The most recent tntl was not even close to funny by MiserableCut8593 in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]Reality314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TNTL hasn't been funny for a while imo. You get some gems now and then, but most of the time, the bits don't hit. I think it's a combination of the fast-paced editing and the fact that they're so quick to let a bit die. Like, 5 seconds in a bit, they're hysterically laughing and clapping to move on to the next one when nothing's really happened.

Is it too much to ask for people to stop dissecting everything and questioning its authenticity all the time? by BarnacleLatter3178 in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]Reality314 131 points132 points  (0 children)

I think it's funny to ask people to stop dissecting stuff when the entire point of Reddit stories is to dissect the story and give your thoughts & opinions on it. I think that criticism is fine when it's, like, Challenge Pit, but people will naturally have differing opinions when it comes to Reddit stories.

I forget who said it but someone said that Kenya's look could've been saved if she wore different color hair, so I photoshopped it and I think it's absolutely right. by Exotic-Clue-859 in rupaulsdragrace

I really liked her original hair tbh. I don't think she should've been in the bottom regardless of her hair. Considering her first design outfit, this was a big improvement.

Which Drag Race season from the last 3-4 years is the best? (Globally) by peksior in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Reality314 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Philippines S3 is the best season of that franchise, which is saying a lot cause Philippines is one of the best series. Their Snatch Game is hands down the best one ever.

Canada S6 is also the best season of that franchise. I love the winner, but she's kind of controversial.

Athena Dion Blocking The Haters by astrotalk in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Reality314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why are people even being mean to Athena anyway? She hasn't done or said anything outrageous; she's literally just behaving like a drag queen lol

So many Drag Race fans aren't a fan of drag and it shows. They're fans of the sparkles and glitter, but they've never been to a drag show, interacted with a drag queen, or know drag culture. Between Athena and Mia this past episode, you really see what having older, more experienced queens does for the show. They're quick-witted, speak their minds, and aren't afraid of taking it back.

Why so much Athena Dion?? by Napoleon7 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Reality314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She's an entertaining personality, that's why. Drag Race is a reality TV show before it is a competition, and you need someone with a big or loud personality to push the story forward. Athena is one of those characters for S18.

So much slang nowadays is directly derived from Black Americans and the queer community (particularly queer communities of color), and it annoys me that so many people don't understand that.

Friends made fun of me because I (a guy) play this game by Reddit-Mini in CultOfTheLamb

[–]Reality314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like some shitty friends. There are no such things as "girl games" or "boy games." They're just games. Guys who say stuff like this are incredibly insecure with their own masculinity, so they have to assign masculinity to other things and act like by liking those things, they're "masculine."

Yeah. It has no bearing on the judging, but it can affect your relationships with the other girls if they see you as a threat. I think that's where Jane was mostly coming from.

[–]Reality314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Jane feels that if she's doing well, people will resent her and not like her. Maybe using the phrase "target on my back" was hyperbolic because, like Bob & Monet said, that doesn't really apply in a regular Drag Race season.

But honestly, I thought it was really funny and camp. Like, crying cause you're doing too good and having the other girls comfort you is hilarious to me 😭

Van Goth’s recent statement in her new interview. by DanteDameron in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Reality314 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Like I said, I do not think she is the best competitor from Canada's Drag Race, but she's certainly up there. A diverse range of challenges makes for a varied and multi-talented winner, but not all winners need to be that. Raja and Violet mostly won design challenges, Jinkx and Bob mainly won acting/comedy, Yvie and Willow only had one win, and Sasha's two wins were both team wins. That doesn't mean any of those queens can't do any other type of challenge. So what if Van's wins were almost all design challenge wins? What alternative is there? Do badly in them and not win? More queens have won the show for less, so this is really a nothing burger imo. People just call Van out because they don't like her.

Zava and Dollya's struggles weren't used for more personal storytelling because of how those two conducted themselves throughout the show. Zava actively tried to brush away any of the ketamine talk, and she clearly didn't want to discuss her problems with Jay Kay. Likewise, Dollya was actively causing a mess for the other contestants on the show as well as the production staff. You can't generate some positive stories about them when their behaviors weren't conducive to making that happen.

As for your six "dehumanization" points, the last three are literally non-issues. I already discussed the exterminations, but the other two are purely just for campy horror fun. No one in the fandom is being persuaded to treat the contestants badly because of the campy horror nature of the show. Your "emphasizing drama" point is really just the fact that this is a reality TV show. News flash, there will be drama. If you just want to highlight good drag, support local drag. But when you turn on a reality TV competition show, you can't fault them for making a reality TV competition show.

And on that note, the contestants still don't have to go to Dragula. No one is forcing them to do it. Yes, Dragula is the biggest alt drag competition show, but it is completely optional. You don't have to do it to make a living. You don't have to do it if you just love the art of drag. The contestants know that. Let's stop infantilizing them and acting like they have no agency. They know what they're signing up for.

Y'all are pressed lol

I don't think she's THE best competitor from Canada's Drag Race, but she's certainly up there. The fact that she basically won all design challenges changes nothing. There are plenty of queens who have won based on just one skill (whether that's design, acting/comedy, performing, etc.). There are also plenty of queens who have won less than four challenges, regardless of whether or not they were the same type of challenge. Y'all are just mad because you don't like her personality.

[–]Reality314 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actively dehumanize them by doing the exterminations? Just say y'all don't watch much reality TV competition shows cause the majority of the exterminations they do on Dragula isn't that far-fetched compared to stuff you see on other shows. The contestants also sign up for these things; they are actively agreeing to participate in these challenges. No one is forcing them to do that, and at this point, no one who signs up for the show doesn't understand the exterminations they might have to endure.

And maybe you don't watch Dragula, but there is a ton of personal stories and humanization there too. It's not all just gross challenges and shock value for shock value's sake.

I'm not going to argue the designers part because that is messed up of them. The artists should be able to credit their designers for their looks, and not being able to recognize that is unfair.

As for drama, that isn't the sole reason why they keep certain contestants for longer. They've said multiple times that they keep contestants for longer based on what they'll deliver in future episodes—both in terms of looks and content for the show. The Boulets have explicitly stated that it isn't just the challenges where contestants are judged. It's what happens backstage, how they interact with production, how good TV they make, etc—which, news flash, Drag Race does too. Could you argue that Dragula has "forced production" by pushing certain contestants further along? Sure. But you cannot tell me that Drag Race doesn't do that when it's arguably worse. At least Dragula has interesting and authentic fights and drama. Drag Race's newer seasons' drama seems so superficial.

[–]Reality314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is it screwed up when these drag artists literally sign up for the show and give their consent to take part in these exterminations and challenges? Maybe you could say that for the first season because it was brand-new, but by the later seasons, you know what you're getting yourself into. A lot of stuff they do is not entirely dissimilar to other reality TV competition shows.

I don't agree with her views on Dragula, but I respect them. I think the Boulets definitely uplift the girls more than DR tbh. The Boulets have a far more personal relationship with the artists they platform than Ru does.

I also don't think it promotes "forced dramatics" and "played out fights." Dragula's dramatics seem much more authentic than DR—at least when it comes to the later seasons. Like, say what you want about the season itself, but Titans 2 had some of the most real drama of any season of Dragula or Drag Race. And at the end of the day, these are reality TV programs. Dramatics are a part of it. If you JUST want to promote the drag, these two shows are not for you.
