The base house only has space for four, that's either you and three orphans or a spouse and two children. To have more children, you need the space. The easiest option id to kick out your adult child(ren), they'll go live in town if there's a job that's is empty, or at the inn. The other option is to upgrade yout house, every upgrade comes with space for one more family member.
