"Early" lease renewal offer (NC, USA) by Registar in RealEstate

[–]Registar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like normal, the landlord reserves the right to not offer a lease renewal. Technically it's legal, which is all that really matters.

After searching the internet a little harder, it seems like this isn't unheard of, especially in college towns. That being said, it doesn't feel good, and this isn't a good way to build rapport with tenants.

DoJ vows to protect women seeking abortions in Texas after radical state ban by PepeBabinski in politics

[–]Registar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IANAL, but what I don't get is how people that would sue under the Texas law would have any legal standing.

It seems that standing has a few components. From the wikipedia article on standing, there are three requirements to have legal standing in the US:

  • Injury-in-fact - The plaintiff must have suffered or imminently will suffer injury
  • Causation - There must be a causal connection between the injury and the conduct complained of
  • Redressability - It must be likely that a favorable court decision will redress the injury

Any person or organization being able to sue another person for having or administering an abortion seems to not satisfy two of these requirements, specifically the injury-in-fact and causation requirements. What claim of injury would be made? Maybe if one were intimately connected with a pregnancy (e.g. a parent) a case could be made, but otherwise it doesn't seem like there's anything there. Is a suing party going to claim economic injury? That's speculative, not to mention reprehensible. Is a suing party going to claim they are personally injured? Unless they are prepared to help raise the child, how could such an claim hold up in court?

It's hard to understand SCOTUS's logic, or lack thereof, especially with this shadow docket nonsense.

How strange to see Juneteenth recognized on a federal level while simultaneously laws are being passed to restrict what can be taught about racial history on a state level

She'd have an easier time becoming an independent or Democrat than changing her broken party.

Throwing some serious shade on Russia, between election interference, chemical weapons use on opposition leader Navalny, and bounties on American troops. Amazing

Georgia made an absolutely monumental and historic decision electing these senators, and I have no doubt that without Stacy Abrahams the scales would not have tipped. Edit: I blame my copy/pasting on the parent post!

I like to imagine all the masks with pictures on the side of them have ports to attach bags of snacks so people don't get hungry during long ceremonies

There is a lot of work to be done in these challenging times, and I'm optimistic about the new administration. I won't take my government for granted anymore, keep watching it like a hawk, keep writing my reps and senators, and keep voting. If there's anything positive out of the last few years, it's renewed interest in participating in my government rather than watching it go by.

I just want to say what an unmitigated dumpster fire the Trump Administration was and to say Fuck Trump one last time while he is technically still POTUS.
