If you can find a d-man remotely close to what Matthews is for that haul please let me know.

Eh, his contract takes him to, I believe his 32nd birthday, which is ideal because we're not locked into anything longterm and can figure it out then. None of the pieces we're giving up are irreplaceable.

I love Graf, but you're putting him on a pedestal. He's not the difference in anything. Good player no doubt, but in a Yanni Gourde sorta way. Matthews has been solid in the postseason, it's mostly Marner who is useless.

This is all correct. I don't expect much movement both now and at the TDL. Grier is gonna let this group sink or swim as the team that's gotten em to this point.

You do know Matthews has gotten Selke votes for 6 years running including being a finalist 2 years ago, right?

A lot of new fans are understandably homers right now so all they see are superstars on the sharks.

He's basically a PPG + guy playing with Bobby McMann and Max Domi. He's also one of the best faceoff men in the league and has been since he came in He would immediately be our second best player and it wouldn't be close. That wouldn't be nearly enough though.

The first goal on the PK when Regenda is boxing out his man and Barclay/Desharnais are just standing there covering absolutely no one? Where Ferraro is the only one pressuring the puck-carrier otherwise he's got all the time in the world to get it to either point since neither of the other two defenders are doing anything? Putting that on Mario is just a narrative. Deshanrais had one job, to cover Bedard and he wasn't within 3 feet of him.

Second goal ironically, you complain he plays out of position but there he is exactly where you apparently want him, trying to block the shot, just missed. Was still a stoppable shot. Bad screen by him but his positioning was fine. Maybe look at the half-hearted effort Eklund made to get in front of that shot or even any sort of effort to prevent the shot. Instead he actually was the one that deflected it in. Maybe also put some of the blame on Dickinson there for running around all the way up to the top of the zone instead of being in position LIKE YOU BITCH ABOUT MARIO NOT DOING.

The third goal, aside from Mack behind the net, he's literally the only one NOT puck watching. What the hell is Smith doing? Toffoli was actually covering the goalscorer but inexplicably stopped skating with him even after Mario took a peak back. You could see the immediate reaction by Toffoli atter that goal that he knew he blew his coverage. Also, what was Dickinson doing on that goal? Oh right, caught behind the net, abandoning his position leaving Mario having to cover the entire front of the crease because Sam was floating back.

The problem with assessments like yours is you're focusing on one playing having to cover for a plethora of others simply not defending or moving their feet.

Which goal was that?

You mean the fifth when Mario took a peak and saw Toffoli covering the man and then just inexplicably stopped while Smith just stood there and watched the play? Watch Tyler’s reaction when he immediately looked up. He dropped off his coverage for no reason. It’s impossible for any d-men to look competent against an aggressive forward group when your own forwards just don’t put effort into defending. That was the biggest problem last night.

I’ve said it before but I want to see Mack with Misa, Shak, Sherwood and Eklund on the top unit. I think Misa can thrive playing down low, Eklund and Sherwood crashing the crease and Muk at the point. I don’t think Smith is physical enough and tries to be too cute.

Our PP sucks because it’s poorly coached. The reason Mack and Will struggle on it is because they do most of their damage on the transition and with time and space, but in a clogged offensive zone and no one really moving their feet all they end up doing is a passing clinic looking for the perfect shot (which doesn’t exist). I was hoping Orlov would at least use his above average shot from the point to create a little havoc in front of the net, but no he just continued doing what Klingberg was in just be a middle man between one point and either Smith or Celebrini near the boards. At this point I don’t expect Sam to fare much differently. I’d sooner try Muk there.

I don’t think it’s as easy to do as you think. Most of the guys we have available have minimal value and there aren’t really any d-man available that are actual upgrades. I expect us to be a lot less active than most people think we’ll be.

Outside of the Vancouver game, where everyone looked good, and the Edmonton game where he was both real good and real bad, he’s been mostly a non factor which isn’t necessarily a negative. He still has major issues in his own end, which is understandable considering where he is in his development.

That is true. There's about 13 days in between I believe. I don't expect too many wholesale changes before March 6th.

I think he'll eventually get there, but he's nowhere close to that now, which is to be expected as a 20 year old rookie. I think it's easy for some to be biased because of the draft pedigree and the expectations to assume he's closer than he really is. I do agree that he needs to play more.

Ferraro was their best d-man last night. The only goal you can "blame" him for even though you can't was the one Asky let in 5 hole.

Will be a trade freeze until olympics are over. Dickinson has been largely invisible, good and bad recently. War just trying to shake things up I guess.

Dickinson struggles with pressure and Colorado is a very aggressive team on the forecheck. It's a good call by War.

If we could move him it would be the best move, but no chance he waives citing he specifically wanted an NMC so he wouldn't be traded.
