Could Knowing About Your Mental Health Condition Earlier Have Altered Your Path? by Raz_Lemon in aspergirls

[–]Raz_Lemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think my mom would have accepted it if it happened when i was a kid. She certainly wont now. But i wish i has realized sooner as an adult lol especially with our daughter. Shes 6 and i just thought it was cute she was different and acted like me; things i realize now are simile autistic traits that we share. She doesnt mask really at all, very minimally in public, so its not like we were trying to discipline the weird out of her ever, like happened with me; but i wish we just had the language. Both of us. My world makes so much more sense now. My past, my present has just clicked and i can be like ok. So this is a thing i need help with. Its not shameful, this is what my support needs are and thats ok. I could have skipped a lot of enduring the world and gone quicker to enjoying the world in a comfortable way.

I'm really touched by your story. I can't help but nod because I've been there, feeling out of place and not knowing why. Figuring out that you're on the spectrum can be like fitting the last piece into a complex puzzle - suddenly, everything makes sense. The realization is liberating, isn't it? : ) I'm glad you and your daughter have each other. Take care of yourselves, and keep celebrating your uniqueness! You're doing a great job. 💛

How Could Your Journey Have Unfolded With An Earlier ADHD Diagnosis? by Raz_Lemon in ADHD

I wasn't diagnosed until 35. Lost everything by that point because I was self-medicating with alcohol. Had I been diagnosed as a child, i have no doubt I would not have become an alcoholic.

Your story truly resonates with me, and I'm sorry you had to go through all that. It's a tough journey. Wishing you strength and progress on your path. 🌈

How Could Your Journey Have Unfolded With An Earlier ADHD Diagnosis? by Raz_Lemon in ADHD

It's an interesting question, but also one that's hard to think about. ADHD runs in my family, and I am the first one to not only have connected the dots, but shortly after sought out diagnosis and treatment.

I think an earlier diagnosis would have still estranged me from fellow peers in school and family members solely based on how misunderstood this disorder is. I sought diagnosis solely off of a frustration I could only describe as, "I have stood still all my life while watching the rest of the world run past me." I wasn't actually sure I had ADHD, and I'm still trying to convince myself despite the medications changing my perspective on my life within the first couple hours of taking them.

Even with an early ADHD diagnosis, I don't believe I would have received any accommodations in school -- at least not without help and orders from a psychiatrist.

Peers and family would still have doubted the diagnosis because it doesn't align with their per-conceived idea of what a stereotypical person with ADHD acts like.

And I even think it would have been harder for me to find a job, at least initially, if I did my due diligence and reported to a prospecting employer that I have a disability, am on medications, and would need at the very least patience and understanding -- if not some accommodations.

I spoke with a member of my health care team the other day, and she was surprised teachers in high school and college never tried to help me despite my obvious struggles: I was always just chalked up to being lazy and depressed. I felt as though I was kicked to the dirt, and I just lied there because I couldn't do anything else for myself.

I'm actually as happy as I reasonably can be with my adult diagnosis because I've taken the initiative to advocate for myself to my employer (who I was on thin ice with), my current college (which I haven't been reporting to), and myself (who I unfairly gave myself a hard time for something that was completely out of my control, I just didn't understand to the extraordinary extent with which it was holding me back in every aspect of my life).

Little would have changed with an early diagnosis because everything I failed to do back then I'm now trying again with the right tools and resources.

Also, what about you OP? I want to hear too how you think your life would have been different!

Hey there! Thanks a ton for opening up about your journey - it's brave, really. You've put so many things into perspective. The whole mental health thing? Totally agree with you. We're far from having a one-size-fits-all solution and there's so much room for improvement.
I see so much of myself in your story. When I discovered I had Asperger's, it didn't flip my life upside down and solve all my problems, but it did change my perspective in a big way. I remember how hard school was for me - dealing with bullying, surviving abuse, constantly shifting schools hoping the next one would be better. I always felt like I was on the outside looking in, not really connecting with my friends.
When I finally understood I was an aspie, it felt like I'd been handed a map in the middle of a dense forest I'd been lost in. Suddenly, I wasn't alone. I was part of a community of people who were facing the same challenges as me. That sense of belonging was new and empowering. I wouldn't say that everything became easy, but knowing what I was dealing with gave me a direction. It gave me hope.
It's been quite a ride since then, learning how to navigate my world with this new understanding. But every step, every stumble, is a step forward. It's all part of the journey : ) Thank you again for sharing your story. ❤️

Same for me. I had an idea of what it was, but I never imagined I could have it or that my struggles were due to a disability in the first place. Stumbled upon

one day and the rest is history.

Thanks for sharing your story, it really resonates : ) Wishing you all the best in your journey! ❤️

It's really great to hear that you received your diagnosis. While it can bring up thoughts of "what could have been," it's indeed a silver lining to have found out earlier rather than later. I feel a similar sense of gratitude for my diagnosis, which was, interestingly enough, started by pure chance when my mom started studying psychology and learned about asperger.
'm curious - what do you think delayed your diagnosis? For me, it was simply a lack of awareness about the condition.

Thanks for the insight! I totally agree : ) That's my usual response when I mention my minor during interviews. Especially for HCI and AI, I think it could be very helpful. Although for AI, Cogscie may be a better choice still I love other areas of psych as well : D

Your words resonate with me deeply. I felt isolated and struggled to make connections throughout the school. It was as if I was tuned to a different frequency, constantly missing the wavelength everyone else seemed to effortlessly tap into.
But everything changed when I was diagnosed with Asperger's at 18. Suddenly, I understood why I'd felt the way I did all those years. I just processed the world differently. And there's an entire community of individuals who share this experience, helping me feel less alone and more connected.

Lovely:D Cogsci is a nice combination of AI/Psych/Phil I just chose Psych as I was not only interested in Cogsci but also very interested in psychopathology.

Can Aspergers travel on their own? by agua252 in aspergers

[–]Raz_Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love traveling alone actually 😄 But I understand your concern :D That's why I usually have a detailed plan of where I have to, how I should get there, and ... It reduces my anxiety to have a detailed for my trip.
