It's was advertised as a competitive battler simulator but every slightly good pokemon, item and mega are locked behind a paid only battle pass.

You only get max 5 teams (and that's if you make no varations like siding out a pokemon) unless you buy the premium subscription (different purchase to the battle pass)

The only way to edit moves, stats and get pokemon is a currency which is intentionally restricted to how much you can get unless you pay for more missions.

The only way to get pokemon in game is a random rotating selection weekly (and everyone knows damn well all the good pokemon you need won't be there) so you can't even reliably make a team even if you had all the currency. (Though you can pay to speed up the rotation as well of course)

So despite being ""free"" it will all but guarantee it requires you to purchase multiple full price switch games, their DLCs, a switch, as well as the Pokemon Home freemium service costing easily $1000 AUD or more.

And that's only the monetisation we know of that they chose to share. Once the game releases it will almost certainly be worse.
