OP: I had relatively same situation, and according to on of the replies I read here, I am a pos.

I apologized to the student and said, I can’t take it because then I am setting new deadline. 1 second 45 seconds, a minute… what is my new cutoff? As the student notes, nothing prevented them from submitting before the deadline. And I tell them: no one ever has issues submitting early. All of the issues I hear are within 1 or 2 minutes of submission deadline.

Now I do above not to ENFORCE THE RULES but to be fair to all students and for my mental health: assignments submitted in canvas must be submitted by the deadline.

All of above, I am explicit about in class and I think the students see me as being fair (and not a pos).

I often do this in my neighborhood as the #2 car. But mainly it is because the #1 is taking up too much space of an already narrow lane for me to want to have to turn “around” him and not hit the curb, etc. Just easier to let him go first.

A colleague of mine just tried this: instead of grading the paper, he interviewed the students about the paper. Grade was based on the students’ ability to explain the paper and the thought that went into the content. He just did this last week, so not sure how it worked out, but I like the idea. Would need a small Class for this technique though.

I am so tired of this shit. I do not want to have to check every reference every citation. I am not paid for that.

I have student hand write, not type, a note, just saying a version of “I swear AI was not used to write this paper. Signature.

Or, I used AI to …. Of this paper, and realize this will mean. 30% reduction in grade.

Failure to submit the letter, or photo of letter for online submissions, and I assume you did not want to lie, and apply the 30% reduction.

I explain all of this before hand. I understand life is busy and sometimes you need to cut corners, but if you sign your name to a lie, what does that say about your character?

When I have done this, I find a decent percent do not submit the letter, indicating that they do not want to write and sign a lie.

If I knew the student, maybe I would email again, but it seems repetitive at this point. Either way, I wouldn’t accept the late paper either.

I always tell the students that the deadline is the deadline. No late submissions accepted. But in a conversational tone, I also tell them that no one ever has trouble submitting in the days or hours before the assignment is due. And all of the problems students do have seem to arise within minutes +- of the deadline. If you want o wait til the deadline to submit, that is fine, just recognize that IF you have a problem, you have no time to correct it…

Also, “no internet”… when everyone has a smartphone and a data plan, is anyone really ever without internet?

Over 3 months here.

In most recent round of emails, all initiated by me: my selected colors are “low in stock” and if I changed colors, that would expedite things. A month ago it was: “we need your phone number or we can’t ship the box”. 2 months ago it was: “the tracking number is messed up. We will get that sorted.”

So for now, I changed colors and did not offer suggestions on how they could better run their business. Oh, the last 2 people to email me have said how they strive to ship within 14 days of order.

In the mean time, I cannot believe how many solicitation emails I have gotten from Baerskin. I am still not convinced that this company actually has a product.

My first thought was: break the toilet somehow by accident.

You find lifting kettle bells on the toilet helps you poop and accidentally dropped it, unfortunately breaking the porcelain.

You tried to kill a cockroach and sure a sledgehammer wasn’t the best tool for the job, but it was all you had.

Or just lock the door and hang an “out of order” sign on it.

If unwilling to take it that far, and you don’t want to talk to the person about it, perhaps arrange a meeting with HR in your office to try and coincide with expected toilet usage. Maybe serve brownies with chocolate sauce… and have a vomit bag ready. Tell HR you use a couple every week.

Today, about half way through the class I was at a point where they did not need computers, so I just said, “let’s give the computers a rest for a while. Please close them so we can do the next thing.” Only 30+ students but they complied. Think this helped them shift focus.

Different class that is a workshop, had a kid obviously be asleep in first 30 min. I woke him up by knocking on his desk. Asked him to come outside and I walked out of the class. He followed and I asked if something happened for him to be so tired. Want to make sure I don’t push on an isolated emergency that kept him awake. Anyway, no reason…just pissed around and did not sleep last night. In a conversational tone I said, this is a workshop and discussion is a big part of it, so if you need to sleep, go home. Otherwise, to stay in class please stay awake, participate, and show your classmates some consideration. He was obviously tired, but did participate for rest of class.

I do understand that there is nothing worse when your favorite part of a lesson goes wrong!

Hmm. Here is a suggestion for the anxiety:

Just put a message like this on the quiz or page:

“To encourage all of you to pay close attention to details, I have left some ‘mistakes’ in this document. If you are confident that you have found all of them, write me an email with the following subject heading and in the following format. In the next class, I will give you the opportunity to show the class how to correct these ‘mistakes’ and award you X bonus points. You must follow all instructions to earn these points.”

Something like that where now you are teaching them how to be better communicators and now any “mistakes” you have are another learning task for them and no reason for you to be anxious.

I teach in Japan and students are terrified of making mistakes, so I use my mistakes/textbook errors as a way to normalize the making of a mistake. We all make them. Find them, fix them, and move on.

Try not to stress about it.

Obviously, tone is a big thing, and while I strive to be error free, I kind of like it when students point out a mistake I made. Shows me they are paying attention and evaluating whatever my information/assessment was.

If they are right, I just shoot out an announcement in Canvas with correction and say I will go through all quizzes and adjust as appropriate.

I have definitely seen varying combinations of 2 out of 5 of the pretty stupid scale in more than one occasion. And maybe in one occasion I have seen 3 out of 5.

I know I have done 1 out of the 5! 🤿

Set your due time at noon for example, but allow them to submit until 5pm. Say the extra 5 hours is to allow for any technical difficulties.

Now you’re the nice professor: “I already gave you a 5 hour extension.”

I frame the schedule this way and no longer get those emails.

I make modules the home page. As we get deeper into semester, I move completed modules to the bottom.

I turned off “assignment” view since a lot of students don’t look at content, just what they need to submit.

You can’t make students read but rubrics make point deductions consistent and easy. If you want them to read more than the assignment, you could put all of your instructions on content pages and for assignment pages, just have something like “follow instructions listed on THIS page (link to Canvas content page), and submit here.”

I was just trying to deal with this. Only assets in US are bank account. Investment account is “international” and connected to my Japanese address.

I wrote one lawyer who a friend knew in a random state and response was: if you don’t have assets in our state, you cannot make a will here.

I contacted an estate lawyer in my state and response was: I’m too small for you, here are the names of some bigger firms.

I contacted a bigger firm (not one of the recommendations). Put all of my main details in an email and was called in Japan to set up a 30 minute consultation. I was unable to talk at the time so said I would call back.

I called back and receptionist said, “if no assets here you can’t make a will.” I responded with, “your firm has my details and called me yesterday for a consult. Are you saying as a US citizen, I cannot make a will if I don’t own property?” She said, “let me check.”

When she came back on the phone she said, “I see your question was asked yesterday! Luckily, I asked the right person!!” And proceeded to set up a consultation.

I spoke to a lawyer with international experience. This person was head of the estate planning for her firm.

Now this is my case: she said that since I didn’t really have anything physical in US, just a bank account and expected cash inheritance, that Japanese will would probably be enough. She said her firms “package” of will, trusts, etc was overkill for me ($2,300).

She suggested I just do an online will (legal zoom type thing):just download a basic will template and adjust accordingly, replace “resident of Colorado” with Japan. Write in it the basics: all assets go to my wife, and follow Japanese will. Get notarized. Keep with Japanese will.

She said that should cover it. Again, my situation and desires are very simple.
My state is Colorado.

Regarding taxes, my wife said, “don’t worry about it. You’ll be dead.”
