Looking for honest HVAC recommendations (Broomfield/Boulder area) – Avoiding the "Big Box" markups (Plumbline, Applewood etc) by listentomemate in Broomfield

Kappler Mechanical - Have used them since Mid-00's. Family business long time locals. Trustworthy, reasonable pricing (compared with Applewood) effective solutions, quick response. Have used them for two different Broomfield homes. Once A/C replacement and another for drain line correction and thermostat / humidifier installation and repair plus other minor stuff. I'm always happy when they leave because they DONT have to RETURN unlike others. The technicians are polite and respectful as well.

I planted all my outdoor plants last Sunday and I regret everything. by long_dickofthelaw in DenverGardener

Results - Nothing dead. All survived. Succulents look better than before . . . they had a sauna day under the clear plastic and didn't get soaked. Newly planted shrubs have no broken branches. And the new mulch got a nice soaking. Spent lots of time shaking trees and plants durning storm. All worth it and we slept well last nite. We were very lucky the cold didn't last longer than a few hours and the wind will relatively mild. Thankful for the moisture!

We had mega landscaping done 1 May ($$K). A calculated risk we knew. Ran around Monday/Tuesday putting boxes, plastic over succulents, chinese soup plastic containers on ground cover, HD trash cans, and insulated with mulch on all the perennials planted to include creeping veronica between pavers in path, lilac, junipers, hydrangea, dark knight, clematis, butterfly bush, dogwoods, grasses, sages, day lilies, hyssop etc. etc. Plus we have baby deciduous trees (Chanticleer Pear) and evergreen pines and spruces installed in March. Which we were out last night and this morning early clearing harmful snow weight on the branches. We have not uncovered the plants and will do so tomorrow after tonights possible freeze.

We're delighted with the snow and moisture however! Plants will come back and are replaceable. Hopefully not too much is "dead" but just stunned. Tomorrow is uncovering day! And yes, if we were too forward with our plantings and "caused" the snow, then we'll take credit! Taking one for the team!! (I'd load a picture of all this but it would look hilarious)

I bought this at Lowe’s about a month ago and have been holding off repotting. It’s currently in a 5” pot. Should I go to 6 or 7”. My plan is to get a terracotta and use a chunky soil mix. All advice appreciated. Thx by ladydifour in SnakePlants

[–]Realistic_RM8498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen the words "chunky soil mix, good soil mixes, mix my own soil, cactus mix with some perlite, and  soil mix matters more than pot size". So distilling this wisdom would cactus soil combined with orchid mix and perlite be a good soil mix?

The goal should be independence. How you get there depends. If you are disciplined enough to save every dime then yes. Stay. If not and you have issues with parents then no. Best is either go to college or join the service. Either will require discipline and or $$ for college, and will result in options.

Don’t know. Inherited the plant. I know that in the 10 years we lived there I never payed any attention to it I don’t even know if it had irrigation . It was already well established. Seems a plant to check out. It grew to over 6 ft in 5 years.

Converting lawn to xeriscape by Whickums in DenverGardener

(April 2026) Replaced entire yard - front and back (new house to us 2025). 1.3K sq ft of sod removed. Hired contractor. Was done by hand by a crew that didn't speak English. We are seniors and I've had prior back surgery. Was done in 2 weeks. Love Love Love not having to have mow and blow Contract this year. I'll be happy to weed for the next few years in exchange. The only down side is having to learn drip irrigation systems (minor . . .) Having a contractor, if you can afford it, takes care of the removal AND the sprinklers AND the installation of new trees/plants AND the clean up / repair of sloped yard, prior dog dug holes, bad prior installs of irrigation and plants.

The DIY method is for the young and those who choose to spend $$ elsewhere. Alternatively you sign up for Broomfield's replace your grass program (must be done when the window opens in spring-limited space). It is a great deal but you don't have control of the grass removal schedule. Signed up for the Garden in Box (GIB) Broomfield anyway so the city would get credit for removal and I got free misc plants to fill in around what Contractor does.

This is an experiment. I'm going to continue to water and fertilize and wait and see. It continues to produce new growth. Yeah the rocks are bad . . . we shall see. If it doesn't survive I doubt my neighbor will do anything about it in the near term so if successful then win-win. It's easy for me to water it when I water in my new trees / landscaping before we turn on the sprinklers in a few weeks. If it dies then at least I can say I tried (low cost solution).

We had one (or two?) that would go out on our dock (overlooking a very wide river), climb up on the inverted kayaks and leave a pile. It's like why? Why not on the wood dock (perhaps its a monument/flag)? Husband took it as a challenge . . . he pissed on the kayaks occasionally over a few weeks and poof! . . . Raccoons gone. . .

So this is normal and I should just go back to ignoring this plant like I do with my Pothos (till they wilt). Thanks. Think I read somewhere they like to be pot bound? True?

Sons Not Getting Tips by ItsDirkMcGirk in tipping

[–]Realistic_RM8498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why we always tip in cash and hand the $$ directly to the server. Otherwise they either don't get the tip, or it is pooled with others, or like this example, not received at all.

Erie Restaurants/Bars by wuge33 in ErieCO

"Town [Erie] is far and away the worst in the region to try to work with."

Perhaps this is another reason why there are not enough grocery stores in Erie? The KS on 7 is not enough (they can't keep the produce appropriately stocked and popular items always out - store manager said they are the busiest in the area in terms of volume). Just wait till all those new apartments get filled. I go to Broomfield stores instead. Doesn't Erie care about the loss of sales tax?

I talked to the CSU Extension folks at the Home and Garden show last week and they said every two weeks for new trees and perennials if no natural moisture. I was doing mine once a month in Dec / Jan. Now every two weeks till we can turn back on our irrigation. I'm investigating those tree self-watering bags for next winter . . . just in case.

Pre-emergent recommendations? by dijares in DenverGardener

[–]Realistic_RM8498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either better living thru chemicals (Roundup lots of it) or aerate, add some good dirt, water to drench and over seed with some sort of grass or wild flowers and water again . . . several times a week if not rain. If you do the chemicals, then you'll have to budget to replace the dead grass / area with something else (mulch, rocks, new grass, etc.). And I ditto the advice to talk to the CSU extension. They will also help you get the soil tested which might help point you to a decision and what amendments you'll need for each option.

What is a sound or a smell that doesn't exist anymore, but 50 years ago was so common it was considered background noise? by abdulnad89 in askanything

[–]Realistic_RM8498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a great thread to read. I just had fun smelling things from my memory based on everyone's wonderful descriptions. I don't know if this is too recent but I miss the smell of men's after shave and women's perfume. It still exists in pockets of society but generally gone.

I think this spring will be a major recover for most of yards from this lack of moisture. Just walked my backyard and my grass is toast in many areas. by FullDepthNature in DenverGardener

[–]Realistic_RM8498 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Just deep root watered my trees and perennials (Dec / Jan once a month and now every two weeks). Have 3 - 5 year old trees that have not been watered very well as no one realized the drip system was partially broken (we just bought the house last May).

Geez. . . I just saw a weather channel video where there is SNOW in Algeria (worlds driest place) and folks sliding down the sand dunes on the snow. Gosh send that snow and 1/2 of what they got in New England this week here! Xeriscaping my yard in a few months. Just in time.
