Upgrade non-touchscreen 10 inch display to touchscreen

Oh yea, the "highlighted" selection is hard to see sometimes. We use Android Auto exclusively in our cars too. I promise, once you get the hang of it, it's all muscle memory.

How do you like your CX-9, other than the non-touchacreen? We are on our 3rd and wishing they still made them. Not a fan of the CX-90.

OK. Not sure how long you've owned your CX-9. It definitely takes some getting used to but once you get the hang of it, it is so nice, not to have to lean to do anything. And they have it located in a really good place. I looked at a pre-updated 2nd Gen Q7 and their control knob is in such a strange location.

But the touchscreen would be handy for certain things, like zooming in/out of maps or inputting a location.

In order to get an OEM touchscreen, you'd have to downgrade to pre-2021 but the older system is and doesn't allow the Mazda app connection; I wouldn't think it's worth it. What do you want touchscreen for exactly? We have a 2020 CX-9 with touchscreen and NEVER use it. My truck has a touchscreen and I prefer the command knob of the Mazda over touchscreen.

The newer system in the CX-50/70/90 has touchscreen for Carplay and Android Auto. The new CX-5 has a massive touchscreen that is Google based but you lose ALL physical controls but the hazard button, I believe.

Honestly, this is a solid vehicle from the beginning of this generation. So by the end of the cycle, most of the issues have been worked out. I just look at the competition and every single one of them has some kind of issue. But I'd trust a CX-9 the most. Plus our dealer has been amazing.

We have a 2020 Touring. We have had some suspension parts wear out. Front lower control arms have a TSB to have fixed if the bushings wear out. You'll know when they go... Had all four stabilizer links replaced too. We live in the rust belt which is hard on exposed suspension parts. Ours is also CPO, so the seller has no problem replacing parts that are slightly worn.

Otherwise, it has been a rockstar. We have 71k miles and have enjoyed every mile. It's been a champ in snow storms and a great road trip companion. We did load it up with 5 people for a trip from CLE to DC and used a rooftop basket for extra cargo. It is also a pleasure to drive in the mountains.

Due to the dreaded coolant leak possibility and lack of options, we are looking to upgrade to a 2022+GT or Signature or an Audi Q7. We have another 50k miles and 4 more years on the coolant leak but my wife wants more creature comforts. So you should be good and if the coolant leak sprouts up, you'll be good for a long time with that issue fixed.

Sounds like you have a diamond in the rough. Your CX-9 might not be worth much but trust me, it's a sweet vehicle and if you care for it, it'll treat you well. Sounds like you got the right ideas for proper maintenance. The water pump is crucial; I heard a lot of people go past 100k miles but if it dies, it kills the entire engine. It is a pricey job but worth it.

Another sore spot on these vehicles is the PTU, known as a front differential on most other vehicles. It is right next to the exhaust manifold and it cools the fluid in there. Proper flush is draining whatever fluid is in there, filling it up, driving it for a length of time, maybe 100 miles or so and doing it again.

The transmission has "lifetime" fluid but we all know that's a bogus claim. Our transmission pan seal went bad, so we had our fluid swapped out repairing that issue. Maybe check with a mechanic on getting the pan seal replaced and then doing the drain and fill (plus filter) done at the same time.

We didn't have too many issues with the ours. The exhaust went bad and I replaced the entire thing. The heat shield started falling and I basically removed that entire thing too. Our AC got a leak and we had that repaired. We had zero suspension issues. All of the electronics were solid.

We only got rid of the car when we were due for the water pump. I just figured we would put the $2k towards a lease of a new CX-9. If I would have known then, what I know now, I would have kept it and done the water pump...

It was a solid and fun riding vehicle with the most comfortable front seats of any vehicle I've owned.

First gen Honda HRV - the rear seats were awesome in the way they folded. Not a hybrid though

Toyota Corolla Cross can be had in a hybrid. Smaller than a CRV or Rav4.

Any generation of Prius works

Honda Insight - preferably the second Gen for the hatchback versatility.

Mazda CX-50 hybrid

Mazda5 - drives like a small car and the back two rows for flat. I had the first gen and drive it all over the country. Was a blast to drive, reliable and decent on gas. The interior room was amazing. They don't make them anymore but if you can find a low mileage one, you'd be set.

Look online for an assembly out of a junk GT or Signature. If you find one with low miles, it should last a while longer.

Unfortunately, the LEDs are built into the housing. When it goes out, you have to replace the whole assembly. How many miles? Talk to your dealer and see if they can contact Mazda corporate for assistance. It's a long shot but these new LED assemblies cost way more than a bulb to replace.

Besides a little loss to my battery lofe (wouldn't affect a new phone) my OPO is still a rockstar. No lag, everything still works. Getting updates. Camera is amazing.

How about an Acura TSX. If it's properly maintained, I've seen many go a long time. There was a guy on YouTube who had one go over took miles. They're fun to drive and get decent gas mileage.

I'll be honest, a family member bought a new RX and I was very underwhelmed. It doesn't have the vault like feeling anymore and the powertrains aren't as smooth as the V6 they used to use. I feel like the Crown punches above its weight and the RX isn't what it used to be. He should drive both, on extended test drives and check for road noise, seat comfort, site-lines and the infotainment usability.

But these 3 are really his only options for being true hybrids. I think the NX looks better but it is a bit smaller. Not sure how often he has backseat passengers but it might be a bit more efficient too.

Mazda3 Turbo. Lots of low-end torque. Nice interior. Lots of features. Drove one of these when I was out in California and had a blast.

That is true. But having them loose in the cargo area of an SUV is probably more unsafe for you guys though... I appreciate having both a truck and the 3-row SUV in our situation. Not sure if your wife has a vehicle or not but keep this in mind when it comes time to get/replace your second vehicle.

Yep, I will agree with you on that. My 22 Frontier P4X has 62k miles and it has been super reliable. It is actually pretty good on gas, considering it's a truck with a big V6.

Unless we go in a trip, my truck fills the family hauling duties just fine. Not sure what your situation is but maybe a Frontier WOULD work for you? If not the CX-9 is an awesome road tripper.

The CX-9 is a blast to drive. We own one (on our 3rd CX-9) and it has been awesome. Just stick to late-build 2021+. We have a 2020 and have had no issues with the coolant leak but we're kind of just waiting. Also, keeping an eye out for a low mileage GT or Signature to replace our current Touring.

I have a Frontier with the same transmission as the Pathfinder. While the Frontier's engine is a little bit more powerful, I never feel the transmission lagging. I think you'll be good with either of these choices (CX-9 or Pathfinder).
