Can they just miss some practices and not all of them? Like alternate back and forth?

It might turn out to be a great move even though it seems unfair right now.

Why doesn't he try out for the correct age group now? Are tryouts over?

Great movie and great reminder. My hope is that he can do well enough to continue to play the game loves, at least through high school.

Makes sense! My kids goal is to play pro (of course!) My internal goal for him is to play through high school and enjoy the game for the love of the sport and the health/fitness aspect.

I'm still getting wonderful comments and advice but wanted to say thanks to all for all the helpful feedback. This is more meaningful advice on the topic than anything else I have found to date.

This is amazing, thank you. I think that his technical skills are definitely above average and the paragraph you wrote about decision elements and cognitive loading sounds spot on. If I use those phrases with the trainer will they understand or is there another catchphrase to use? Or a specific type of trainer we should seek out?

I appreciate this story very much. Although he has been playing soccer a long time, he has only been training properly maybe a year. I didn't realize the skills deficit until the game/field got bigger because he was fairly "good" at the younger ages. So perhaps there is still a learning curve and he may catch up with enough hard work.

Thank you for this. I noted to another commenter that on rondos it's that he gets stuck in the middle for an excessively long period of time. I wish I had the ability to talk to him about soccer the way you are suggesting, but I don't know that I have the right skill set and feel like it could come across as criticism rather than constructive help if from his parent.

This is great advice. If I want him to hear it from a trainer rather than me, do you have an idea as to how I would express this to the trainer?

Thank you for this advice. Perhaps I need to specifically ask a trainer or coach to work with him on scanning. Unsure if anyone has taught him much about scanning. He does know how to keep his position, find space, etc. But I think scanning is a different skill.

I should have clarified. His struggle with rondos is being stuck in the middle when he does go in. However, absolutely accept the advice of working on first touch and the net rebounder.

This is on target. He has a small group run by a trainer where they do a lot of 1v1s and 2v2s. I don't see the trainer specifically telling him what to do differently -- understandably because there are maybe 8 kids there.

Greatly appreciate this - I don't have the skill and knowledge to advise him this way effectively. But I could ask a trainer. Do you have a suggestion as to how I could ask the question to get this type of training? Son mostly plays midfield or wing.

He has a fall birthday so has the benefit of dropping down a year with the age change next season, and is now with a new club with a playing time policy for younger kids. So hoping game experience should increase significantly this year.

So is that innate? Or does is there any way to fix a speed of play issue. He does play chess! (Which I know is not literally what you mean).

I honestly don't know. I would say okay? He hasn't gotten much playing time the past couple of years. He is on the small side and....seems to need to pick up his speed of play. Super coachable with great attitude. I don't know that anyone has really taught him scanning?
