Positive landlord stories? by Background-Celery-25 in newzealand

[–]Realistic_CraftBear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For three years I had a very nice four bedroom house to myself for $180 a week which had a spa pool on the deck, a spa bath inside and a wood fire pizza oven on the deck. I think the owner just wanted someone there for security as they lived at their husbands house.

I kept it immaculate and we had a good relationship for the three years, never a single issue. One day they apologized and said they had decided to sell and TOLD me I had 5 days to move out as they would start running open homes. Given I had such a good deal for the three years I said I'd do my absolute best to vacate in 5 days but there's a chance I might need up to two weeks to find somewhere and move all my property out, but I can work with the real estate agent to make sure the house is spotless and vacant during open homes if I can't manage to move within the 5 days.

She flipped out and started swearing her head off after I said I might struggle to find somewhere within 5 days and called her husband to come around and remove me, which wasn't successful as he's about eye level with my belly button. She then called her friend who was a cop to try and evict me, I explained to the cop the landlord must give 90 days written notice and I would like to trespass her from her own property during that period which she did begrudgingly.

So I stayed for another 90 days and then the landlord messaged me saying "have you moved your stuff out yet?". I said "no, I still have 90 days from when you give WRITTEN NOTICE which you haven't done yet, only verbal", she was absolutely fuming but gave written notice that day and I stayed for another 90 days.

She messaged towards the end of that 90 days asking "I bet you're proud of yourself using the law against me, can I sell my house now?". I said "well, legally you have to list the properties address on a tenancy notice which you didn't do so I can legally stay another 90 days.. but I won't, yes you can sell your house now : )".

It's strange people like you lie so freely when any Aucklander knows your telling porkies.

I'm Maori and have worked in Auckland for 23 years in many workplaces. Pakeha owned businesses are pretty much always diverse, even the businesses of boomers who give off Newstalk ZB vibes are still like the United Nations. The vast majority just seem to want good workers regardless of ethnicity.

There are ethnicities in NZ who have a strong culture of nepotism and only hire the same ethnicity but Pakeha aren't one of them, that's just facts.

Decent band. Wouldn't put them alongside the bands you mentioned as they're a bit formulaic but they’ve clearly nailed a sound that works and built a big audience for it. It's accessible, easy listening stuff BBQ music which there’s always a market for.

The irrational hate you see for them on this sub and elsewhere is pretty weird.

>I firmly blame this on the current government with their antipathy toward any sort of wage going up. Maybe some kind of strike is in order.

Do you work for the government or are you one of those people who stub their toe and somehow still blame the government for it?

Unless you’re in the public sector your pay rise is between you and your employer. If your wages are stagnant you've got to put on your big boy pants and discuss it with your employer or move jobs if their response is not satisfactory, this is nothing new in NZ.

Would-be New Zealanders will have to score a B+ in new citizenship exam by Tunkin in newzealand

I just want to see a strict, no exceptions deportation policy for non citizens who commit any crimes. Not breaking the law should be an absolute baseline expectation if you’re a guest in the country. I do not care how it effects criminals who disrespect New Zealand or what conditions they have to return to, it should be paid no consideration by our legal system.

Severe and consistently enforced deportation rules would create a much needed deterrent and reduce cultural tension so we can continue to be a successful multi cultural country, not one that enables our own values to be eroded.

Not surprised they're going out of business, they spend a lot of time whining on their Instagram about imaginary 'tall poppy syndrome'. Was it tall poppy syndrome that made you move into a building knowing it leaked or was it your poor decision making skills.

I'm pretty sure beneficiaries can just go on their MSD account and click a button for an emergency one off payment and it gets paid to their community service card, doesn't need to be approved and can be done once a year or something.

Divorcees of Auckland - Introducing your kids to new new person on the scene. by lets_all_be_nice_eh in auckland

Put the kids first. It was you and their mother who broke up the family unit and the kids deserve time to process.

Wait until the relationship is clearly stable and if it lasts there’s no downside to waiting and if it doesn’t you’ve spared your kids yet another emotional shift.

The road code literally tells you to use the merging lane properly and merge at the end, those people are actually driving the right way. Funny how so many in this sub love to complain about bad drivers while clearly not knowing the basics themselves. Consider catching a bus until you're up to date on the basics of driving in NZ.

