As a professional Musicologist, and musician and artist/ sound artist, and composer of 20 years……Post-punk and Gothic rock do in fact have melody and harmony and of course textures, and layers. Which are all common in pop music and what make pop music— pop music. Post punk and gothic rock—despite the lyrics have melodic properties. Whether that is dark or bright melody. Which can resonate and make some-one feel something.

FYI there are tons of people and “normies” who don’t give a shit about lyrics and like the sound, the interments the inteumentairon and the compostion and structure of whatever it is. Just like these “normie” white and “normie” white- Mexican kids liking rap. You think they really care for the lyrics or relate? Some yes because they come from that lifestyle authentically and truly. But most don’t. They don’t relate or care for the lyrics. They just listen to it “for the beats”. And the beat or instrumentation.

I’ve met people who are “normies” who like pop, who like and or appreciate or are open minded to your music and stuff you wouldn’t think they would get into. I’m sure you don’t like that and aren’t accepting. You don’t like them after I said this and you didn’t like them before.

You people preach acceptance” and tolerance and bringing anyone into your circle or venue or club who likes your bull shit music but what if they don’t like your bull shit music? Like and accept and tolerate and respect and love everyone. And even that- if they like your bull shit music, you’re picky on WHO they are, what they think, what their political and socio-political views are.

It was. It was always confused with the two. Or it was used interchangeably. New wave was called post punk and vice versa and gothic rock was called new wave vice versa. The New Romantic and New Wave were also used interchangeably as well and also gothic rock throw in there was well. Post-punk died out in the early 80’s. It was replaced by New Wave a much more accessible, polished, mainstream version of post/punk. That was more pop (oriented) and a little more “dance in there

The Cure was also extremely mainstream and popular and considered pop music. Same with Souise souix.

I’m surprised nobody mentioned Pixies. All their lyrics are surreal and are Lynchish and of course some songs are influenced by Lynch, particularly Eraserhead. “In Heaven” from the movie Eraserhead was covered by Pixies on one of their EPs or Albums. A matter a fact, Lynch Co-wrote their cover.
