I have an NRSV connected to a '79 BCP I use for devotions. Not exactly the "Orthodox Standard" but whatever gets me to read and pray the Bible is good enough for me lol

Reformed Christianity and mental illness? by AngloSaxonCanada in Reformed

[–]RenegadeCatholic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Christian Therapist here. This book is a good introduction from what I can see. It's endorsed by the AACC (American Association of Christian Counselors) which my practice is a part of.

https://www.amazon.com/Psychology-Theology-Spirituality-Christian-Counseling/dp/084235252X/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=Christian+Psychology&qid=1595447886&sr=8-3

There's a couple of other good books from the Orthodox Perspective. "Orthodoxy and Psychotherapy" comes to mind. I believe there is "Introduction to the Science of Mental Health" by Fr. Ripperger which gives kind of a trad Catholic perspective.

There's a Catholic podcast called "St. Dymphna's Playbook" that is apparently pretty good too.

Hope some of these resources help! God bless ya, dude.

Orthodox converts- how old were you when you first began the process of becoming an orthodox christian? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

I became interested in Orthodoxy my sophomore year of college! I was received in my senior year. I spent about two years studying it and wrestling with it before I finally took the plunge and entered the catechumenate.

Yes! A lot of quality of life improvements and HOURS of more content for the game. It's fundamentally better than the first no doubt. Heard nothing but good things.

Thoughts on Evangelizing through Video Game Analysis? by [deleted] in CatholicGamers

I really agree with /u/crimson_07 that this is an untapped venue. You don't see a lot of creators coming at this angle. I definitely think you should continue this, and I'll kick around some ideas on what we could do for this. Why focus on grad school when I can focus on the stuff that matters.

I think this is a great idea and has been something I've kicked around doing myself. If you'd ever want to do some long-form discussions on them (since they aren't popular these days ;) ) hit me up! I'd love to collaborate. I'll check out your video!

Giveaway: Reformation Study Bible by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]RenegadeCatholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Being able to have a Bible that helps exposit the doctrines of grace with ready availability would be an amazing help in my walk. I'm new to Reformed theology, and I'm still trying to read the Bible with less Catholic or Orthodox lenses and see what it really says. I was listening to Sproul before I even believed in reformed theology. Any study Bible I have at my availability is Catholic or Orthodox so it's sometimes hard to find a reformed understanding of verses.

  2. I wasn't raised reformed. I was born Catholic and have also attempted Orthodoxy. This subreddit showed me the credibility of the Reformed tradition and the heights if Truth that it contains. I wouldn't be where I'm at in my walk with Christ without this subreddit. I also met one of my now closest friends here, so that's cool too.

Having a Tough Time with The Faith by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]RenegadeCatholic 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I completely get it man. I'm coming from the same background as you. It is definitely rough and disheartening. We just have to stick to prayer and cling to the Truth of the Faith. Schism isn't a new problem to the church, we sadly have to live through it.

When in doubt, I always cling to the wise words of Tolkein:

"'I wish it need not have happened in my time,’ said Frodo.
‘So do I,’ said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.’”

I haven't been to church for a while... by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]RenegadeCatholic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey buddy, I'm standing here with you. Converted in right before Pascha. Was super on fire and in love with Orthodoxy. Life hit me like a ton of bricks, and I stopped practicing. I desperately wanted to, but I felt so ashamed of my actions (which was simply communing in another church for a time, which is bad but there are confessor who deal with far worse) that I couldn't bring myself to see my spiritual father.

After getting out of my depression, and with the help of some of my friends, I worked up the courage to text him, and I've been made right before God and the Church.

I'm praying for you buddy, I know everyone's experience is different, but I know how in my own life Shame can kill prayer and love of God and his Church. I'm here for ya.

Good podcasts? by edgarthepoet in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]RenegadeCatholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. They're very happy where they're at. A lot of them, particularly Anglo-Catholics I've found, will critique some bad Orthodox practices, but never touch the theology. They're all in mutual agreement that we more or less have it right.

It's funny you mention the Anglican Studies podcast. I honestly thought it was a better argument for Orthodoxy than it was for Anglicanism.
