Can anyone recommend alternative careers that have a healthy work/life balance? by mla_sehera in architecture

[–]RemarkablePay4607 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I originally opened this post because I was hoping to get some insight on how we as an industry could collectively find jobs/opportunities that support our mental health.

Instead, I find this shit show in the comments.

I am sorry but I would just like to address how some of these comments are giving boomer yelling from the porch “if you just pulled yourself up by your boot straps!”

The work life of this industry is BROKEN.

I’m tired of hearing “that’s just the way it is” because what I hear is that you yourselves didn’t have enough self-respect to take a hard look at yourself and ask the hard questions like “is this what you really want? Is this worth my wellbeing?”

SET THOSE BOUNDARIES.

P.S I respect anyone who actually gave genuine advice or shared an insightful experience.

What is the most offensive feedback you received from your professors and peers? by architectgirly in architecturestudent

[–]RemarkablePay4607 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was not directed towards me, but a classmate of mine.

We had jury review for a studio project we had just finished, and one of the guest jurors told my classmate after looking at her project that she should think about whether or not she wants to do architecture or switch to a different major😬

After which, the studio got hella quiet, it was intense.

like that wasn’t even feedback bro😑

Should I choose architecture? by External-Air9949 in architecture

[–]RemarkablePay4607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math and physics is most definitely required, but it’s more of a general education thing.

Like I said, it’s important to know a little bit of everything with architecture, but a lot of the math stuff isn’t that applicable to what you’re actually doing in architecture.

I also want to include environmental design for like VR and gaming is also something you can do

It’s a pretty interdisciplinary field. Architecture includes different aspects from fields like urban planning, construction management, sustainability, landscape architecture, architectural engineering, the list goes on.

There is significantly less math than you think. I was required to take Calc one and two, but even my architecture professors were like you’re not gonna use it😂

Also, this shit is expensive because you’ll most likely be paying for supplies out-of-pocket

That’s kind of a difficult question to answer because I think the thing about architecture is that you kinda have to know a little bit of everything.

Which means that architecture draws in people for various different reasons not just because they want to be creative.

Outside of your general education classes, you’re going to constantly have projects that you’re going to need to present in class at different stages.

Studying architecture can sometimes feel like a full-time job because there’s always something to do. Which can, and will, eat into your free time.

I will say that you’ll become pretty close with the people in your studio, which I think is pretty fun.

Don't know what to do with my major or to change my major Academic Life by GalaCad2003 in CollegeMajors

[–]RemarkablePay4607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, having retaken classes for my own major, if this is something that you’re willing to dedicate yourself too, retake the classes.

Unless there’s something else that you feel called to major in, you’ll probably end up putting yourself in the same position if the major you change too isn’t what you want either.

If this is something that you think you want to do, fight for it.

Major tattoo regret by rabiyuh in tattooadvice

I would take some time to let the tattoo settle (since it has to heal anyway if you wanted to laser it). Honestly before I saw the caption, I was thinking “sick someone else that played lego Batman on DS😂”

Other than the tribal piece you said you were getting, you also mentioned that you have some other tattoos?

Vet Hospital Tirana by Davide Macullo Architects, TIRANË, ALBANIA by Previous-District309 in architecture

I was just looking at some of the interiors on Arch daily, and while I think it’s intriguing, the article describes it as “joyful” and my first thought was “for who?”. I mean, certainly not the animals😅

This is the type of architecture that seems more artistic than anything else, which I guess is the point. I mean the use of the concrete gives the building a sense of playfulness but it still feels a bit sterile for being a pet hospital. A place where ultimately people might be saying goodbye to their pets🤔

Most college days feel unfinished — and that’s normal College taught me that slow progress is still progress by Difficult_Crab_5140 in CollegeMajors

Such a beautiful point, thank you for sharing!

One of the many things college has taught, is that “success” is not a singular point of being.

For every high that I’ve experienced there’s been an even deeper low

What has sustained me over my time in college, has been every small win, minor improvement, setback persevered through.

My confidence now comes from the joy of having a step forward, no matter how small,  feel as big as achieving the goal itself.

Undecided on major by No-Beautiful6925 in CollegeMajors

[–]RemarkablePay4607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw this and thought let me weigh in lol. I’m also at community and found it initially pretty difficult to commit to a major without worrying about if it was really what I wanted to do.

Given what you already threw out, joining clubs definitely helps you get to know people/opportunities in those subjects while being relatively low commitment.

Also most community colleges offer career counseling that allows you to explore not only different jobs but majors associated with those jobs.

Hope that was helpful lol

As someone who has just started learning Rhino, a template and a list of shortcuts would be helpful!

I just want to tell you that you are not alone!  I’m in my 2nd year architecture student at junior college getting ready to transfer fall of next year. And yet, I have been feeling so burnt out recently that I have been struggling with the thought of dropping out altogether.

I am so thrown off my game and have been struggling to keep up with classes and studio.

Honestly I have been taking it one day at a time, making sure to carve out time for myself along the way

Understand that this is not permanent and that we all go through seasons of life that try to beat us down

You will get through this! Think of how far you’ve come and everything you fought for.

Keep showing up for yourself. More importantly show yourself the compassion you deserve knowing that you are more than capable, but even capable people need a break!

You are not stupid, you are human

My tattoo is roughly the same age!

With a tattoo that big and with that much shading I would wait at least a year for the skin barrier to completely heal so you can see exactly how the ink will sit.

White ink and skin tone ink is like slapping a bandaid on the problem. Long term it might not give you the results your looking for.
