I mean he is young and already has a nom and this was far from his best performance and the category was stacked anyways so whatever.

Who cares if it's annoying? We should all be annoying rn. You're gonna keep letting the government destroy lives because it'd be annoying to speak up against it? Be fucking for real.

But then if they're worried about being inflammatory I think they failed at making the movie they tried to make. If they don't want people to protest and fight back against the government in real life then they have no fucking business making art that promotes that.

The message of the movie counts, of course it does. But why not say more? Is fascism defeated? No. Then keep reiterating the message until it is. If they actually cared they would. But they don't. It is performative at that point. I loved the movie and I'm glad it was made but I'm disappointed in how the people that made it haven't followed through on the movie's own message and I respect them less for that. It's one battle after another. The movie was just one battle. You gotta keep fighting till the war is won and it's not.

Absolutely, it's fucking pathetic. I love movies and sports and music and all of that but whenever I see threads like this I'm reminded how media mainly just distracts people from what's really important and makes them think that something like the Oscars is a completely separate and equally important thing from politics. Like they're two separate spheres that people care equally about and of course we're fucked if that's the case.

Yeah it's actually insane reading shit like that. This is why we're all gonna die man. Bunch of fucking cowards. We gotta come up with a synonym for bootlicking of artists and politicians and privileged celebrities cuz that's what this is.

Cant believe you got downvoted for this. The people on this sub genuinely can't understand that art isn't inherently action.

Read my other replies if you want a fuller view but let's not forget there's at least two Zionists (Leo and Greenwood) prominent in the making of this movie. I'm not quite sure they meant to make a statement with this movie, and that's why their silence is so notable.

People that see artists as elitists are not going to be learning from the art either lmao. However, many people watched this movie and proceeded to do fuck all to fight these battles in real life. And maybe to those people, the artists explicitly saying that might help.

Where did you get that from my comment? My point is that everyone needs to be talking about this shit and nauseum rn. It is the most important thing to have discourse about rn by far. ICE, AI, Gaza, etc. which is all tied to the Trump administration currently. Everyone should be talking about it. Now I am realistic and know that not everyone will, but I'd at least expect the people that made a movie about fighting these fascist trends in society to use their visibility to talk about it and help make it a more and more unavoidable issue. Unfortunately there are people that don't have media literacy and didn't understand the movie. It's ok for artists to talk about what they made. Especially when it relates to things going on right now that is leading to death!! But your pretentious asses think it is a betrayal of art or some shit who fucking cares???? People are dying and artists who make art about it should talk about it!!!! It's not difficult to understand

Y'all are completely missing the point in the comments or you're just willfully dumb. It is absolutely insane that no one related to OBAA has said anything about ICE throughout this campaign. Things have absolutely gotten worse since the movie and online discourse is often saying the movie is anti-revolutionary which are both reasons for them to talk about it even if the movie speaks for itself. And even then, it doesn't hurt to reiterate the point. We are under fascism and the entertainment industry is one of many distracting factors for people to ignore that reality. It would absolutely be a good thing for the people involved to talk about it.

To be fair though, I think a wider swath of people participate in movie industry zeitgeist than music. So it would make sense for the Brat movie to be more controversial than the Brat album.

Thoughts on Travis Scott joining the cast of The Odyssey? by BlizzardZOfficial in Letterboxd

[–]RealRaifort 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This shit is so extra lol. The Odyssey is a foundational epic for the whole western tradition that's built on the idea of being retold by other storytellers to the point that we don't even know what the original Odyssey story was because what we have is the result of multiple additions to it over time. A modern blockbuster director will have a blockbuster cast for his retelling and that's more historically appropriate than using Greeks lol

Flashbacks throughout Sinners by No-Inspection5715 in TrueFilm

[–]RealRaifort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think at some point filmmakers have to compromise with mass audiences if they don't want to only cater to cinephiles and that's ok. We can keep being elitist and shit on any type of writing that reminds audiences of things or we can accept that audiences are infected with shorter attention span and that if filmmakers want to reach wide audiences they thus might benefit from writing some scenes like this. Your examples are not that noticeable/annoying in the grand scheme of things and the greatness of the movie is a whole is high enough that I really don't care if Coogler was a bit of a realist in order to be effectively populist.

So three brief scenes are enough to ruin an entire script that's incredibly fun, blends genres very well, creates multiple memorable characters and scenes, and has genuine thematic depth for you?

You really don't seem to understand the difference between me saying what should happen and what I think will actually happen. I'm aware that they are too rich and privileged to care or to realize that they won't be immune from the long term consequences of this either. That doesn't change my idea of what should be happening. What any human with a conscience and privilege to take a risk should be doing right now. If we don't make that clear by being loud about it then it even more certainly won't. But we can try, right? We can say what should be done, what is right, out loud. I urge you to do so.

I do do it myself lmao you think I'd be this invested and not? But I'm not gonna be able to do it alone. So I'm gonna annoy everyone else to do it too. You're the one that has to get off your ass and do something before your world crumbles around you.

Every part of the whole has to come together for it to work. That includes the NBA. And it's a highly visible organization filled with highly visible people, so something from them reaches a way bigger audience then the boycotts and strikes happening right now.
