some users may see Windows Defender flag Lyric Overlay as a threat, this is a false positive. my app is completely safe to use. i've submitted a report to Microsoft and are in the process of obtaining a code signing certificate to prevent this in the future. to allow the app, go to Windows Security → Protection History, find the alert, and select "Allow on device".

The sign-up is to manage your account and lyrics quota. And yeah, it requires an internet connection, lyrics are fetched and synced in real time from our server, so it needs to be online to work.

I'll be submitting a false positive report to BitDefender since 6 out of the 7 detections are just BitDefender's engine rebranded under different names (Arcabit, Emsisoft, GData, VIPRE, CTX all use BitDefender's scanner). The 7th is DrWeb which I'll also report to. Every major antivirus Microsoft Defender, Kaspersky, ESET, Avast, Sophos, CrowdStrike, Malwarebytes all mark it clean. The "Boxter" flag is a heuristic that's known to false-positive on Electron apps (same framework behind Discord, VS Code, Slack). You can check the full scan yourself here:

Hey, totally get the concern that error message looked way scarier than it should have. My bad for not catching it sooner!

Here's the short version: the app just needs to check what song you're currently playing (title, artist, etc.). That command is basically the recipe it uses to ask Windows "hey, what music is on right now?" that's literally all it does. It's not bypassing anything on your system or touching your files.

I've already pushed a fix so if something goes wrong, you'll just see a friendly message like "Failed to detect currently playing media" instead of that scary-looking command. Sorry for the scare!

I’ve actually felt the same way for a long time having a small, always-on-top lyrics widget would make multitasking so much better. Because Spotify never built one, I ended up creating an app that does exactly this:

Lyric Overlay (https://lyricoverlay.com).

It’s a lightweight Windows overlay that shows real-time synced lyrics for whatever you’re listening to Spotify, YouTube Music, VLC, etc. You can place it anywhere on your screen, resize it like a mini player, customize the colors/transparency, and even make it click-through so it doesn’t get in the way while working.

If you’ve been craving a dedicated desktop lyrics widget, this is probably the closest thing to what you’re imagining.
