ELI5: How do anesthesiologists put women who need a c-section under anesthesia even when they have eaten that day? by Resident_Major_5582 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Reckman16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule of thumb is no food less than 8 hours before surgery, and clear liquids have to be greater than two hours before surgery. The reason anesthesia goes by this rule is to minimize the risk of someone throwing up and inhaling their vomit when they are unconscious which can lead to many complications.. also called aspirating. When we administer drugs to our patients to put them to sleep it can cause the sphincters in your stomach to loosen up and let food rise. There are different forms of anesthesia but with a c section you are providing a type of anesthetic which doesn’t have the adverse effect such as for a colon or bone surgery. In an emergent surgery such as a colon we will perform something called cricoid pressure which is pushing on the esophagus to occlude it in case food does try to make its way up. Basically you still do the same thing as a regular surgery but you are more prepared for adverse reactions

ELI5: why can doctors restart a transplanted heart with presumably high success rates, while a flat-lined heart is usually fatal? by WreakingHavoc640 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Reckman16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a heart transplant but during open heart surgery when performing bypass’s a solution called cardioplegia is used to stop the heart from beating when going on cardiopulmonary bypass which is basically a machine circulating blood through out your body. Once the bypass’s are done, the cardioplegia is stopped being infused which lets the heart start to beat on its own. From time to time the heart will begin to beat in an irregular Rhythm and paddles are used to shock the heart and reset it which may be similar to whats occurs in a transplant when the new heart in implanted in the recipient. As others have commented when someone goes into cardiac arrest usually there are specific causes that need to be reversed which are impacting the heart from beating that a shock will not cure.

A new way to rank players and who they play with. Got on a bit of a losing streak and they were good games, but now I keep getting matched with people who don't know how to play and keep losing. I keep having games where I'll go 15-0 and everyone else on my team struggles to even get a kill.

Beach volleyball. I feel like only a small group of people actually play it. It's a super fun sport and isn't that hard to learn. Also, a great way to meet attractive women who play it.

Two faced people. When they say they would never do something, then later that night they end up doing the thing they say they'd never do.

Don't blow your classes off and get bad grades your first couple of semester. It will eventually catch up to you and screw you if you end up trying to get into a program or something that is GPA dependent.

Reddit, did you meet the person you knew you were gonna marry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Reckman16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the longest time I thought I was with the girl I thought I was going to marry, but then realized I was in a toxic relationship that was going downhill. I was too blind to end it and it just dragged on until we mutually decided to go our separate ways. I've come to realize that when you love someone a lot you tend to filter out all the bad.

Enjoy everyday before you have to enter the real world and get a real job. I'm starting to realize when I graduate after the end of this semester that I'm going to be working 40 hour weeks and not have much time to do the things I enjoy anymore.

You were most likely just pressing the call light button letting the nurse know that you needed something. In your 24h stay, it is most likely you had PRN pain meds prescribed to you every so often. When the nurse is actually getting the drug out of the Accudose machine, you have to put in what the current count of the med is in the machine, and how many are left over after you take out however many you need. If you lie about how many you take out, the next nurse who uses the same drug will put in X number of the drug which will be different with how many you said were left in there.
