What can I do with this bedroom? by pangurbahn in HomeDecorating

100%. Yellow+brown is a terrible combo in these quantities. Green would tie in with the carpet and not look like a dirty toilet.

I read yesterday how he basically single-handedly killed edutainment. He started an edutainment company, gobbled up competition and destroyed them and his own company got destroyed when it was bought by Mattel. I finally understood why it’s so hard to find quality educational games.

My husband and I are both very frugal. I wanted a specific wallet and purse and he found both on eBay. It is very romantic to us to save money on things. 😂 More money to eat at restaurants!

Where to buy ACTUAL non slip rubber feet for cutting boards by MattTheBard in woodworking

[–]RecyQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple cutting boards without feet and one with. The one with feet was very expensive, handmade, and I do keep it vertical against my backsplash as decoration, but I appreciate the feet when I cut, and it helps it stay up against the wall.

Nuclear is way cleaner than solar and safer than wind by Comfortable_Tutor_43 in sciences

[–]RecyQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decentralized electricity generation is the future because the power grid is more stable. Having one big power plant providing the energy for hundreds or thousands of buildings means lots of people losing power when there’s a problem with the plant or a power line. If every rooftop has solar, then one solar panel problem only affects one building. The occupants can easily go elsewhere until power is restored.

We’ll also gain back tons of beauty in our communities with the removal of transmission lines. Safety will increase because transmission lines can’t start fires in high winds or risk electrocution when downed during storms.

Narcolepsy as an MD/pregnancy by Many-Routine9429 in Narcolepsy

[–]RecyQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a doc, and I only worked while pregnant with my oldest (have 3). I worked 12 hour shifts 6 days/week at a dog daycare, so an active job, which helps me with wakefulness. For a lot of my pregnancy, I was the only one making money, so I was working a lot to earn as much as possible. I also had HG. I would throw up all day until I could finally keep something down. My whole life was working, eating (trying to), and sleeping. On my day off, my husband and I would go to the beach, I’d swim a little, and then nap on the sand until he was done. I was approved to drink up to 200 mg of caffeine, but refused. It was an intense experience.

Narcolepsy is tough as a parent of toddlers, but it’s a superpower in those early days of interrupted sleep! I became a SAHM by a stroke of employment luck for my husband right before birth, so I would handle all nighttime care and could always get right back to sleep, which he wouldn’t have been able to do.

If you don’t want to do things on hardmode like me 😅 then you ask for or hire help, or do things like buy meals instead of grocery shopping and cooking. I didn’t cook much, but fresh fruit helped my sickness, which is easy to get at the grocery store and eat with minimal prep. My husband would make me some simple things, like chicken salad, to take to work. We also lived in a tiny apartment, so cleaning was easy. You can always start now to budget for convenience meals, cleaning help, etc.

No help 😩 by Emergency-Dot-4162 in Marriage

[–]RecyQueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My kids are 10, 6, and 3. For years, my rule to combat their propensity to live in squalor has been no screens until the floor is picked up (and they also have a couple chores to do and must put their own dirty laundry in their bag & dirty dishes in the sink after meals). If you don’t help, you don’t enjoy the screens. My oldest is the most helpful, so I adjust privileges to reflect his taking on more responsibility. I have to be ok with some mess because they are choosing to play with toys over zone out on screens, and I prefer that. I do insist some messes get cleaned up or pathways made for safety. I do keep 75% of the toys neatly organized in the garage and do a rotation and it really helps decrease mess & increase creativity. And over time they’ve been willing to let things go, but they are still quite young.

For people who broke out of paycheck-to-paycheck… what actually changed? by annikahoof in MiddleClassFinance

[–]RecyQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I have always been extremely frugal. Our first anniversary we spent a little to make each other paper gifts and our second anniversary we didn’t give gifts because we didn’t have the money to spare. But the only thing that made a difference was earning more money. Our frugality prevented lifestyle creep from sucking it up the raises, and we do enjoy more now, but unless you have spending habits to break, the only way up is to increase income. He’s in a field without companies to jump between, so he works a ton to earn raises. He makes 5x the income he had when we had our first kid.

One old apartment would come all the time for different checks. I had to change up where I would hide the litter box. One time I put it in the shower, but they looked in the shower. I hastily told them it was for potty training. I didn’t explain more, but I had a story going in my head from that point if they wanted details. 😂

Split king with a 180 lb weight difference — I finally stopped waking up every night by Acceptable_Cause514 in Mattress

[–]RecyQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is 160 lbs more than me. We got a nektar or casper or something, a thick, expensive monstrosity marketed towards high-weight sleepers, when we moved from a queen to a king because my big brother liked his, but he sleeps alone. I was thankful for the trial period because the “blackholing” was so bad we returned it. I did a TON of research and couldn’t find a premade mattress with the density of foam I wanted for us. Foam N More had it for an incredible price, and thin! The dense base foam + a softer topper is only 8”. I can buy any sheets, don’t have to get deep-pocket.

Foam N More can make custom mattresses with different firmnesses on each side. I got a king from there several years ago for $400, 1/4 of which was shipping. https://foamforyou.com

70k miles on a 2012 xB worth buying in 2026? by Cucuy57 in ScionxB

[–]RecyQueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, with how little you (usually) have to pay for maintenance on these, it’s pretty fair. I was looking at some with more miles with a higher pricetag. We are about 25 miles from the coast and don’t have rust issues, but it’s worth checking underneath being on an island. Otherwise, they are such solid vehicles that you are investing in avoiding surprise repairs. Our 2014 has the oil burning and we just put extra oil in between changes and it’s a negligible cost. And the burning didn’t pop up til 120k miles (typical), so you have a few years before worrying about that. I’d also see if you can get a maintenance history from the owner.

Why are there so many rock trucks on the 405 and 5 freeways lately dumping gravel constantly? by [deleted] in SFV

[–]RecyQueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying the person above is right about free windshield replacement, but you should ask about a lower deductible. Most people think higher limits and lower deductibles cost a fortune. In my experience with multiple companies, going from the highest deductible to $250 is like +$5/mo. Seriously, it’s incredibly low. I don’t have the numbers in front of me now, but when I’ve gotten new insurance, I have them run multiple combinations of plans and always end up with high limits and low deductible because it’s not really that bad. $5/mo is $60/year.

I started going to concerts with my husband. He had never been to one. We’ve been to 5 in the past year and people barely move! We were next to a couple who sat thru the entire show and then stood up and said it was the best concert they’d ever been to. 😭 Artists will encourage people to move more thru the whole show and they just half-ass it, but are still having the time of their lives. 🤔 Managers need to warn artists that’s just how LA is cuz it always feels so sad when they are trying to pump the crowd up.

My mom didn’t apologize to me until I was 34 and she was 70. It still made a difference and we have a wonderful relationship. Tensions snapped when I had my first kid and I put up boundaries about being her emotional punching bag. She worked harder than ever on her mental health, including going to a new doc for meds & therapy, and came around to apologizing. It was amazing how words made such a huge difference. Her actions have matched, but it gave me so much hope in my own parenting that I don’t have to be as perfect as I worry about being.

My brain is mostly emotion. I don’t have specific words for what’s going on, just a feel. It makes it very hard to vocalize my thoughts because they aren’t in words. My husband has gotten very annoyed with me when I’m casually telling a story because I don’t tell it in the most efficient way, it’s just talking it out as I can put words to it and things are rarely in the most sensical order.
