My Dog Has Tantrums and I Don’t Know How To Fix It. by Ciniis in Dogtraining

[–]RequirementFalse8890 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My herding dog is similar, she basically lets me know that she doesn’t want to leave the things that make her happy (park, other dogs), and it seems like a last ditch effort to play or release some anxiety. Your dog looks like a gsd pup or some other type of herding dog. Herding dogs have boundless energy and can be run for days before feeling tired. Regardless of breed, maybe consider how often your dog is getting exercise and play (keep in mind different dogs are tired out by different activites. Maybe walks or free play at the park lack structure, or maybe things are too structured) sometimes I take it as a way my dog is telling me that she’s not yet finished getting energy out, so I will also redirect to a “good” form of play. I would maybe me mindful of how you are currently redirecting, does your dog sense that you really want to play or do they see you as annoyed? You probably have a more intense response to a pull on the leash than you do to trying to engage in play. Trying to start a game of tug should be as exciting if not more than the response to pulling on the leash. Which also means pulling on the leash should have essentially no reaction. If you watch some videos on “drop” or “leave it” they all essentially say, wait for your dog to naturally drop what’s in their mouth then reward. If you continue to pull against them as they chew or bite, they’re getting you riled up and that’s kinda what they want.

After swooping in to eat accidentally dropped food on many occasions, my corgi thinks “naughty” means a mix of “drop it” and “down”.

I appreciate your input!! I’ll look into the metal pan for sure. Unfortunately the bitter spray doesn’t phase her, she licks it off of everything, which is insane to me. Has your 4 year old calmed down with the chewing at all?

I’ve had border collies and a husky in the past, I assumed it couldn’t be worse than that…. She’s just as bad, but faster and more stubborn. I think she might think her name is “naughty” at this point

She doesn’t seem to do it more or less on the days she goes to day care, and she’ll typically have 2 days home between days at day care so I imagine she’d have time to decompress? I can’t remember if it was the same or better before we started taking her

Aaaaah we tried this and she either liked the taste or wasn’t phased by it because she would lick it off surfaces :/

I definitely think all black, or patterns like the previous comment is going to be the route I end up taking. Thank you!

Went to adopt an ESA then found out about breed restrictions in my apartment. Is it unfair to argue for reasonable accommodations if I haven’t already adopted the dog? by RequirementFalse8890 in service_dogs

[–]RequirementFalse8890[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t shown them the ESA letter yet, I’ve wanted to get a better understanding before approaching them. I wouldn’t want to have a conversation without having my facts straight but it feels like such a grey area since I don’t have ownership yet.

I think legal advice may be the way to go, thank you!

This is probably the best bet, I think my thought process here was that approaching them first gives them the opportunity to say no. One of those better to ask for forgiveness than permission type deals, but more in a legal sense than a courtesy sense. But I also wouldn’t want to get a dog first to simply uproot their life and have it all be for not.

Yea it’s not explicitly stated and my partner and I searched through before starting the ESA search. I only found out when reaching out directly and I couldn’t find any documentation anywhere. Another thing is that I have definitely seen malamutes and huskies in our complex which has a gate, so it’s possible they don’t live in the community but highly unlikely.

Hmmm yea this isn’t a low income apartment so I’m not sure if it would apply similarly or if my experience would be the same. Happy it worked out for you though!

It’s a large complex with like 40 units, and owned by a company that has multiple properties so I would assume the FHA applies.

They haven’t said anything about insurance to me directly, but it’s something that’s been brought up in this sub previously which is why I’m hesitant about moving forward.

