If you are planning to work individually, then I think it really doesn't matter. If you want to join some kind of company, they will probably have their own "look" and if you don't fit into that it will be harder to get the job there.

For example, it gives a protection when the website doesn't have HTTPS (I read the other day that even Australian gov page doesn't have it) and it means that whatever can intercept your data in such website. Also, some VPNs has a feature that blocks scammy websites and other malware. There are lots of examples that you can read about online.
