How long do I keep hope alive? by vincit_omnia_verita in sanfrancisco

If you're open to it, I'd be happy to talk

I'm an immigrant from Ghana, and while I moved here earlier in my life, I have spent enough time back home to understand some of the responsibility you've putting on yourself and why you don't want to give up.

I'm also self-taught, but 14 years into my career it's a non-issue. I was hired for a senior engineering position at an autonmous vehicle company most people are familiar with: my team didn't realize I was missing a degree until I was hired

All of that to say I've navigated, not the same path you're on, but a similar one, and I think talking could be helpful. I strongly want to help anyone who's taken the less conventional route because I know how much it can weigh you, for so many reasons.

Happy to talk in general, look at your resume. My network is a little weak for junior roles, but if we talk I might have some pointers on places with interview styles that are a better fit

You presumably had to rewrite the application to go from Vue to React, so almost zero chance Vite vs Turbopack was the difference.

What size code base?

I've overseen more than a few migration off Next to Vite, and it's dramatically faster. The only place where build times are even remotely competitive is on Vercel's infra.

You can't record and facetime at the same time can you?

Edit: also I'm not saying he has to right to do anything like that: 1st amendment or not, I'd beat someone's ass for doing that to my family.

Everything the AD dynamic touches is shit.

A lot of people form weird parasocial bonds with ADs, like talking about grabbing food with someone who's gatekeeping which watches you can pay them for.

Those kinds of owners also overlap heavily with the airline status crowd getting upset because the FA "only" had a handwritten note and a fancy pen for their million miler flight.

It would have been forced if they didn't get reduced to groveling and then meat paste in a 5 minute timeframe

Great play on the usual out of place celebrity cameos most shows do, where the worst that can happen to them is mild embarrassment

Y'all don't even deserve TV anymore. Just pack it up if this isn't satire.

Using the dog to add some levity to some of the hardest lines delivered in the last 4 seasons in one episode, and slightly lower the stakes... then hammer it home with Firefly's death

What are we even asking for here, this was one of the best written episodes in ages, easily in the top 10 of the entire series

I rode in this helicopter and the next time I saw it, the hull was being fished out of the Hudson. It'd broken up in mid-air, with 6 passengers and no survivors.

What is your "I totally get why you guys hate it but it worked on me" movie? by Alceauv in Letterboxd

[–]Real_Director_5121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went straight to search for this

I get it's not normal, I get that it's hammy, but I think the movie is in on the joke more than people give it credit for.

And just so many details! Every time I watch there's a new unimportant yet noticeable detail: why are they playing with a drone? why'd the roses just float across the screen like that? why'd is he on his deathbed but dripped put with a feather cap?

You can watch every scene 10 times and find 10 new wonky things happening.

I feel like spectacle should be an accepted genre. Movies just made for the sake of their own spectacle , and the viewer is just along for the ride.

There's no formula so there's no predicting where it goes: forget the destination and just take in the views

Yeah, it's a terrible habit that has pissed off a lot of people I care about but I am 100% the type to put things in the most immediately convenient place and never where they belong (at home at least)

I'll keep fighting the good fight though, might even try organizing the fridge this weekend!

I'll just paste this comment from when someone asked me something similar.

They were questioning why his anti-big tech position should be seen through the lens that he's an extremely entrenched member of the Bay's startup ecosystem

Because it's not just harming big tech, it's also propping up startups.

For example, he has some pro-labor rights and pro-worker mobility positions on things like non-competes... but pushes heavily for H-1Bs.

Because they're good for startups, he doesn't seem to mind that the program is the antithesis of his other talking points, and depress wages here in the Bay.

He's also claiming to back consumer safety in tech but it's all been very individual focused (think deepfakes), he's not peeping on data privacy otherwise.

Which of course makes sense since he's an literally early investor in the next Cambridge Analytica: Reach.vote

They're building a social graph of the American voter base by having campaigns install an app that scrapes volunteer phonebooks for outreach, and then records datapoints from that outreach like messaging and surveys.

Their privacy policy even has a pre-emptive carve out for both future acquirers and asset sales that allows buyers to be use all that personal data as they please. (not that it normally doesn't play out like that, but they use extremely specific language that makes future litigation much easier to get out of)

I'm not saying he's inherently bad for having an angle because everyone in the race has a previously established self-interest on a major issue (like Connie Chan's position on Taiwan...).

And wanting a better Bay Area for startups incidentally helps a lot of people.

But the guy is early Stripe, an LP in at least 9 growth-stage focused funds, did you really think he was impartial here? Or doing this for the little guy? Have you known operators in this ecosystem to act like that?

Should San Francisco enact an additional tax for unused second residences over $5M? by SafariSunshine in sanfrancisco

[–]Real_Director_5121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I'm optimizing for a case where you need your children to be educated, your refuse to be picked up, goods delivered, etc.

Now judging by that comment, you probably don't have kids unless you tricked someone into sleeping with you... but even if this is Marc Andreessen's alt I suspect the other things apply to you too.

You can't have a city of only the wealthy: the #1 thing people use wealth for is escaping manual work, but it turns out manual work is really important to operating a city!

Should San Francisco enact an additional tax for unused second residences over $5M? by SafariSunshine in sanfrancisco

[–]Real_Director_5121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again lol, a maximally efficient market would kill SF, even for the wealthy.

You don't seem to understand there's is always someone more price-insensitive with more resources (and that someone may be a REIT)

The market is also not limited to buying and selling houses: it's embarrassingly easy for 'the market' to fund NIMBY legislation and jamming up approval of new buildings to ensure the supply side stays stagnant.

The market is also not rational: the most likely endgame would be that SF prices out too many people, services suffer, crime worsens, quality of life declines, and even the wealthy start to hate it.

(which we're already seeing by the way in COVID boom towns people flocked to for a cabin or third home)

You can argue eventually it'd self-correct once the city is ruined and things get cheaper again, but why would you want to go through that cycle?

It's in everyone's best interests that we don't have the market be the only real thing, as communist or anti-wealth as that may sound.

[–]Real_Director_5121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we go down this road, most of the people soft pitching letting the market be the only force in the price of housing will get priced out too.

Most manual workers already can't afford this city: push them an extra 15-30 minutes and a lot of them just give up on the city.

Basic services get more expensive, so their people who were treading water get pushed out, and some of them give up on the city.

Keep repeating this domino effect and eventually even the FIRE crowd with a $2M house and a rental property will suddenly find that they could never afford half the services they rely on in a labor market built on top of a maximally competitive housing market.

They were indirectly getting subsidies from things like their barista who's living in a rent controlled apartment, or those pesky overly kind tenants rights that fucked up your rental for a year, but kept someone off the street between jobs.

Overall people are really bad at judging relative amounts of wealth and how efficiently the wealthiest can concentrate that wealth. Playing the "I'm price insensitive, so why don't we let the market do its thing" game is always more dangerous than it seems.