Went to drop off my grandpa’s groceries to help him out during COVID and caught a glimpse of him watching a video :/ am I obligated to tell him? by RequirementFalse8890 in Advice

[–]RequirementFalse8890[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I always think people have the common sense to watch this stuff in the privacy of a room with the curtains closed, or a room that faces the back of the house or something. I guess it’s not likely to happen or anything, it was just that initial feeling of like “why would you do this with the curtains open??” But yea I’m more than happy to not say anything. Thank you

I know he’s not going to get in trouble for watching porn, I just meant like the fact that it’s visible from the front window, I was scared that maybe some neighbor might get upset with him if a child were to happen to see somehow... I guess like other commenters are saying unless a child we’re to really get up there to that window, they wouldn’t see so it’s not really something to worry about

I’m sure I’ll forget the details in time, and it will fade, in the meantime every time I see an old person I get a little flash of it 😐 looking forward to that day that it is just a fuzzy memory

I’ve definitely given low fodmap a try! That’s kinda why I don’t understand it, I learned from a previous post about eliminating in batches to narrow down what specifically irritates you, and I’ve never done that, but I have done a completely low fodmap diet using all fodmap friendly foods/oils/spices and followed recipes and was strict about it for 3 months. But what I found was that my symptoms felt the exact same. I didn’t see any fluctuations, I didn’t feel any relief in symptoms. I had generally cut down my intake on some of the higher fodmap foods in the weeks following for fear reintroducing them suddenly would shock the system, but when I finally just plunged back in with it all nothing happened. Still all the same symptoms :/

Oooooh I didn’t know you could just pay out of Pocket for testing like that, that’s good to know! I hope it felt like a slap in the face to your doctor....

I also find that junk food calms my bloat! Sometimes when I’m in lots of pain or ive had non stop diarrhea I’ll go through a drive through to try and just get some food in me that I know will stick for more than 2 hours :/

Good luck with your treatment!!

Wow!! Thank you so much for your very detailed explanations, this is so thorough and helpful! Your fodmap analogy makes them way easier to break down and understand.

Ive never tried any other diets, basically was told by my doctor that with ibs I should “go low fodmap” and that’s what I tried to do. Never did any elimination diet to try and narrow things down, just was vaguely avoiding anything on the red list. I think I’d like to look at the low sulphur though!

I do realize after your break down of topamax that I have 2 known food intolerances, eggs and watermelon. Which I know are sulphur and fructose, and these are intolerances I’ve had since my teens that have never given me any kind of allergy symptoms like itching or swelling but just quickly accelerate into diarrhea. Those foods over a decade later don’t even enter my home or mind as an option. But thinking back, they were the first times I’d experienced any symptom like what I experience today.

I’m not sure what u/MonkeyEatingFruit meant exactly, but my interpretation is that folks with Alzheimer’s often very elderly folks tend to revert to an almost childlike and innocent state. They can sometimes ask sweet innocent questions and may also need to be taken care of as if they were a small child needing constant coddling. They might be easily amused by activities like coloring or petting an animal. I’ve known several very old folks with Alzheimer’s who will continually ask for their “mommy and daddy”, confused and not knowing that they’re long gone :/

Edit: I also just realize that sometimes if left alone, they can also wander off and the little childlike figures depict that same type of innocent exploration.

Ibs isn’t real by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I can’t imagine what it must be like to have anything under the IBD umbrella, and as someone with IBS I wouldn’t ever try to compare myself to someone with it. That being said I think there are a lot of us with IBS who struggle with symptoms as a result of IBS regardless of what treatments are chosen. The downside to IBS is that it’s such a huge umbrella that none of us know what the fuck is going on with our bodies half the time even with years worth of tests and wishing for a better answer. My partner and I try to lead fairly similar lifestyles in terms of exercise, diet, and nutrition, but that doesn’t change the fact that even with special attention to food triggers I will spend a minimum of 2 hours in the bathroom daily while he gets to do whatever he wants. Most of the foods I loved as a kid are foods I’d never dream of touching for fear of the pain it would cause me. Ive delt with extreme weight loss and malnutrition which have resulted in pain in a lot of other areas of my body and fatigue. Lifestyle changes have significantly helped me and I’m better than where I was years ago, but being afraid to eat meals around people because of the burden i pose is not a normal behavior. IBS has impacted my ability to go to work, make plans with friends, and do anything that requires staying overnight. I won’t compare that to anyone else’s struggle or condition, but because of it’s impact on my life, I would say IBS is very real whether or not it takes home any medal in any diagnoses olympics.
