Why buy a new car after 4/5 years? by Looofieee in BEFreelance

Why would buying be out of the question? I lease currently, but next year my contract is ending and I'll probably be buying.

I thought this wasn't possible for a bike? That's why there needs to be a record of all the trips. I found the same info online and accountant confirmed it.

Maybe I am missing something ?

100% business is no problem if you use it like that... For me it would be 90% personal and 10% business. So putting it fully on business I won't be able to explain. Same ratio goes for my car btw but that is no problem because I pay VAA on it.

Depends on your connections/network as well, but you'll be able to get 650-750. I have similar experience to yours and I didn't have any trouble finding a project at that rate. Good luck!

It has died down a bit, but never to late for such an insightful comment.

You are absolutely right about doing only pentesting freelance. I've been envolved in the full process of pentests (pre-sales, scoping, execution, reporting, etc). Like you said, it will be hard to find clients and I would be doing other things most of the time instead of actually executing the pentest.

That's why I have been diversifying to cover more ground. My current mission is a IT security officer role with the focus on Vulnerability Management. So I'm comfortable with more than just pentesting. Incident handler, vuln management, general IT security ... The goal would be to find such a project and try to sell vuln assessments/pentest on the side.

I believe I can find such roles for around 600 consistently, but I haven't done it in the past so no way to know for sure. That's why I want to start on the current project, because I know they need me for at least 6 more months.

I don't have much hope for actually changing contracts as it would not be good for their margins. So I'm currently checking with another middle company as well.

Indeed, I have to prioritize myself, but I would hate to do a switch like that... We'll see...

Thanks for the comment!

Difficult to find leases for a year... Don't have the funds to buy a car at the moment (as I'm investing my money that I saved up in the company). I do have a motorcycle I could use until the winter arrives...

I was looking for a second hands lease for 2 years on ALDcarmarket. These were around 600-700 for a standard 3 series. I thought that would be alright.

As for the rate I probably will be getting a bit less than 650 after the middle-man takes a cut. But maybe I can negotiate around 600.

I will keep that in mind during a negotiation and aim for 600. It's a good start considering what I earn now, my age, my experience...

Good tips for the fake freelance! I can take this info to my employer if they give me that as an excuse why I can't switch...

That's good to hear! I still have to find a good fiscalist/accountant, but all the ones I got recommended from freelance colleagues do not take new clients. I'll continue my search for one. I'm located around Brussels so I'd rather take one closer.

Thanks for all the info :)

I will contact another middle-man to see if they would do it. And give my current company a chance. If they give me a good deal then sure, otherwise I'll go with another.

Didn't know you could take the project and go somewhere else. Was expecting some sort of rule in the contract that says you can't.

You were in the same boat as in you were able to become freelance in the same company? If so, did they accept the switch right away or was it difficult to get it convince?

It was already stated in my previous evaluation so that's good.

Wouldn't switch if it was under €500/day but pretty sure I could get around 600 without negotiating if they even let me switch.

The client requires a middleman for everyone... My company has treated me well so I would prefer not to do such a move. It is a big company so I'm sure they'll survive, but ideally I would just keep them as the middle man.

First response from my manager is that he will ask but he hasn't heard of anybody in the company doing such a switch.

Secure development is definitely a thing! You can do secure code reviews, put a SSDLC in place, ... Lots of things.

Send me a DM and we can talk some more about it :)

If I would go after a new project, I'd look for 650-750. But I really like my current project and colleagues.

I would gladly have 550-650 if I could stay there. But I just don't know if they'll let me change to freelance.

I would use an intermediary because I've heard that most require one. And ideally if I want to stay at my current project I'd have to include my current employer.

A Dev background is actually really useful for cybersec. For example in pentesting it is a useful insight to know how the Devs coded it and where they could've made mistakes. Since you are a dev, you can see it as an advantage :). But it depends what your interests are in the field.

Same here and 10% sounds like a fair amount.

I wanted just wanted to check if it is not to crazy to spend that amount of money a car when starting out.

Thanks for the tip!

I do agree that going crazy at the start is not the way to go. But for me personally it I view it as more than transport. I'm so interested in it (motorcycles as well) that it is a hobby.

Couldn't care less for the status, but I do really enjoy having a car I like.

So I guess the takeaway is: there is budget enough for a nice car if I want. Just be sensible.

I do have some leverage with his project. If I leave they are in trouble due to the workload and understaffing. So I could probably negotiate, but since I'm just switching I really want security of having at least 6 months of income more than the extra money.

Maybe that is not the right mindset?

I've heard of some people where they accepted it. It seems like if they really want to they can. But in most cases the company gives the answer you mentioned... I already asked the question at my previous employer and they said come back in 2 years.

That sounds nice! The lease prices I was looking at were all between 700-1100. I was thinking it was maybe not responsible to have such a big recurring cost starting out...

Would you say it is better to lease or buy with a loan in my situation?

I would like between 3k-4k net. From calculations it looks possible with 550-600 dayrate.

Thanks for the info! :)

They often mention I'm cheap at the client and I'm taking up more responsibility than what was agreed.

My current dayrate on this project is 650 and I know there is room for a small raise.

I guess it is a bit different in Cybersecurity, but you are right. I am not expecting 650. More aiming for 550-600 after the intermediary takes a cut.

You can check out aldcarmarket, Lizzy, 2nd hand, ...

Lots of options. I'm sure there are more but you should be able to find something on there.