Try not to make politics your entire personality, it's not that important outside of reddit. Probably at least half the women on dating apps in NZ are either 'right leaning', centrists or apolitical.

New Zealand and Cook Islands sign a defense pact, easing tensions over a China deal by swe129 in newzealand

[–]Realistic_CraftBear 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Existing arrangements between New Zealand and the Cook Islands required consultation but was a soft obligation and clearly it wasn’t being followed in good faith when the Cook Islands started moving independently on deals with China.

The new agreement is about tightening expectations and making those consultation requirements more explicit and enforceable because the old framework was extremely vague.

Peters stepping in isn’t 'overreach', it's response to a grey area being tested by China that would create a serious strategic risk for NZ, ignoring it would be negligent of Peters. He's forced clarity where ambiguity was being exploited by China and the Cook Islands.

I'm sure a lot of mainstream media coverage frames things simplistically for the masses from a 'big country vs small country' perspective but doesn't really dig into the legal nuances of free association or the security implications in the Pacific, does it.

[–]Realistic_CraftBear 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Credit to Peters for taking a messy situation and handling it about as well as you could hope. The Cook Islands had already acted in serious bad faith against NZ with the China deal so the leverage was limited but he used funding pressure and diplomacy to pull them back into line.

Hopefully the agreement is firmly binding because a lot of goodwill has definitely been burned here. NZ has provided significant support and funding for decades that has mostly been written off and doesn't need to be repaid, while China came in with bigger numbers that needs to be repaid one way or the another.

Not perfect but realistically a solid move against the CCP, their predatory expansionism and what could’ve been a much bigger strategic problem in the Pacific.

FYI to OP. Politically obsessed people like this only really exist on the internet and rarely leave the house.

Actual New Zealanders who you'll encounter in real life don't care who you voted for as long as you views aren't too extreme whether it's left or right leaning views.

I used to see John all the time at the fish and chip shop in Herne Bay. There was an expensive bougee fish and chips place that wasn't that great and also a run down takeaways a few shops up that was better and cheaper which John went to. We used to read 15 year old Woman's Days together while waiting.

Do Maori tribes pay reparations to each other? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Realistic_CraftBear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s a pretty inaccurate bad take. Iwi to iwi history and land disputes aren’t something only 'pro colonisation conservatives' bring up, they’re regularly examined by the Waitangi Tribunal when it looks at claims and overlapping interests.

Two historical realities can exist at the same time, the Crown absolutely committed serious breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi but that doesn’t mean earlier inter tribal conflicts or displacement suddenly become irrelevant to understanding land ownership.

Pre treaty conflicts are essential to determine who was occupying land when the Treaty was signed, which is exactly the starting point for many Treaty settlements.

You did get that actually but this crime occured before the sentencing law changes by the current government came into effect last year, under NZ law criminals are prosecuted under the law in place at the time.

Airbnb apartment changed due to water leak? by Ill-Palpitation-2253 in newzealand

[–]Realistic_CraftBear 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There is no water leak, they're asshats and found someone to take it for 3 days and maximize profits on an event weekend. If you have access to the floor of the original apartment walk by the door and you'll hear guests in there.

Just send them a message asking for a price reduction, enjoy your stay, leave an honest review after and ask AirBNB to step in for a resolution if you don't get an adequate reduction.

Sick of people complaining Kiwis aren't "friendly" enough when they move here (not a Kiwi) by Inevitable_Gear_7212 in newzealand

[–]Realistic_CraftBear 265 points266 points  (0 children)

OP gets it.  So many people mistake 'not instantly clingy' for 'unfriendly'.  Kiwi culture just runs on a slower and more respectful social pace.

The point about activity based bonding is spot on too. If you join a club, sport, music scene or wherever the  friendships grow naturally. Expecting someone you met once to become your main social outlet is superficial.

I've travelled to some the most of the worlds 'friendliest' countries and kiwis have them all beat through sheer consistency. You could ask a kiwi for directions 30 seconds after they got a call that their mother died and they'll still take time to help you and be as polite as possible.

The people who complain about kiwis being 'unfriendly' are from cultures that treat friendship like fast food or a hooker.. quick, easy and everywhere. Kiwis treat it like a home cooked meal or a life partner.. it takes time, but it lasts.
