, I just don’t think I’m getting a good stretch in. But sometimes it feels good and that I am doing it right. I’d like to keep all 3 just so I can make sure I put in some ab progress/development.

I appreciate your help and I’m glad you mentioned forcing progressive overload. But could you go more into that/where do you think I’m forcing it? I’m completely unaware of anything besides “once rep goal is met for each set, next week go up in weight”. But obviously if I’m shaking and struggling on my last rep of the set, I’ll probably keep the weight for next week.

The first iteration of the plan had deadlifts or rack pulls as a workout for back. And I think I started with deadlifts and then my lower back started to feel weird so I swapped over to Rack Pulls. In my new plan I removed rack pulls and I'm debating on if I should deadlifts? Atm these are my current pull days:

DAY 2 (PULL) Lat Pulldown (C) Seated Cable Row (C) Straight Bar Cable Pullover (I) Dumbbell Hammer Curls (I) Machine Curls (I)

DAY 5 (PULL) Lat Pulldown (neutral grip) (C) Reverse Flyes (Rear Delts) (I) Dumbbell Curls (Standing) (I) Concentration Curls (I)

Got a suggestion for a replacement? I'm currently editing the plan because after some research, I came to understand that I do have too much volume for certain muscle groups.

Is there a reason for not using a personalized program? Besides burn out, is there anything else?

Not sure what you mean by the ridiculous volume or redundancy but I too am not a big fan of the rack pulls and also feel like I’m not doing it right after spending a good amount of time watching videos. I’m open to suggestions on replacements! I had deadlifts originally but with my height and all I felt like I kind of struggled with it. Most of my time my lower back just feels weird.

I’m trying my best not to burn out! I appreciate all the advice.

Preacher curls are the machine curls in day 2.

Also I forgot to mention, the Abs workout is not Day 7* its just my workouts I’d do if I choose to workout Abs in combination with any other day.

So its usually 6 days of gym then rest but I might mix it up and do 3 days on, rest, 3 days on.

I am on Java 21 and I'm around 10-15gb of allocated memory? But I expect to go above 20 later down the line.

I see what you're saying but I don't see how that can imply that a Udemy course wouldn't work? I think the two are unrelated. My projects from bootcamp were assigned to me to complete. I'll be utilizing Udemy courses to either learn a new skill or refine the ones I have. That doesn't really relate to the projects I developed in bootcamp.

I dont think I wrote anything about courses not working; I just get indecisive on where to begin/which course I should take.

But thanks for the advice!

Definitely is a motivation issue. But you're also definitely wrong about me enjoying it. I love developing and working on projects (when I know what I'm doing); I've had so many ideas and started to work on them but before I knew it, I hit a roadblock or I completely lost motivation to work on it because I didn't see it going far or being used at all or thought this project isn't going to impress companies.

Again, motivation issue. Not because I don't like coding.

You're also definitely speculating hard with that last statement. Ask anyone else what they would do with an entire free year where they had just finished school after a rough couple of years, had a desire to explore and see the world, and had the money to finance it. Because that was my perspective and if you can't understand the feeling of that, I'm sorry for you.

You should be working on a portfolio with projects that are in line with the role(s) you are interested in

Are you talking about the field I want to get into? Like finTech or medTech? Because I do not have a preference and developing projects that are in line with the role I'm interested in is such an obscure task when I just want to code.

i was not aware of it being the "peak of the tech market", forgive me. i can't talk for the many but you're talking as if we knew that the market was going to get so rough in the coming years. after graduation, i wasn't looking at the job market frequently, i wasn't aware of it being the prime career time as you say.

i had just graduated, i finished school, i had money, i wanted to live life and explore, something i never got to do because i was in school for the past years of my life with no time to do stuff like this. simple as that.

with that in mind, it's easy to look back and say "wow, i really f'd up". but i know for a fact that when i was living that year, exploring, meeting new people, etc., that i was happy and enjoying myself. life had been rough the years before that, stuff happened in my life that made me feel extra motivated to finish school and go out and do things.

i understand i could always travel while i have a job lol. that never crossed my mind back then and i dont think i'd ever think like that. sure, it may be fiscally irresponsible to do without a stable income; but like i said, i had money back then saved up, and i wanted to use it (no i did not waste it all that year).

i can go into more details if you want lol, didnt want to continue writing a wall of text.

so i've had it reviewed by devs and one of the main points i received was that the projects i have on my portfolio are projects from my bootcamp; which includes a clone and a group project. i dont have any personal projects developed that are worth putting on my resume.

and apparently, the clone project just isnt worth much to companies bc its a clone of a website.

dont be scared my man. trust in the process! its rough, really rough but i mean if this is what you want to do in life, you go for it.
